It was so touching when she finally understood Mel's strength in this world, and it sold me on her character and she is one of my favorite antagonists in awhile. One super small thing. What Rictus uses to dispel the magic of the black rose isn't Hex Tech but a form of Noxian Rune magic that has some adjacent concepts (This isn't detailed in the show so there's no way you would know.). I was surprised to hear people thought she was a Psychopath or some variant of such. I only ever thought of her as a warrior from a warrior culture.

@@seanrilian Those specific runes are. LoL has an item in game that looks like them that is a Magic Resistance item, making it hard for people who do Ability Damage to hurt you. It is called the Kaenic Rookern. The runes themselves are probably Black Rose runes or the progenitor to runes used by the Black Rose. (There is a... A lot of lore around this... And involves basically a Warlord so Brutal he became a... God of the Realm of the Dead... Sort of.)

Rictus probably has a set up meant mostly for defence and protection since he is Ambessa's guard but whether it has other functions I couldn't say.

It's interesting that Black Rose claims Ambessa hid Mel away to use her later as a weapon. But after learning of Mel's powers, there is no point where she tries to use, exploit, or manipulate her daughter. She doesn't say "Join me on the frontlines of this war," she just wants Mel out of her way, as always.

Ambessa knows that being able to forgive people , even ones that did you wrong is a hard thing to do . I think one really interesting thing about Ambessa’s interactions with Caitlyn throughout the season is really interesting. We see in season one that she will kill in front of Mel, so I don’t think that’s why she didn’t kill Caitlyn, but instead between her second in command telling Caitlyn the betrayal will hurt Ambessa, and Ambessa making someone else kill Caitlyn, it seems she does to some extent view Caitlyn as family, even though that clearly wasn’t the goal, similar to how Silco eventually came to view Jinx. I sort of wonder if maybe part of that is Caitlyn demonstrates more similarities to Ambessa in what she is willing to do than either Mel or her son did.

He actually says “as it is difficult to combine love and fear, it is far *safer* to be feared than loved”. Love can turn to disappointment, hatred, and disdain. Fear puts you on a pedestal. It’s easier to maintain with demonstrations of power. People will grow accustomed to what’s good, so love can be lost if it’s not intensely managed, but fear lingers.

Ambessa was a great character I felt comfortable to not always agree with on her actions in my head as I watched the first season a couple of years ago and the second season just recently but I can largely also find reasons to find her relatable and badass (seeing Rictus on screen was also a chillingly cool experience till he got Warwicked).

A detail that I missed, until you used it again in this episode, is that the necklace the girl was wearing, that Ambessa decapitated when Mel was young, is the same Black Rose necklace LeBlanc gave Mel in season 2. So, while ruthless, it does make the moral judgement on that scene a bit more ambiguous since that woman might have been a member of Noxus' personal Illuminati group or possibly a LeBlanc clone, since she used that girl's imagine to talk to Mel later. Though, it should be noted that the bracer Ambessa was using to nullify magic, and the weapon Rictus used against the merchant, wasn't actually hextech. It's Noxian rune magic.

Seeing how Ambessa considered Mel sth that weakened her, it's hard not to think back to one of your previous videos where you said that the reason why Caitlyn pushed Vi away was because she thought Vi made her weak. It's like in this matter Ambessa and Caitlyn are similar (not to mention that Ambessa casted away Mel so we have a specific action following the perception). On the other hand i think Caitlyn and Mel also have a thing in common which is empathy (even though yes, Caitlyn suppressed her own quite a bit after getting into her soldier mode). Also this one quote echoes in my head: "is there something more undoing than a daughter?"

I see her as someone with dual conflicting natures: mother and warlord. On one hand she grew up steeped in a culture that values might and conquest above all and is very much aligned in those values. On the other hand she does care about her children. In the game League from which Arcane is based she has a line where she outright says that she only truly knew love when she held her firstborn. She's stern with Mel but never outright malicious. To me what sold me was the argument they had when Ambessa slaps Mel for disparaging her brother's memory...she outright says "He was the sweetness in my heart". I think in the end she was a ruthless and desperate woman, raised as a warlord and grieving the loss of a child she loved

Im not sure if those rune things Rictus uses are Hextech. I think they may just be regular ole protective runes that negate magic. The magicesque shit is usually color coded in this show (hextech is blue, shimmer is purple, chemtech is like a radioactive green color) and those runes when activated are a softer emerald like green so I think its different then hextech.

Truly an great video on one of my favourite characters of the show. Ambessa is one of the most clear cut examples of the character writing that Arcane does so well... complex, compelling and bold.... and yet motivations and reasoning which is so easy to parse and understand. All of which feels even more dense and interesting when viewed through the lens of this character. Always constantly teetering on the edge of being sympathetic (mostly regarding her feelings and protective nature towards her family) vs. her ruthless nature in how she deals with those she views merely as assets (3:45, 12:26 and 19:20), exemplifying the pull of her Yin and Yang. In this respect, she also reminds me of one of my other favourite characters of the year, the Penguin from the HBO series. Fantastic villainous traits that have often made those who hold them my most memorable characters. I could go on about this character all day but you've covered all the bases really well. I'm just hopeful the next show in this universe can also find its Ambessa. Speaking of villains, my vote for what to cover next is Viktor and his journey throughout the season. He certainly has some...interesting character moments and developments.

Ambassa was a soldier more over a Noxxan. Her love was to prepare her children for the cruelty of the world, she hardened them and taught them to be crueler and even more cunning. So that they grow from sheep into wolves. To blend in and control until the time comes to claim there prey. She taught them to well though, and they to began to see through her lies and doubted her. In the end she lived a life of equal parts glory and regret. But in her failure she succeeded in making her wolf

On the frontlines, a slave is equal status as a high ranking noble. All that matter is their will; their strength to fight for what is "noxus". They developed Runic Weapons that invoke the Arcane much like how Jayce and Viktor's original Hextech used to work. Basic Ruinic Inscriptions that had a specific purpose. In most cases, absorbing magic from their enemies and using it against them.

The brace used by Rictus, and later Ambessa, to block both magic and hextech attacks does not appear to be hextech in nature. Instead, it seems to be imbued with runic magic, which is traditionally known for its protective properties. This is interesting to me because we never see Ambessa or noxians using hextech, but we do see her dismantling Caitlyn's weapon and deploying shimmer-induced soldiers on the battlefield, which will have a historical impact on Noxus' tactics in the near future.

Is ASPD really equal to psychopathy, though? ASPD focuses on actions while psychopathy focuses on attributes. I know that psychopathy isn't in the DSM so the term isn't used in most professional mental health settings, but IMO it's a distinct subset of ASPD. I think another aspect that's important is that psychopathy is on a spectrum, so it's not an "either or" situation.

She didn't want to complain about all she had to give to protect but became "narcissistic" because yes, we all deserve love, adoration, attention just on a BASIC level! and i do not think she got it from her parents who were always saying to learn this skill, and that trait...and possibly only showed disappointment if it was not reached or a sigh of relief and "onto the next thing!" when the task was accomplished. Another argument against the 'psychopath' label is an observation someone mentioned on Twitter about the fact that she turns her back when Caitlyn's about to be executed. She chose not to do it herself and she might have been trying avoid becoming emotional in front of her troops. She was absolutely using Caitlyn for her own gain, but I think she did develop some feelings towards her.

No one is talking about how this whole season Ambessa taught her daughters (Mel+Cait+Vi) about war and what it takes to win one, but she forgot to follow those words. Lets start with "Vision": is she really had a clear vision what she wanna do and what she gonna get from Viktor and Singed? Ans is no. Then comes "Might": maybe but not really, she underestimated the people of Zaun and power of youth, she even underestimated the intellect of Cait and Mel. Now "Guile": She definitely discarded Zaun from the War and refused to think the consequences of Viktor 'glorious evolution', if Viktor won this battle he would've taken her soldiers too. Last comes "Sacrifice": She did sacrifice her soldiers but not her greed of power, not the ego. That should be all but no, the last wise words that came out of her mouth for Cait was the pin of her coffin, "Desperation is the doorway to oblivion, child". She was too busy to see that she lost control of all the principles she should follow.

One little thing, the runes on Rictus' weapon and the ones that Ambessa uses are not Hextech. It's just plain old magic. Anti-magic, to be precise. It consumes and // or cancels out any magic it comes into contact with. That would include Hextech. But it is more of an armor than a weapon. Also, as to why Ambessa didn't just order her soldiers to rush Cait and Mel, it's a common trope among warrior cultures in fiction to have the Duel of Honor. Battles and duels are different things. A duel is a confrontation of two wills, not two armies. It is about the mettle, the worth of those who fight. So when they set up this arena around Mel, Cait, and Ambessa, this means a confrontation of some sort was about to take place, and the soldiers were going to respect it. Because it is a trial of strength. Mel has challenged her mother, so whoever wins will earn the respect of the troops. The loser will not, or in Ambessa's case, she will lose that respect, the authority. Because Mel and Caitlyn would have demonstrated that they are stronger. Worthier.

Nah Ambessa is just a well trained Soldier. Singed is more Psychopathic tho. I think for a Sociopath, he is way to calm. But he does a lot of Immoral stuff, to gain his goal, always planning foreward. Lacks Empathy, if it comes to his experiments. But he is always very interrested and rational. Very proud of his, creations. And all he does, is always somehow for his own benefit.

One note, typically picky me. Rictus doesn't use Hextech. Those are anti magic runes he already had on his staff that allows him to absorb and deflect anything Arcane in nature. I would like to point out my issue with Ambessa constantly calling Mel a fox. If she truly understood what a fox represents in a person, she would know they're the ones you really have to watch out for. They don't rush in. They symbolize a cunning intellect that allows them to see key strategic points in order to properly strike. Wolves, while tender parents to their pups, are also a symbol of pure aggression. Pure aggression can make one reckless which is what I feel was Ambessa's true downfall. Her desire for war and aggression made her blind to the cunning nature of her own daughter and she only realized too late that she'd been had. We see it often in nature, too, that a fox is more than capable of stealing from a wolf. Mel, though she hoped to avoid it, stole Ambessa's life when she summoned the Black Rose. To make a long story short, I've always felt it's the foxes you have to be really careful around.

Singed is much more of a psychopath than Ambessa could ever be. Ambessa adopted psychopathic tendencies due to her culture and so she could protect herself and her family. Singed, on the other hand, seems to use his daughter as an excuse to commit atrocities.
