Didn't care about Fuji's launch video. I was waiting for yours to drop and went straight down to Dynamic Range section. I was hoping this would match 12.x stops of recent Sony/Canon cameras. Because that was going to be what my purchase decision is hinged on. But you totally blew my mind by actually experimenting and finding out how it can squeeze out 14+ stops with NR off and doing it in post. Appreciate Fuji giving the option to turn off noise reduction. My a7siii doesn't do that. It has good DR but I can't squeeze out any more than what it does out of the box. I'm in on the pre-order for XH-2S. Thanks for all the work you put in, Gerald.

In your tests, a7siii showed 17+ stops in Slope based DR in HLG3. So, curious how much potential is going unused in Sony due to their reluctance to not let us turn off the internal NR.

Hey Gerald, recently i've been doing some in depth testing and found that at both 1250 and 3200 in f-log 2 there is a lot of chroma noise reduction happening at -4, causing colors to bleed and losing color info in the shadows, and the sharpening even at -4 is very very strong causing a very digital looking image, I've sent email requests to fujifilm to give us options to lower the noise reduction and sharpening another few notches, but they haven't even open the emails, so please if possible help us x-h2s users out by forwarding these requests, or at least making these problems more known, thank you very much!

You've mentioned the improvements, I have one grip about a step backward: the focus selector button. the X-H1 has a lever that allows the single, continuous, or manual selection to be made with a twist of a lever with the left thrid or fourth finger almost subconsciously, while the eye never leaves the composition. From what I've seen of reviewers of the X-H2S, focus selection requires 1) pressing a button at the front, 2) looking at a screen for the choices, 3) scrolling to the desired option. All of this are a major distraction from composition. I often switch between settings during a shoot and the loss of the nearly-subconscious experience into a deliberate computer operational experience grieves me.
@kites41212 жыл бұрын
The XH2S is set up for a different workflow than you are used to. Have you programmed all of your custom settings on the PASM dial? The reason that they changed the M/AF-S/AF-C selector from a lever to a button is so that you can set the 7 different custom settings (and other modes if you use them) to a particular focus mode, which decreases a lot of steps in your workflow once you get used to working like that. It takes a while to get the PASM dial set up how you want it, but once you do, you hardly have to change any settings or press any buttons while using the camera. If your style of working requires you to constantly change between manual focus and auto, and you can't solve that problem by having two different modes on your PASM dial set to auto focus and manual, there is an easy way to use autofocus and manual focus together: 1) set your camera to manual focus... 2) the AF-ON button to the right of the joystick for autofocus (the AF-ON button can be set to AF-S or AF-C). As an alternative (that I don't suggest)... you can set your camera to autofocus, enable the AF-MF feature (when you turn the focus ring it turns the camera to manual focus), but then you need to set an Fn button to AF-LOCK so that the camera doesn't go back to autofocus when you press the shutter button to take your picture. Hope that helps.

The exposure changing during zooming is when using a "fixed" aperture lens that actually does *not* have a mechanically fixed aperture. It's just programmed to always open/close the aperture to keep it at a fixed level. This could to some extend be fixed in the lens firmware - the camera firmware won't have an impact on that.
@professionalpotato47642 жыл бұрын
All fixed aperture zoom lenses have to adjust the iris when zooming. Iris diameter = focal length / f-stop. At f/2.8, 16mm is 5.71mm and at 55mm, 19.64mm. Thing is most DSLR lenses and other mirrorless likely have the iris mechanically coupled to the zoom ring, so that it is always a constant iris ratio to focal length. Fuji for some dumb reason decided to do it electronically and my guess is the iris is only updated after it stops detecting a zoom action. That said, Fuji needs a Mk2 of this lens. The 16-55 is garbage for hybrid shooters and any equivalent 24-105 f/4 full frame lenses outperform it in every way with more range and OIS. I really want the X-H2S, but I would never in my life buy that junk lens. They could have had some inbuilt firmware that uploads from the body to update the behaviour of the lens. Or I'm pretty positive a camera firmware is more than enough, unless the lens is physically not capable of smooth iris changes. It's a possibility considering the age of the lens.

I am sure it is a great camera. I love my Fuji gear even though I rarely shoot video. I love how many of the KZbin influencers will state as part of their disclosure that Fuji (or whatever manufacturer) did not have any say in the review and did not get to preview the review. While this is likely to be true.......try giving a piece of gear a bad review and see if you get any more stuff sent to you in advance to review. I promise you that if you give them a bad review you will have to buy your own gear to review. So even though you may not think you are being influenced by this fact.....you likely are. Just food for thought and not a direct criticism of you Gerald as I really enjoy your reviews even though they are video centric and I am primarily a stills shooter. Don't know if you still have this camera or not, I was wondering if you can test the externally recorded braw output, consider blackmagic update their braw sdk, and it works perfectly on Panasonic S5IIX. In my experience with X-H2S braw though, I notice that the camera doesn't output log image to recorder, rather a graded image, camera hdmi setting show PROVIA(camera and hdmi), so the exposure tools recorders have are not working properly. Also, when recording raw externally, the iso range is restricted between 1000 and 12000(just like in the HLG mode, strange), and it seems like this applied to all the fuji camera that can recording braw, including the newer X-S20.

When shooting internally F-log1 the low ISO starts from 640 and switches to 2nd range from ISO 2000 (not 1600). For F-log2 the ISO range starts from 1250, but the 2nd range kicks in from ISO 4000 (not 3200). So the interesting part is that from my tests the 2nd range for F-logs start from ISO 2000 for F-log1 and ISO 4000 for F-log2. Which is 1/3 stop higher then what Gerald is stating. The testing was made exposing all shots equally for different ISOs and the noise difference between the ranges was very clear. Am I missing here something, could my camera be somehow different or what could it be?

Maybe he has a preproduction model and yours is a production model. Same thing happened with the sony a7s3 when it was released. The iso range was slightly dif from the preproduction version

Hey Gerald, can you confirm the native ISO for FLOG1 & FLOG2? What you said on camera versus on screen were different at around 14:13. Thanks! Also any update on 21:06 regarding the brightness change? Does it change the exposure settings?

It's a real shame about the AF and stabilization in video, it could have been a great all-around camera for Fuji, now it's just a good camera. I hope it can be fixed with a firmware update.

Looks amazing, But I will probably wait until the X-H3 is released. I am too spoiled with the Sony Autofocusing. Hopefully Fuji will make a even more cinema camera model in the future. I have to admit the colors look incredible from the Fuji line.

dynamic range is everything for video - I'd say. I mean... dynamic range, and the handling of both highlights and the darker areas is what makes a video that extra bit of cinematic look (besides of course the physical lighting skills), right?

16:41 Ok but if we don't have an Apple laptop or desktop what do we do ??? Do the H.265 is okay for editing if we make proxies before ? Because for color grading, 422 10bit is clearly better than 420 8bit right ? I'm currently searching for a camera capable of C4K 422 10bit with a log a profile and if it can have a slow motion mode (even a 60p mode) also in 422 its real bonus. So I was considering the XH2S but I don't if it's a good idea with what you say...

11/10 content as usual. Would you be able to explain "full range" vs "video range" and how that interacts with various codecs in a future video? Information on the subject seems to be sparce!

I am almost convinced that i will purchase the Fuji H2S bc as a IT specific youtube creator in my humble opinion the Fuji H2S knocks the way more expensive and now discontinued Sony A 7 S 3 kind of obsolete and by far overpriced. As always thank you Gerald for your outstanding Camera reviews & by the Way i love Davinci resolve way more than Apple’s Final Cut Pro and this comes from me having been a long time loyal Apple customers. But since Cook took over as CEO he kind of abandoned the professional users which Apple used to have while Steve Jobs was still in charge of Apple. 🎬☂️😊

Another amazing scientific analysis. Thank you. I just got the X-H2S, and coming for an X-T4 I was overwhelmed with the video codecs and compression rates just like you described, and also noticed that FLOG2 is noisier than FLOG. Can you recommend a reference for what bit rates are needed vs frame rates for the various codecs? That would be helpful. Also, would exposing to the right in FLOG2 reduce the noise in your opinion? Many thanks.

You're Canadian. How many degrees centigrade is "warm studio" lol. Is it like 25degrees? 15 degrees centigrade? At least pour some maple syrup and let us see the consistency at that temperature. Great video! I switched to Panasonic because I needed that fan, but I'm not sure I want to bolt on a fan and not be able to close my lcd screen. I mean the external fan is genius! Much easier to clean and replace. But I feel I may break my screen if I can't fold it back 👍

I agree, they packed an overwhelming amount of record settings into this. What would be nice is if they added a preset system so you didn't always have to dig through all the settings to get what you need.

Good morning! It’s been a little over 2 years now and I am curious what folks think about the H2S? How does it hold up after 2 years? I’m in the market for a professional B-cam and APSC interests me. Yes, there are killer deals on FF bodies but I already own one. Absolutely no need for a 2nd. --------------------- Currently: - I own a FF (one I bought a little over a year ago and have no plans of upgrading for at least 5 years 😉) *not in the market* - I own an X-T4 and yes, it’s a damn good “B” cam… it’s become something I take wherever… whenever. It’s my hobbyist cam that pulls its weight in the professional realm - although it’s now showing age… I don’t think I’ll let my x-t4 go 😅 yes it’s showing age. Yes it’s in a weird spot, some people love it. Many saw no need for it - and from a practicality standpoint, that makes sense. Me? My X-T4 is to me what Jessie was to Zaeed Massani (Rip Mr Sachs). I trust it and will use it until it wears down. And I’ll still keep it around.

Funnily enough I'm in a similar situation, shooting with an X-T4 as my A cam and I now need a second body so I'll make that my B cam and keep hoping between the XH2S and the FX30. I have all the Fuji stuff, cards, batteries, lenses, knowledge etc, but dam if Gerald isn't spot on when he says he finds himself switching to manual focus a lot. On a recent shoot I think about 25% of my shots the camera couldn't grab focus for and I'd quickly flick over to manual to get what I needed. My gut feeling tells me the XH2S is likely much the same performance wise, which is a real shame as I love the Fuji colours and noise character, and generally still really like my X-T4 anyway.

If you pair the XH2-s with fast lenses of F1.4 or lower you get the same look as Full frame cameras, BUT with stunning Fuji-Colors and the "fun" of shooting fujifilm

Did the XH2S fix exposure stepping when zooming? The 16-55 for example is notorious for it due to sudden iris changes while zooming.

The XH2S and XH2 are great cameras with those 14+ stops of dynamic range score by using davinci resolve noise reduction. But the noise quality and appearace should be taken with a grain of salt. Some would like its fine, sharp, and gritty looking noise but some would probably also prefer blocky but softer noise like what other camera brands produce. It all boils down to your style and its features are outstanding for a 26mp camera.
