I love my 24 GM, but can definitely see how this lens could be even better for a lot of people. This seems like the perfect vlogging lens, as it gives just enough room for a person's head to comfortably fit in frame. I'm more of a photo guy, so the low light & portraiture benefits of the Aperture and slightly longer focal length of the GM better suit me, but this lens looks to be a killer for video & architecture.

Awesome lens for sure. I love it for photos primarily but is still awesome for hand carry vlog style without the painful barrel distortion of other stubby lenses. It's not going to replace the 35 in vids for me though. Great vid. Thanks Gerald.
@nmbr734 жыл бұрын
I'm considering the 35 to do talking head videos on APS-C (I don't like that 'big nose' look of wide lenses) ... would you recommend it for this scenario (or tend more to a 20mm'ish given the APS-C crop)?!?
@jaydivina5334 жыл бұрын
nmbr73 I am not sure if you were asking me or Gerald but a 35 or a 16-35 on a full frame for talking heads seems almost natural to me. A 24 on an APS-C has almost no annoying center or barrel distortion. When I use APS-C I usually bring a 16-35 and a speedbooster and find myself floating in the 22 to 35 range.
@nmbr734 жыл бұрын
@@jaydivina533 I was asking you 😬 I should have mentioned; my bad! The more I thank you for your very helpful answer! I'm an absolut beginner - especially when it comes to videography. I think I will go for the 18-135 Kit first and then see what zoom I tend to regularly use - to hopefully find the prime that could potentially suit me best in most situations ... if this makes any sense 🤷🏻♂️
@jaydivina5334 жыл бұрын
@@nmbr73 That makes sense. It's also very possible you could find that the kit lens does what you need and not need another lens until you start tinkering in other things. Have fun and learn with it. No one knows what you are going for better than you.

"For real estate" I haven't met one colleague that shoots with a prime lens for real estate! Most used range is 16-21mm and the only prime lens one considers for that line of work is an adapted 17mm tilt shift Canon lens. 12-24/4 G & 16-35/4 G are much more practical for real estate as you'd be shooting between f/8 to f/11 most of the time. 24/1.8 G is more suited for event photography as it gives 1.3 stops over a 24-70/2.8 in low light situations. Just saying!

I don’t own a full frame camera but I do own the PL 10-25 f1.7 and I have come to really appreciate the 20mm focal length. It’s wide but not to wide and with the close focusing and fast aperture you can get really unique looking shots that incorporate the background into the shot. Sony did a great job of offering quality for an affordable price here.

Never been a fan of prime lenses just because I usually use my camera for traveling and I like zoom lenses to quickly change focal lenghts depending on what I see and don't have the time to be changing lenses just because when you travel with someone else you don't want to keep them waiting while you are taking pictures and videos, but I'm always interested in Geralds videos because they are much more interesting than other reviewers and you know... he's crazy

I spent 2 weeks in Japan last September and the 24mm GM never left my camera. I brought the 55 1.8 and Tamron 28-75 as well, but never felt the need for them. For me, travel is all about capturing your subject in context, so a wide prime like the GM, or this new lens is extremely versatile. Now granted, I did a whole lot of night photography in cities, where the 24 GM really flexes, but I never felt constrained, and by mid-trip, I stopped bringing along my other lenses in my day pack.
@EduarFilms4 жыл бұрын
@@MegaNardman yeah the 24mm is a very nice focal length, I like using it a lot, but I do sometimes have the need to get wider for getting shots like architecture in tight places that sometimes the 24mm is not enough, this is why I find the Tamron 17-28mm my best go-to lens when traveling, I usually carry the 28-75 as well and use it on special situations that I want to do some nice close-ups and those two are for the price of the Sony 24mm so for me I get more value for my money there :)

I had the Tamron 17-28 f2.8. I was super happy with the lens, because it is a good WA Zoom Lens. After i bought the Sony 20 f1.8, i never used the tamron again. The Sony is fantastic. I sold the tamron and i don‘t regret it. I don‘t miss the 3mm more at the wide end of the tamron. F/1.8 is more useful for me than the wider focal length of the tamron. I shoot landscapes and the milkyway with the Sony (and before the sony with the tamron). I also have 35mm, but only f2. Maybe this is helpful for you.
