Except the Gear Grylls is NOT full tang (only on the pro version) I have the Bear Grylls Ultimate Pro since 2014, I broke it last year (yes that can hapen) and Gerber was fast and problem-free to replace it (in the US)

🇺🇸🤠🇲🇽 turns out there are alot of "expert "knive makers here on U tube. kindia like all the "self-defense experts" who have never trained,had a real fight,prepared others to fight.. this is good steel kindia like 440 stainless. the Cr 17Mov has some added benefits to make it better then 440. honestly this knive will last longer then most people expect & if it ever does break gerber will replace/fix.. So enjoy & use the knife🇺🇸🤠🇲🇽. carry a back up knife if u feel the need.. just like fighters have corner men to help them during a fight.. enjoy life use the knife dont over think it..because me i will be using mine.

They aren’t arguing that it will break. Just the soft steel means you need to sharpen it more frequently. This can be bad in that you will shortened the life span of the knife or having the knife dull before you finish the task. However soft steels have a place if you don’t have any hard use plan for it or you need to get it back sharp in the field I say. Luckily we now have more better budget steels now for not much more than 440c and mov.

Love Bear Grylls Survival knife. Have one since 2014. It's a original knife with useful serrations in it's blade. Althoug some limitations as a real survival knife, it is perfect for a hunting, camping or fishing knife. Normally, I bring a machete or an axe with me, besides the Bear Grylls knife for heavy duties. No complain about the knife. Very useful.

found this is another site talking about the steel type: 7cr17mov Steel Composition For what it’s worth, 7cr17mov is strong steel and one you can rely on. Its high Chromium and Manganese content will keep your knife strong for a long time. If you’re familiar with the 440a, you’ll notice it’s a reinforced version of that steel. 18% of Chromium: Makes the knife stronger and keeps it sharp for longer. It also improves corrosion resistance and wears resistance. 1% of Manganese: Improves the blade’s hardness and brittleness. 1% of Silicon: Increases the metal’s strength. 0.75% of Carbon: Improves both wear and corrosion resistance. It also helps with hardness. 0.75% of Molybdenum: Improves strength and machinability. 0.6% of Nitrogen: Increases edge retention and strength. 0.04% of Phosphorus: Improves strength. 0.04% of Sulfur: For machinability purposes. 7cr17mov Steel Properties 7cr17mov can handle a tough job but not too many of them. It has high wear and corrosion resistance but features poor levels of sharpness and toughness. The edge retention isn’t the best but you’re definitely getting more than what you pay for. Wear resistance: The steel’s best attribute. As you know, 7cr17mov can handle itself in most scenarios. For low-end steel, it’s way more than you can expect. Corrosion resistance: Another high point for 7cr17mov. Humid places are no match for this steel. Edge retention: Depending on how you look at it, it could be good or bad. It’s not that good in general terms, but rather good for its price range. Sharpness: Since 7cr17mov is not that tough, it’s easy to sharp. You will have to sharpen it often, unfortunately. Toughness: It’s not the toughest tool in the shed but decent nonetheless. Not the best option if you expect a stronger-than-average blade.

@@codysullivan656 it makes sharpening more awkward. I carry other saw tools so would never use the serrations on a knife. Plus it takes away from the blades cutting edge. They should atleast do what glock does and put the serrations on the spine of the blade, but even covering the entire spine means you can use it to strike a fire steel or use it to baton wood.

@@codysullivan656 My main gripe with serrations is that I HATE sharpening them! Plus, they always put them in the most often used spot on the blade, so they are usually the first thing to go dull. Also, not that you can't carve things like tent stakes and pot hangers with the middle or belly of the blade, I find it easier to do with the part of the edge closest to the ricasso. The only thing I actually like to have serrations for is rope or cordage, and I don't find that they cut it a whole heck of lot better than a properly sharpened plain edge. They're just more of an inconvenience to me than anything. But they do look cool! And I'd imagine they sell better because of that alone.

@@josephscott3875 I've used it in various outings and it's done a good job, excellent at splitting wood but for me the only draw back is the small amount of cutting blade. Half is normal and half is serrated, but as an all round knife it does the job and the fire lighter and whistle are good little extras... don't bother with the sharpening attachment on the back though... it's very course.

No, its smart business. For one, they already have the production lines to make it. Second, Im sure a lot of people skipped over the Grylls knife because of the Bear Grylls branding on it. I wished it was more like the Ultimate Pro, though. With USA made steel.

Actually it didn't fail at all. Gerber sold millions of those ultimate knives, but getting into bed with Bear Grylls while having this knife made in China hurt Gerber's credibility within the knife community. Since the license with BG has run it's course, Gerber decided not to renew it, and thus had to rebrand it to keep it around. The fact that they rebranded it rather then discontinuing it shows how successful this Wal-Mart knife was and still is to the uninitiated knife buyer that doesn't understand their knife steels..

Dope knife my cusin found a $100 dollar gift card on the ground at target checked the balance and the thing had a little over $80 ended up using it to buy one of these knifes and some other cool little peices of gear and this thing is dope firestarted works great and the blade has help up soild knife at a good price point 10/10

The ultimate is a terrible knife, 7cr chineseium. The strong arm is only 420HC but it’s made in the USA and is tough as nails. But I know what you mean about the prodigy and the strong arm.

On the downside, it can be scratched by children's school scissors, and that popsicle stick will be needed to re-sharpen it if you cut anything tougher than a stale Twinkie.

I picked one up today at my local WM and for $48 I cant complain. I mean for $48 it seems to be built well, the sheath is great for the price point. Someone in comments was talking crap about this knife.... So to them - if you want a high carbon knife then go buy a Benchmade, or other type brand. But personally i wont waste my money on those "high end" brands. I took a benchmade knife and my gerber prodigy with me on a month long camping trip in the rockys when i was done with my trip the only knife that survived was the Gerber Prodigy. The prodigy wasn't pretty anymore but i dont buy knives to be pretty, they have a job to do and i want quality, affordability. And as a plus whenever I have broken a Gerber product I simply pack it up, send it in and they replace the item with no questions asked. That to me is worth everything, a company that sticks to their word on a warranty even if they can see they clearly abuse the product that you sent in for replacement. I will gladly stick with Gerber Products.

The edge is not very sharp and reading about 7cr17mov steel, it can't hold a very sharp edge nor stay "normally sharp" very long. Plus there's a rough sharpener included that doesn't feel smooth enough to put a sharp edge on the blade and there's no way of sharpening the serrated part of the blade. The case is good but the stamped white Gerber logo makes it look cheap and tacky. The firestarter rod is held upside down in the case so if you don't put it back in fully or if it catches on something such as a bush and gets pulled out a little then it will fall out and you'll lose it. My first Gerber knife. My last one was a $10 no brand knife made in Brazil. It was sharper and better in every way. I haven't taken the Gerber knife camping yet, but I was very disappointed with my first impressions of the knife and case. This is a $25 knife (incl the firestarter and crappy sharpener, $10 without those add one) that's priced a lot higher just because of the brand name.

I think what people don't understand is this is a 35-40 knife. You can't find knives that pack all the features this one has at its price point. It's a good knife for the low price. Obviously it's not a Benchmade etc.

You can get knives in the 35-40 range that use d2 steel, or Swedish steels which are better. Get a mora ( kansbol or strike which has a built in fire starter) and it will be more than enough plus better built quality.
