sure you could use the knife as a de-boning knife, but the knife with the orange sheath is a Morakniv Companion.

Just one correction.... it does not have a full metal blade going all the way through. That knife has two separate pieces of metal, which makes it way less strong. Having pointed that out, the rest of what you say is fine I guess.

thanks for the correction

You need a real knife out in the woods. A small light fixed blade. Check out the White River Knives M1 Backpacker

I had not been backpacking for 60 years. Became scoutmaster at age 78. Attended several training sessions. One of the instructors (for the past three years) only knife was very similar to yours. I carry to knives, Victronix and a Benchmade fixed blade.

You carry whatever you want, but and full tang fixed blade is what i would recommend, they don't have to be huge, but are generally more reliable

How about swiss army knife 91mm? Recommended?

The LST is good for 99.99% of your needs. I like the Victorinox Classic because it has a scissors and tweezers but the Gerber is a solid choice too.

The best tool I have found to carry in the outdoors is the Gerber 600 multi-tool. Its little on the heavy side but, worth its weight in gold.

As a man from Texas that has grown up hunting and camping in the woods I’d say you should have a good fixed blade. With a knife it’s not about optimization of your trip by going light weight or this is all I need. It’s about when Shit goes proper sideways and you need the most important tool that one can have to help you get through it.
@IdRatherBeHiking2 жыл бұрын
I agree with that, can't go wrong with a good sturdy fixed blade

First of all great channel dude. I can't believe you don't have more views. As far as carrying a big knife goes, I carry a big knife for the what if. It's easy to get turned around out there and if it ever happened I would surely be thankful I had a way to process fire Wood. Everyone has different luxury items I guess for me it's peace of mind. Keep it up
@IdRatherBeHiking3 жыл бұрын
I used to carry the big knife for peace of mind but I just make sure I have bear spray and am drastically cutting down on weight. I also carry 10lbs of camera gear all the time so any weight savings is very helpful
@yetitpa20293 жыл бұрын
Lol I just did mount Albert Edward and I just brought a pocket knife to save weight. I totally get where you are coming from now. I used it once to open a bag of powdered potatoes lol

I have that knife and it is in my pack however I usually bring a Swiss Army knife but not one that has 100 attachments, just a simple Army knife.

I would at least take a Mora Companion HD. Not that heavy. As said before the orange knife looks like a Companion.

I carry a ka-bar bk9 for protection against cougars, never had a bear give me any problems so I carry it solely for protection against mountain lions. Cougar attacks (when they do happen) happen fast so I keep it on my hip all of the time😂😂

Dumb question, 90 degrees spine?
@whitemexican39232 жыл бұрын
This refers to the what you might think of as the "backside of the blade" that is not sharp. If it is not rounded, but squarish, 90 degrees it is easier or able to scrape. See "backsides" of knives are rounded and unable to scrape. The scraping is handy when one is scraping wood or a ferro rod to produce sparks.
@phillipnunya67933 жыл бұрын
That big ass knife is a classic bad example of a big knife. I suggest you get a midsized fixed blade though. Not as heavy, but still way more capable and durable than that little pocket knife. You don't want to be without a knife out there.
@IdRatherBeHiking3 жыл бұрын
On solo hikes I take my fish deboning knife, strong light and 3x bigger than my little knife. The rambo one is retired
@fred77053 жыл бұрын
I would never put my life in the hands of gerber. Cheap steel, poor construction. The only reliable thing you showed in your vid is a mora. Lots of safer options out there.

I feel like people who say you have to carry a big knife are just tacticool and don't actually go hiking much or even go to the woods much. Hiking isn't bushcraft or cosplaying rambo. anyway it's best to just bring the right tool for the job.
@IdRatherBeHiking3 жыл бұрын
I can understand bringing a bigger knife on solo hikes.. gives a sense of security but really the bear spray is the tool of choice
@whitemexican39232 жыл бұрын
Please grow up and stop insulting by referring to "Rambo knives" or "Playing Rambo".
@whitemexican39232 жыл бұрын
Glad you found a knife that you like for backpacking. Except your bias shows in that you call the "big" knife a "Rambo knife". Why not just call it a "big knife"? As far as fighting off a bear or something like that - it is not realistic. No hiker is going to fight off a bear. Now, in my opinion, carrying a minimal knife like that barely meets a standard that indicates responsibility for ones self. What is going to happen is you and folk who carry smaller or no knife will be borrowing "large" or "big" knifes from other hikers. One question, what if no other hikers with "big" knifes are present? What are you going to do then? And any knife even yours could be used as a "boning knife'(doubt most of your readers even understand that term). In the end, we each carry what we like and I am glad you at least have a knife and feel good about it. HOWEVER, that "big" knife you showed briefly-ha! It is a little big for backpacking!!
@IdRatherBeHiking2 жыл бұрын
Ya that big knife is too big for backpacking, I call it a Rambo knife because it looks like a knife Rambo would carry and I like a little flavor and spice in my vocab
