I've always been a fan of Gerber but lately they've been getting more wrong then right.

Well. The blade wasn’t designed for that treatment. Got my LST in 1992, still have it. Perfect condition. Use the knife the way it’s meant for. Why destroy the blade on purpose.

I've been using Gerber LST's since the late 1980's and have been v very pleased with them in many situations to include ultra light backpacking, canoe camping, kayak camping, and every single day carry. I've tried other pocketknives ranging from Swiss Army knives to other kickbacks, but always end up coming back to the LST. Apparently the tester loses sight of the fact that its a pocket knife. Its mot a heavy duty pry tool, its not a survival knife, although it cleans fish and small game well, and its not a combat knife, although it will do a awesome amount of damage. My fist LST took me 20 years to wear our. My second got dropped over board by my better half when out using. My second one that I bought last spring is doing fine. It opens boxes, cuts twine in the garden, cuts food stuff our hiking, and so far is as great as its predecessors. The tester obviously had an agenda to trash the knife for sone reason known only to him. This knife is a popular knife with many peopler a good reason; they work VERY well as an EDC pocket knife that is so light and flat you can forget its in your pocket. But it will cut when you need it to.

I have 5 LSTs and 2 LST 2s and have only one that had a similar issue, I premed the pin and it tightened up just fine. This knife has been in production since the early 80’s. The handle is Zytel and is very durable and an excellent knife.

You just got one that slipped through quality control, return it and get another one and test it at the store. I have the LST ultralight for over 20 years, no issues. I Just got the Gerber Bear Grylls Compact Scout (Made in China) and there is a definite build quality difference. It's tight to open, but there are no gaps, plus I thought I would like the half serrations, but I don't. I'm thinking about the US1, and keep the scout in my tackle box for fishing.

My Gerber 600 I bought back in '89 is still going strong. I've tried newer Gerber knives and have not been impressed.

The short light weight lock back knives are a different knife altogether. The general lack of any supporting liners lends itself to an understanding that they aren't to be considered beater knives at all. I really haven't seen anyone do comparisons on these type knives. I've been carrying a Gerber US1 in my pocket everywhere for well over a year and a half now. I even carried it to church this morning. Mine is very sturdy. I use it to open boxes and cut cordage mostly. Great little knife for use around the garden too. The US1 is very much the same size as the LST, and I think you'll really appreciate the grippiness of the handle material. Another similar style knife I have been looking at is the Case Caliber series and Executive series lock backs. Sorry about that knife, GLP.

Yeah I really considered the US1. looking at its design it appears to be just an updated LST. I'll look at those Case lockbacks, mostly looking for cheap, light, simple and $10-30

It’s a keychain knife. Why are you doing that?... any knife will flex in a vise. Unsub.

It is an ultralight knife and should be compared to other knives in the same weight class. I have the smaller one that I have carried as a backup for decades. It is okay for small jobs but I would not try to split wood with it. What other ultralight knives at a similar price do you like better than the LST?

I agree paraframes are awful knives but you have an LST there and I think you have it backwards: Gerber as a company sucks ass or at least in recent years have plummeted in quality ever since fiscars or fiscus? Whatever the company that is mainly known for manufacturing elementary school scissors amongst other things, but ever since they bought em out Gerber sold out both litterally as well as fundamentally... HOWEVER, it's thru the always Portland, OR made LST and its current production model that is more or less unchanged from it's 80s and 90s ancestors that earned it's slot in the legendary/iconic pocket knives of history and an even smaller spot as being one of those iconic knives that not only is still being produced today but afaik, since the time of it's production it has never really NOT been produced and always in good ol weird Portland Oregon. LST is an amazing knife BECAUSE of it's simplicity and unwillingness to "evolve" into something unnecessary and flashy, even over the years to some people's disappointment there has been the addition of and the discontinuation of various colors an optional pocket clip, but then almost to keep with it's simplicity and reliability eliminated the clip altogether and I'm not 100% but I believe they only make em in standard black now with standard blade (no serrations) It's a very simple knife but one whos users see it and instantly recognize it and as goofy or cliche as it may sound it looks so much more to us than just a cheap common black handle folding pocket knife,.cuz it was THE first simple common black plastic handle folding pocket knife. ;-) ...and wait a minute besides all that why would you ever count on a Gerber LST to field dress anything other than maybe a squirrel... Now that's not to say that I don't think that the lil Gerber could handle dressing a buck or even a moose if you had a sharpening stone and a lot of time and good gloves as the handle would start digging into your hand but that's all because it's well beyond the realm of what the LST was designed to do. It's an EDC knife. I know some people hunt for a living/damn near every day and could argue that THEIR EDC knife needs to be able to reliably and efficiently dress game. But in general most peoples EDC knife is being used to carry out simple yet often necessary cutting tasks thruout day to day lives i.e. letters, breakdown boxes, threads/tags off clothing, cutting fishing line or Paracord, stripping wire, scoring wood for cuts, cutting pills/medication, food prep etc etc... None of which requires anywhere near the amount of blade to handle solidarity as you demonstrate such as prying etc. What you should be using is a dedicated tool for the job such as a full tang fixed blade knife or possibly a oversized folder from cold steel or even a spydie manix XL with reliable axis-style lock bar or if you want to stick to more traditional folders and save the bank then go with classic buck 110 or 112... Just don't bash on a tool cuz your using it beyond it's capabilities that apparently aren't clear to everyone. THIS right here is the reason why flashlights come with warnings that say they are bright and hot or why knives come with silly crude illustrations on what not to do with folding pocket knives like throwing as a spear, or PRYING etc etc.

1:07 that's not the gerber paraframe?? I'm guessing that was a mistake. 2:21 oh shit, I have an old LST I found on a beach when I was like 3 or 4 back in 2001-2002 and it's perfectly even still, I've been looking at their new LST and blades and they just don't seem to look as nice as the blade I found, I'm guessing they stopped manufacturing stuff as well. Mine does not have the Laser etched GERBER logo on the blade though and just has the GERBER engraving and 400 Steel and Portland Oregon engravings. Here's an image of the alignment of the blade and locking mechanism I took of mine, i.imgur.com/LM2vqPI.jpg As well as the weight of the blade being incredibly balanced, i.imgur.com/Fq76iY9.jpg That definitely is not how the blade should look and possibly is a manufacturing error, I would try to get a replacement from Gerber, and if they don't give you one then that really shows how much they've dropped in quality. I don't get on how they could drop the quality of the knife but add engravings to the knife on the blade. I really would contact them about this and try to get a replacement because this knife is good as hell.

I wonder who he works for. Taking a great knife and bashing it is easy. Showing off its defining qualities takes thought and time. Uhh it didn't survive the sledghammer test. Its not a primary knife its a pocket knife. Thats it make it out of titanium and give it a pivot screw.

Are there counterfeits floating around now? I pulled out my 15 year old LST and it exhibits none of the problems you show. However I also bought one from Amazon two weeks ago and it has the same problems as yours. Note that I purchased from Amazon itself not from a vendor so it SHOULD be authentic. In terms of Gerber quality etc. Nick Shabazz did a visit to the Gerber factory and they are apparently in the process of cleaning up their act. Here's a little history on the iconic LST, which blew me away in 1981 for its "plastic only" handle - back then Buck 110's with all that brass and steel defined pocket knives: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackie_Collins

Since the fake (IMO) world crisis, where most of the knife and not only knife, production, went to China, the quality has gone down. Actually even the products that their production didn't move to China, even these show less quality than they used to be.Lucky if someone hasn't fall to the marketing trap about super steels etc and still prefers older products!

By far the worst knife I've ever owned.! Gerber P.O.S. Dull when I got it, still dull to this day. Wish I had purchased a Ka-Bar Dozier instead. "Hindsight."
