Bismarck unified us, gave us many great reforms and refused the idea of colonies. He was more of a father to Germany than any Kaiser had been
@devolthor76112 жыл бұрын
In the beginning, he refused colonies. But then, from 1878 till 1884 he changed his opinion (maybe because of corruption or something, because he did it for companies) and started the 3rd biggest colonial empire of that time.

Depends on how you see it. Throughout his entire political career Bismarck was an absolute genius. But when you look at his career as chancellor of the German Empire, you‘ll soon notice that he wasn‘t the best in his later years. Some examples: - He banned the immensely popular SPD only to unban sometime later after immense protests. - He unnecessarily escalated the so called „Kulturkampf“ between Catholics and Protestants. - He was very sceptical of railways and tried to block the construction of railways into Berlin In the late 1870s, his government was referred to as “Kanzlerdiktatur” (Chancellor dictatorship) and many called for him to step back. Many Germans think that he wasn’t the best chancellor but that it either was Helmut Schmidt or Willy Brandt. Both worked for European peace (the latter winning the Nobel Peace Prize in the process) and ensured West-Germany’s position as a European power. The popularity of these two politicians is something people like Trump, Biden, Bolsonaro, Orban, Merkel, Putin, Xi Jingping, Macron or any major politician nowadays can only dream of. Here’s a nice clip showing Schmidt’s charisma: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml6cZ3h7mLlseLM Willy Brandt‘s infamous kneefall in Warsaw, the turning point in how the world viewed Germany: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bavUdYZ3brN9g5Y

3:07 Helmut Schmidt (HS): ("We are called upon to assist the state authorities wherever possible for the individual"). 1945, Germany lies in ruins. The nation needs young, energetic people to build a democratic state. One of them is someone who will shape this republic politically like no other: Helmut Schmidt. (HS: "I actually marched to the SPD almost straight from the prisoner-of-war camp"). 1962, a flood of the century inundates Hamburg. Interior Senator Helmut Schmidt does not hesitate for a second to take crisis management into his own hands (HS: "I thought it could cost us up to 10,000 deaths"). The brilliant crisis manager feels committed to the national interest and wants to help shape the recovery of the Federal Republic - first as Minister of Defense, then as Minister of Finance. After Willy Brandt's resignation, Schmidt takes the helm in Bonn and becomes the highly respected Chancellor of the Federal Republic. In economically and socially difficult times, he succeeds in giving the Germans new orientation, new values and new leadership. With his uncompromising, upright stance, he opposes those who fight the state (HS television address: "Terrorism has no chance in the long term!"). When employer president Hans-Martin Schleyer is kidnapped and a Lufthansa plane is hijacked, Schmidt decides after careful consideration: "The LEGAL STATE CANNOT BE OVERTHROWN!" (HS: "In favor of the people who would otherwise have become victims of the next crime and the one after that.") With its policy of reconciliation and its tireless commitment to peace and justice, Germany achieves a prominent role in the international community (HS: "It was in the interests of my people that we did not accept this SS-20 armament without further ado"). (Henry Kissinger, USA: "Helmut Schmidt was the first chancellor to position Germany on global issues"). (Giscard de Estaigne, France: "The first time that a German statesman was treated as one of the four greats of the world"). After the end of the social-liberal coalition, Helmut Schmidt withdraws from day-to-day politics - but the people remain loyal to him. (HS: "I wasn't interested in power, I was interested in public recognition"). As co-editor of the weekly newspaper "DIE ZEIT" and successful author, he remains the political and moral conscience of the nation. With his beloved wife "Loki", he is even on the bestseller lists at the same time - but in October 2010, after 68 years of marriage, he sadly has to say goodbye to his childhood sweetheart. (HS: "I am quite happy that my wife and I have both grown older than Konrad Adenauer"). Although he no longer held political office after 1986, he went down in world history as Germany's most popular politician - a statesman for the rest of his life. A role model for young and old. Germany owes him a great deal. In memory of former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt (1918-2015).
