I've been coaching 12 years. I know that just about everyone teaches R-L-R footwork for setters. Why is this? I have always taught L-R-L, and I know I am the odd man out on this. My reasoning (for setters that are not jumping) is when the setter finishes on her right, she has a strong tendency to be facing Z5, then setting over her right shoulder to the OH. This often results in an unbalanced release (right hand is closer to the OH target). She also has her back turned to the net (more so than if she finishes on her left.). Lastly, if she is going to back-set, I teach that she generally rotates to her right (toward the net) as she finishes, so she can cover the OPP attack, and not "blind set." Thanks in advance. LOVE GMS and the entire crew.
