+Shag Me Frida ... Really? You would think from what she says that she has only known older, transgender women of privilege that had backgrounds as crossdressers- people that were married and had children (basically living stereotypical male lives and then as she says- transitioning to being stereotypical females, not that I think there is anything inherently less valid about this path). This is not the experience of 99% of the transwomen (or transmen) that I have known over the last several years). Granted, this "type" of transsexual was perhaps more visible in my early days in the gender studies community (around 30 years ago) most likely because they were the few that were in a financial and social position to transition. Times have changed. Times have changed dramatically. Access to information and the ability to transition earlier is much easier. Most transpeople now- and certainly including transwomen in that- are every bit as fluid and varied in their gender expression as any other women or men. I don't disagree with everything she says though. In fact, I will find myself agreeing with her on something and then she will slip in something else that is totally untrue. As far as "men" not being able to be women, I can only say that I am myself. I don't speak for all women, nor can I define womanhood. Nobody can. I know there are things that other women experience that I never experienced, but the reverse is true as well. As far as transwomen, I can only say that I was one of the lucky ones that *was* able to transition early in life (in large part because I did have an intersex condition, although I still consider myself having been of trans experience), have now been married to a wonderful guy for almost 25 years, and have largely had a very normal life. I easily blend in with other women and all of my close friends are women and always have been, other than a few gay male friends or friends that are husbands to my female friends. I am virtually the opposite of what she thinks transpeople are, as are most transpeople I know that have transitioned in the last 10-15 years and some much longer ago.
@shagmefrida41768 жыл бұрын
How can an intersex person be trans? The more fluid gender is, the sillier the whole concept of transgender is. I really just can not see intersex in the same way as being transgender. Gender identity is one's own business, as is the case for every person and the obsession with it is mind boggling, regressive and hurts women.
@DanaTS8 жыл бұрын
Shag Me Frida ... Well, if you don't have to think about your gender identity or be in the unfortunate experience of having to change your sex so that others see you as how you identify, I can see how you might think it is "one's own business", and an "obsession" for transpeople. If you were trans and had to deal with the enormous challenges and dangers that this often comes with it, you might feel differently. As far as regressive and dangerous to women, I find that laughable. I think being able to live expressing your gender in the way most comfortable to you is anything but that, in fact quite the opposite. I think it is very progressive and saying it "hurts women" is totally without merit. As far as the more fluid gender is, the sillier the concept of being transgender is "to you"- well, guess what... Not everyone feels fluid in their gender identity. That goes for ALL different types of people, including transgender and intersex people. Gender is often seen as a binary (not always) with much grey area in between and being trans or intersex does not preclude a person to feeling "fluid" or not in their own identity. Any "obsession" you may see with it though may simply be people attempting to be happy and live their lives in the way in which they feel most comfortable. Unfortunately, we do not live in a bubble and sometimes people in the gender community have to fight for the most basic of rights. I don't consider that an obsession. As far as how an intersex person can also be transgender, that is easy to answer. I said I feel like I lived the transgender experience. I was born and raised in the 70's when the way we identified an intersex person's gender was very archaic (and it still is to a large extent). I unfortunately was assigned a gender that I did not identify as and given drugs as a minor that I never would have agreed to in adulthood if I knew better. I had to take many of the same steps that transpeople do and I was often identified as trans unknowingly by others along the way. My story is not particularly unusual either. Likewise, I think we will eventually have definitive proof that transgender people do indeed have brain structures of the sex opposite their birth sex (and some studies have already confirmed this), therefore, also making them intersex. As an intersex person, I am certainly not offended by any transperson that also claims the label that *wasn't* born with any outward intersex signs. We already know it is possible to be born and live a normal life with a body that is outwardly completely female in appearance and actually be a genetic male (complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome). Is she not a woman if she only discovers this later in life due to infertility or some other reason? Like I said- sex, gender, and gender identity are not simple at all. They are very complicated and personal experiences to each individual. One person living as their true self does NOTHING to harm anyone else.
@DanaTS8 жыл бұрын
Also, please not that when I am speaking of fluidity... I am speaking of fluidity not just in gender *identity*, but also perhaps more importantly in gender *expression*. The rest of the world sees a person's gender expression (degree of desire for masculine verses feminine expression) much more easily than their degree of fluidity in gender identity. Ultimately, someone else's identity or gender expression has ZERO to do with me and in no way effects me. I simply accept that there are different types of men and women and we all have our own personal crosses to bare so to speak.

Thank you to all three women involved in this intelligent and important conversation. Sadly this is something that literally could not happen in any American MSM outlet, as Ms. Greer's observations would be falsely characterized as "transphobic" in order to silence her opinion. Amazing.

I am gay woman and I am 60 years old . When I was at college in the 1980’s a male lecturer admitted that it’s a man’s world and if I wanted to earn any respect I would have to give 150 % in the work place but a man would only have to give 60% to earn the same respect and would be paid more . I thanked him for his honesty and he wasn’t wrong . I endured sexism , chauvinism, misogyny , bullying and unwanted sexual attention. I kept my head held I high and behaved with dignity as my mother taught me too , didn’t play the victim card and went through the right channels when appropriate. I am now happy and respected in my work place as I move forward to my retirement hopefully in the next five years . But let’s be honest the work , pay and unwanted attention problem hasn’t changed so why hell do men want to become a woman .
@rogerthornhill1491 Жыл бұрын
@@darthvader1793 . I think the point they’re pushing is that they don’t want to become women. Is that they are? 🤷♂️ Another misunderstood nation is that for the majority of men for the average man it’s not particularly fun. Most men believe it would be a better life being the average woman? Right or wrong? Who knows? With regard to unwonted male attention. Has been your experience that the men involved have had bad will behind their attraction to you? Or perhaps your discussed in there being unable to control themselves? Do you think most men struggle with heterosexuality and being unable to control themselves in that area? If so, why do you think that is the case?
@streamsofsunlight8 ай бұрын
They want to be a woman because they won’t have to deal with most of the challenges that come with being a real woman, but they’ll get the attention and affirmation that is their true desire. Also, as men, they have a male sense of entitlement that they can be and do whatever they want regardless of what women think of it, and as misogynists, they believe a made man will be better than a real woman ever can be.

What I think it's really interesting is that she's not against transgenders, but mostly cares about the "wifes" of transgender women. The wife is cast aside and the children of the marriage are left as bastards... She's right on that. Even though I firmly support trans women and I think they should be respected and protected against violence and abuse.

I think what puzzles some of us 2nd-wavers is that we argued to discard gender stereotypes - and now these stereotypes are being used to "diagnosis" transgenderism. What was viewed as false is now being promoted as innate by some people.

+Old Simo That boys are taught to reject their mothers as masculinity. Boys reach an age where women are interfering in their lives, where girls are noticeably different, where girls are attractive, but also annoyingly have different interests and ways of interaction. I'm surprised that she's generally quite reasonable for a feminist.The girls were asking questions leaning towards 'blame men' and Germaine had a 'women can make their own decisions, be accountable for their own actions' attitude and even said it's tough being a man. Well you don't see that every day :)

like any socio-political perspective, feminism is not a monolith, there are many versions of feminism. the ones you are most likely to hear about or see are the loudest or the ones being pointed to because they are easy to mock. it can be difficult to describe oneself as a feminist because of the assumptions that go along with it. it also doesn't help that much of the criticism of feminism is uninformed or facile.
@salvolondon7 жыл бұрын
That's because you have the narrow minded idea that feminis is all the same and all about hating and blaming men . Especially nowadays here is this stereotype that all feminist are obese butch lesbians who hate men and say there are 8000 genders . Those are not real feminists . Those are nuts of the new millennial . Real feminists are like Germaine Greer . And she is not the only one .

these student protests in cardiff were not supported by all students. there is a mop in almost every university that controls the student unions and inflicts their ways on everyone. it is like fascists...unfortunately that is what it is, students unions are very totalitarian and no one with different opinion can speak...the actually problem, is that the ones not agreeing dont speak up...this has been my problem everytime I protest these mops...other students coward down afraid to be target by these student mops...no other group has ever had so much power out of the blue like the trans-ideology mops in universities...look at gay rights, women rights (now being destroyed eroded by the so called men rights and trans rights) black rights...they never had much power...despite their genuine efforts and serious concerns...only this trans movement have huge support from management, corporations, governments?! this should make you think, because no rights movement has ever had this support, so what is this trans movement, is deffinitely not a civil rights movement...something very fishy is going on...but young people in the age of technology seemed to have substituted their brain for their facebook/twitter account.

1. Just how much of anti-feminism has Greer read? For instance: Warren Farrell, Christine Sommers, Camille Paglia, Esther Vilar? Has Greer even heard of Wendy McElroy? I rather doubt that Greer has ever watched anti-feminist KZbinrs such as Karen Straughan, Diana Davison, Wooly Bumblebee, Hannah Wallen, Lauren Southern etc. 2. Some years ago, Greer made bigoted comments about trans women. I was enormously disappointed. Such views are a very ugly side of 21st century gender feminism. 3. By arguing that "equality is not enough", Greer reveals that she has remained loyal to Second Wave gender feminism, the ancestor of the entire Third Wave. In the 1980s and 90s, Greer made statements in her books that cast doubt on her commitment to hard line gender feminism. Those doubts, apparently, have been put to rest.

I love this woman!!! Interesting point and harsh reality - not sure if this is just in Australia, or also UK & America, but being married to someone you have kids with - and then the husband goes trans, changes his name, passport, etc. and that completely annullifies the marriage meaning it never existed - so the wife is dumped, on the streets, and the children are bastardised. WOW. I didn't think about it, but that's horrible!.
