I remember seeing another breakdown of Dracula's death scene, and how important of a thing it is that Dracula calls Adrian "Our boy" instead of characterizing him as Lisa's son, because it shows that it isn't just a case of "You remind me of her", he genuinely loves Adrian as the greatest gift Lisa had given him and the realization that he had forgotten such a fundamental thing in his rage and sorrow is what gave him the clarity he needed to stop

I cried the moment when Dracula's eyes went from bloodshot red to white. Suddenly, all that clarity hitting him reminded him of the sin he was about to commit: killing their boy. That moment solidified the fact that, even if he's a monster for all the atrocities he has done, he still has a heart capable of love. He's in that regard more human than some of the characters in the series.

I love the progression of Dracula. He started the purge with such fury and fire, but quickly lost energy and fell into his depression. I don't think there was any reasoning with Dracula at the beginning, he was only thinking with his heart, not his head.

@rashkavar Жыл бұрын
@@MrUmbra-ts6se My read is that it's just time that burns out the fury and just leaves desolation in its wake. When we see his declaration of revenge, his "you have one year" speech, it's as fiery in temperament as it is a literal projection of flames. In the flashbacks we see during that year, of him gathering his forces, that fire is already a smouldering coal rather than a blazing passion, and by the end of that year, he's just...done. A hollowed out shell of pain and loss without really anything driving him forward but momentum. Which is what rage and grief, badly handled, can do to a person. There's better ways, of course, but for someone in his position, having lived as an immortal, life unchanging for who knows how many centuries, if he's ever had to deal with this kind of pain before, it's so long that he's forgotten any coping mechanisms he might have once had. And he doesn't really have anyone to help him find them again. (Alucard might have been that person, if he had better people skills. A therapist could be too, but at the point this story is set, competent therapists (at least as a scientifically informed profession) are several centuries in the future...in those days the closest you got to a therapist was a religious leader, and, uh...given his immediate response to his wife's death was to declare war on the Catholic Church (also all of humanity, but especially the Church) that's....probably not a viable option here.)

You could tell they didn't want to do it, yet they both felt it was the only way. The animation made the fight seem really cool at times but it hits you in the feels when you realize this is father and son fighting to the death and then it becomes incredibly heavy. Then he breaks down and becomes incredibly vulnerable, stoism is gone, but loneliness and immaturity remain, which again leads to a tragedy. Adrian and Trevor's relationship is fascinating. Adrian knows a fair bit about the Belmonts and what they are about. The scene in the Belmont Hold demonstrates one of the few times that Adrian gets some emotion when he talks about how the Belmont family kills vampires. The fact that he could move beyond that to work with Trevor, let alone befriend him, shows that he can change and the world may not be as black and white as he likes to believe.
@TheBayzent Жыл бұрын
I mean, Trevor isn't Leon, so Adrian kinda being like a vegan Vampire should keep the Belmonts off from his back in theory. With Leon it would be different because the guy kinda made a Feanor style oath, that compromised all of his kids, but Trevor wasn't that imto it st the start of the series.
@jfrancis232 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBayzent I think Adrian was less talking about Trevor himself wanting to kill him, as much as what Trevor's family had been doing for centuries. Being half vampire, he saw vampires as people. so to him, the belmonts were murderers who killed and destroyed without distinction. I do agree that Leon was very different. Leon was a zelot. I remember the first time I saw that scene, and there's the long shot on the shelf of skulls, and I just went, "ohhhh.... That's... That's a really small skull". House Belmont made no distinction between monster and child.
@R_FangZ Жыл бұрын
I'm kinda torn about that fight scene with the four of them. One theory could be that Dracula was just toying with Trevor, Sypha and Alucard because he wanted to feel powerful and take his time taking out his rage on them. Another could be, like you said, that he instinctively held back because he didn't want to kill Alucard and the only people he seems to be close to. But there's another possibility, that maybe Dracula subconsciously saw in their coming to the castle his chance to die, and with his motivation to go on already being so low, he just didn't feel like giving it his all anymore. One of them hits him, he hits back. Alucard smashes Dracula through a wall, Dracula sends Alucard flying through a different wall. At this point he doesn't care about his castle anymore since it's such a lonely, bitter place. Until they fly into Alucard's old room, and that's like the last drop for Dracula. It catches him by surprise and it triggers all his repressed emotions all at once.
@kalebsmith4159 Жыл бұрын
My head cannon is that Alucard did use that year to try to convince his father to avoid genocide, but dracula genuinely falls into such a deep depression that he just ignores and alienates himself from his son. As a being who has lived for centuries without love suddenly losing the most important thing in the world to him simply breaks him. I think Alucard realized this and that's why his scene of confronting him was his last ditch effort to show his father how serious he was and hoping to snap him out of it. But Alucard is grieving too and he's frustrated because he knows that's not how his mom would want his father to react and so he acts in frustration.

@Georgia Dow I remember a blink-and-you-miss-it scene in Alucard's childhood-room, where it shows a small white-wolf stuffed-animal. It twitches slightly in response to seemingly nothing, since Alucard and Vlad are at that moment just standing in the room. I choose to speculate that Alucard's choice of Shapeshifting into a White Wolf is a call-back to his family and childhood and mother. To a happier time. While the rules for Castlevania's (the show's at least) magic-system are not spelled out too much, sympathetic magic (in both theological anthropology and popular culture) often tie magic and emotion tightly together. Think the Patronus symbols of Harry Potter, or the (second) Shroud of Turin in the Dresden Files, or so many others. I don't think the animators would have animated the little stuffed toy to twitch, without it meaning something. My money's on the Pathos tying to his v. game classic wolf form, as both a fan-service reference AND an allusion to his own emotional stake in their father-son fight.

The whole series shows how much Dracula really loved Lisa and just how that love was... warped by the choices of the clergy and townsfolk. He went from being a complete recluse to almost a beacon of hope with Lisa's influence, not just for each other but potentially the whole world; he wanted to be better and the two of them made the world a better place by their presence. But people can be cruel and callous and ignorant of themselves and each other and the beacon went dark. So very dark that it extinguished all light around it, even, if temporarily, Dracula's love for his own son. Castlevania was a shockingly adept perspective on humanity.

Thank you for this Georgia, when you started with Castlevania I was awaiting this part impatiently. Now to wait until you can analyze the relationship between Lenore and Hector, it will be nice to see someone defending her without calling her "mommy" every few paragraphs. On the being fixated about things, and almost unable to change your opinions, I think it kinda works that way for vampires, from Alucard's POW, he tried all he could, and there was no solution other than killing his father, because he knew his dad was dead set on doing horrible things, because in the past, Dracula already retorted to do horrible things to achieve his ends. On the being way too stubborn to seek out peace with one another once the warpath was open, Lenore's last conversation with Hector also throws some light on this, how vampires are, by nature, static, and feel lost when things start changing, so after Adrian failed to make Dracula quit, this was the only resolution.

Being the only out of I think 4 or 5 people in the room who fully got it, I'm so glad that they let me go back, scene by scene and explain the relevance. I got to do that with a lot of the easter eggs. Luckily, they not only were unbothered by me nerding out, they asked when they didn't know. "Was this/that in the games? etc etc." I consider it my newest core memory, lmao. I knew from the beginning that the actual fight with Dracula (while hype) was going to be a very sad thing at its core. Between Dracula's, "My boy, I'm killing my boy, your greatest gift to me. And I'm killing him." and everything that comes after it concerning Alucard and the ramifications of his Patricide is just simply heartbreaking. First time in a long time that a piece of media has made me cry. Alucard on his own in the castle, crying in his father's chair, knowing that now that both of his parents are gone he is (minus his friends, though not the same thing) truly alone in the world and feeling the weight of his father's life in his hands... oof. I wonder how much different Alucard is from the average person psychologically. He likely might not have had a lot of friends growing up given he is half vampire, but I wonder how that affected him. Lisa and Dracula seemed to be very attentive parents, playing with him, making toys for him, etc. But typically children also leaen a lot about social interactions though their peer group, so it might explain why he loves teasing Trevor so much. He really needed that kind of social interaction, that verbal rough and tumble play teenagers (especially teenage boys) tend to engage with. I can't imagine pain he must have felt having to fight and kill his own father. It must have felt like having to pull the plug while also getting into a huge fight with a parent, and the show does seem to discuss this issue later on when Alucard sits in his father's chair and finally breaks down. I imagine a lot of that month afterwards was him processing his grief.

I have really enjoyed your insights and analysis on this series. Castlevania was an instant favorite game of mine as a child; the large spooky castle to explore, the horde of undead to vanquish, and amazing accompanying music. Netflix's adaption was really well done in bringing mostly flat, broad characters to life. I look forward to any more Castlevania related topics you might cover. Maybe potentially the mess that is going on in Hector's head during the series, or how the heroic trio communicates with each other. Once again, thanks for the great videos and always nice to meet a fellow Castlevania fan!

Honestly kudos for managing to do this whole talk with the fangs in, even with editing. LARPers know the struggle.

But 5:23-5:28 I think he already did. Alucard and Isaac both exist as a synthesis, and both are something new. Throw in an alliance with a Belmont and the union of a Speaker's knowledge and the Belmont library... Drac did some terrible shit, but Lisa's influence changed everything.

Im watching these out of order amd im loving the progress that she's made in talking with the fangs lol i was really surprised at how well she was talking with them in, it's kind of fun to see that it was actually a lot of practice

D'aww, you didn't go over the most heartbreaking part; when Alucard breaks down and cries after killing Dracula.

This is the most compelling relationship in Castlevania for me. Even if our screen time with Dracula and Adrian is limited. Wonderful analysis. I really enjoyed your perspective. Would you considering do a similar series for AMC’s interview with the Vampire?

I started bawling. I think people can probably guess when. That scene is always emotional, but seeing you analyze it while also showing empathy towards their tragedy sped up the waterworks. Thanks for your Castlevania reviews and deep dives! The Lenore one showed up on my feed first then saw the Isaac one. Now I'm here. Bawling.

Love the costume! Also some other knowledge: Adrian actually was wounded so badly he needed more time than he had to recover (at least if I'm remembering the games). Also... he's so much younger as a parent Dracula holds more of the responsibility there. Sypha says it earlier Alucard is actually just barely an adult.

I'm interested on your thoughts about Alucard in the seasons after this as he tries to navigate the world without either parent and dealing with the trauma from this and other spoilers

I would also point out that alucard loved and idolized his father. He mentions several times how brilliant, talented, and amazing is father is. And when he suddenly has expectation and worldview broken, it can lead to direct opposition to that former view. He is angry and disappointed that he and his father are in disagreement.

First off, great video! Next, I would add that one theme that is explored through this and later seasons is that typical vampires eventually end their immortal lives into madness, following their every whim or thirsting for ever more power. Finding relationships with others of their kind may allow to hold on to their sanity, but it is hard to trust another predator that could just as easily kill you. Dracula seemed to be the exception; he could interact with vampire society, lead a cabal of the mood struck him or even indulge in the occasional slaughter. In the end, however, he needed none of those and could live a relatively fulfilled life simply by performing scientific experiments, discovering the mysteries of the world and increasing his own power just for the sake of it. His wife changed all that and her death, at the hands of humans, hurt him more than he could have ever conceived. I don’t think he could even understand what he was becoming until he stepped in his son’s room.

Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards. Plot spoiler of almost every movie, comic, anime, and video game with a character named Alucard.

One of the things that I think gets lost in the jumble of the story as it only gets briefly mentioned is that despite his physical appearance and super human intelligence, Alucard is emotionally only a teenager and a very sheltered one at that. In many ways he doesn't know HOW to be better.

Aside from paying attention to everything that was discussed in this video, I have to admit I was more than a little distracted by Alucard's sword...sure, I already have two longswords, but his is just so damn pretty. Sure, neither of mine float through the air like that (one just FEELS like it can), but damn that's just a work of art right there.

Thank you for pointing out how truly similar the two characters are when you get down to it. Even if you fundamentally disagree with a parent figure there's still a certain amount of them in you. Parents often hope that their kids will inherent their best traits, but they also tend to inherent the lesser traits too. PS that costume looks great on you!

A few notes that could have refuted Dracula assertions Dracula: ANYONE OF THEM COULD HAVE STOOD UP AND SAID NO! Though alucard wasn't there, the old woman dracula meet when he found lisa's cabin burned down did say it wasn't right Dracula is stating that the people could have saved lisa, but chose not to What alucard could have retorted with Alucard: Can they stop you father? Could they stop me at my weakest? We both know the answer. I will not lie and say some did not agree with mothers death, but the ones who killed her are feared by others as much as they fear you. Remember what mother said 'We can teach them not to be scared anymore' Me speaking now Something I've learned is that unless the point of no return is quite visible, the time to talk is not over. Regrettable I've also seen how far stubbornness and self righteousness can go as well.

I understand Dracula's pain. It's bad enough losing someone you love. It's 100,000 times worse when that person dies at the hands of another, you weren't there to intervene & you find out from a total stranger that your beloved has been killed. You feel hollow, numb, sadness & fiery rage. You want Justice. You want those responsible to pay for their heinous crimes. You want nuclear revenge. I understand that all to well.

Hi Ms. Georgia, I just came across your channel a few days ago and have been loving it. Watched the Puss in Boots videos and just 1-2 videos especially on Arcane's Jinx and Silano, which made me gravitate towards in understanding. I know I am just a stranger passing by. If you could make a video on people who self isolate and who push others away, that would be really lovely. I find myself doing that, and I don't understand why I do that. I don't have anyone in mind in fiction as an example. Thank you again for your channel. It has helped me understand myself and people more.

I'd love to hear your takes on some of the banter and/or fight scenes among the hero trio. The bants almost border on the oversaturated quips a la MCU for my liking, but what saves it for me is that it's almost entirely excellent characterization and/or exploration of their various dynamics. That, and plus when things get serious, so do they, unlike some superheroes I could name. It's certainly ripe for commentary, and I'm curious what your insights might be.

When it comes to fighting Trevor and Sypha, I think ge was fighting to defend himself in a way that would demoralise them in the hopes that them giving up would force tge same result on Alucard, thereby ending the fight without killing hus son. When it's the two of them alone, snashing through walls, he's back to mot thinking clearly. I think he was going for a psychological edge in showing how easily he could have struck a killing blow by easily knocking them away. He does unleash what is essentially a magma ball because, as he aaid, he'd had enough. His anger took over again, so his emotions are all over the place, which makes sense for what he's going through. He was just done with everything and wanted to win big or go out the same way until he was brought back to his senses.
