When you asked the waiter what their most authentic Chinese food was and he couldn't respond (5:48) 😂😂 Western versions of Chinese food are totally valid though! They have to make food from home using foreign ingredients. The result was that Westerners started to expect those specific meals as part of that cuisine. It looked tasty, thanks for sharing! Cheers to the couple ❤️❤️❤️

It's so interesting how chinese cuisine has evolved globally. I grew up in Australia and I always ate chinese food from this restaurant near my house. Growing up I always thought it was 'westernised food', especially when more northern/ western Chinese restaurants started to come to Australia. However, I just moved to Hong Kong and the food here is identical to the chinese food that I grew up with! The owners must have come from Hong Kong! Now I'm living my dream, eating my childhood friday night treat every day hahaha.

Down to the different ‘waves’ of Chinese immigration, I think. The earliest were Cantonese or Fujianese or generally from the southern coastal regions so they became the pioneering/dominant regional cuisine in the West. Later immigrants came from more northerly and inland provinces and the food has changed accordingly. That’s my sense of it anyway!

Emden was once a city-state under the protection of the Dutch after the Emden Revolution in 1595. It was annexed by Prussia in 1744. Emden is a part of the historical region of East Frisia, the region was historically home to Frisians. The Frisian languages are the closest living language group to the Anglic languages (English and Scots, not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic). Old English is quite similar to Old Frisian. The two groups make up the Anglo-Frisian languages group and together with the Low German dialects these form the North Sea Germanic languages. However, modern English and Frisian are not mutually intelligible due to hundreds of years of Dutch influence on Frisian. Chupa Chups was founded in Barcelona, Spain by Enric Bernat in 1958. The name of the brand comes from the Spanish verb chupar, meaning "to suck". The Chupa Chups logo was designed in 1969 by the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. And for those who don't know, fortune cookies aren't Chinese, they're Japanese! In Edo-period Japan, cookies very similar to the modern fortune cookie were made called the 辻占煎餅/tsujiura senbei. They were made with miso and sesame, different than the modern ones. But like the modern ones, it had fortunes inside called tsujiura or omikuji. It switched to a Chinese-American staple during WWII because of Japanese internment which gave an opportunity for Chinese manufacturers to pick it up.

As a Chinese and lived in Germany for a bit over 10 years, I use to own a restaurant like these. They called Chinesisch Mongolisch restaurant there. Because at evening buffet they have a tippan grill which they charge a bit more, with larger selection of food. Funny thing about the kids price is in the pas we (most restaurant) charge kids until age 12. 13 and above its adult price so allot of parents use to ly about their kids age. So later we adapt to charge a price per age.

I'm Dutch, and we have restaurants called 'wokrestaurants' very similar to this. the sushi, the chocolate fountain, the fried goods. only big difference which makes it even more unique is that they add two (or 3?) more kitchens to the equation: indonesian (javanese, molukkan) and surinamese which is a mix of indian foods, west african foods and Chinese foods. so next to the fake Chinese food and Japanese food you will find things like Chinese style nasi goreng and babi pangang, krupuk chips, lumpia and sometimes even Surinamese roti.

Exactly! Plus, all the meat is deep fried and covered with thick sauce. I'm not sure where most "Western Chinese food" comes from. Where I live near San Francisco, I think the Chinese food is just very influenced by the fact there's a deep-rooted hisotyr of immigration from Cantonese-speaking regions of China, where they like their things sweet. Southern-based foods are also commonly thought to be more marketable and presentable than northern foods, so it feels like the Chinese food here doesn't even remotely resemble the food we get at home. To be fair, we have plenty of restaurants that I presume are authentic, but rarely one that focuses on northern Chinese cuisine. We've found a couple of dumpling houses, and that's it.

I used to work in an Asian fusion restaurant in the Netherlands right on the border with Germany and whenever a table ordered a lot of duck the kitchen would immediately know the table was German. Also, Chinese buffets here tend to be similar as in Germany except they will usually have a raw foods section that you hand over to a wok chef or a teppanyaki chef. The food usually is more on the salty side because it makes you drink more and usually the all you can eat price only includes the food, so drinks is what they make the most money on

Ah yes, samosas, Chupa Chups, cheesecake, sangria, sushi, fried calamari....quite the authentic Chinese experience 😂. Like, are they trying to stuff the whole UN into this Chinese-German buffet lol? But I don't blame Germans for loving their buffets! Reminds me of the Pennsylvania Dutch buffets around Lancaster County in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Dutch mostly descend from the Palatinate region of Germany (though the Amish came from Switzerland), and settled in Pennsylvania during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Pennsylvania Dutch were the ones that introduced funnel cake to the US, they brought drechderkuche to the US around 1879, developed a baking powder version, and this became funnel cake! The ironic thing about the Tsingtao Beer being at this buffet is that it was founded when the Germans had the Kiautschou Bay Leased Territory, so even that is not the most Chinese thing at this buffet since it's just Germans enjoying their Chinese legacy! And yeah, Asian restaurants in Europe and the Americas are more on the fusion side. Like on the East Coast of the US, Japanese sushi and hibachi restaurants are mostly owned by Chinese and Korean-Americans because most Japanese-Americans live just on the West Coast and for Chinese-Americans, there is a lot of competition between Chinese restaurants so families have opted for sushi and hibachi to charge for high-quality.

its totally true that chinese restuarants adapts to the enviroment its in. here in the netherlands historically it was usually chinese-indonesian, because we have a large group of indonesian immigrants or indos (dutch indonesian descendants from the dutch indies times) so either it was chinese immigrants embracing the asian culture the dutch were already used to, or chinese-indonesian families already having a mixed culture. it was neither truly indonesian or truly chinese, so it was always a little bit different from what i was used to from my own indonesian family. (my dad once told me that he could always ask the owner of a chinese resturant for a real dish, and he would get something more authentic than what the resturant actually served) nowadays more and more authentic places pop up, but they are mostly concentrated in the bigger cities...

"exotic" for my classmates who werent really used to that AT ALL. only me and one of my teacher ate them with the same class i also went to a wok resturant in that city, which everyone quite enjoyed but i never had any asian food so "un-asian" before, so i just went to get some chips afterwards.

This is also the case for Belgium, where Babi pangang is on the menu in a lot of Chinese restaurants. Which is the Indonesian name for (grilled/deep fried pork belly ).

As a German, I find this video very funny 😂 That‘s basically what you can find in every all you can eat restaurants here HAHAH. I didn’t know it was so different from other western „Chinese“ restaurants. But I don’t really like it anymore ever since I got to know what real Chinese food is. Most of the time those restaurants also don’t have the best quality food… And it’s too expensive for that quality

Actually, this isn't bad at all considering your initial apprehension unsurprisingly, and it has got a fairly decent choice as well. Here in the UK big buffet style Chinese restaurants are less common than say in North America or even like here in Germany.

I hosted a German exchange student back in the day, and when we got the info packet about her, we couldn’t make heads or tails of the four consecutive consonants in her last name (“nftl”). Turned out her last name was a compound word of “Senf” and “leben,” with a t to connect them. Literally means “a mustard life.” That is the most German thing I have ever heard in my entire leben

I'm guessing it might also be a variation on "sanft"-- "a gentle life" or "an easy life". if you go back a few hundred years, German had very inconsistent spelling.

Most chinese restaurants are actually more like asian restaurants, and really, the same is true for most other countries aswell. You might have some variation in the menu between, say, a chinese and a korean restaurant, in so far as the latter even exist here, but generally, there's, if you will, a certain canon of foods that all asian restaurants have.

This was so funny to watch having grown up in Switzerland right at the border to Germany where we used to go to an all you can eat Chinese restaurant very frequently and it was almost exactly the same :D I do love the food they have even though I have had slightly more proper Chinese food when I lived in NYC. But I have yet to make it to China to try the real stuff myself :) Just a little worried about the vegetarian options although I do see quite a bit in your videos, so maybe by the time I can go myself, there will be more options :)

Chinese food is Chinese food anywhere! A lot of the early Chinese restaurants were opened by Cantonese people and some of their dishes were Cantonese version of other food, such as Sweet and Sour Pork being the Cantonese version of Guo Bao Ruo using different ingredients, so Chinese food is naturally already fusional. Same thing with Beijing Duck! It wasn't a thing until southerners brought it up to Beijing. For those who argue that these versions would never be considered Chinese, well Rice wasn't the staple grain in China until the Song Dynasty. Same with Tea.

I have to definitely point out that there are also Chinese restaurants that do it differently. for example I live in Munich and in the (I guess you could call it ) suburbs of the town, there is a Chinese restaurant called Long, which does not have an all you can eat buffet, but it does have authentic Chinese food and What goes for Chinese food in Germany. they even make a distinction between them by having them either in different sections of the menu or in different menu books altogether.so if you’re going to a Chinese restaurant because you want that Westernised version of Chinese food , they have that tasting very good, but if you want some authentic Chinese food from the area they come from ( I unfortunately always forget which one that is) they also have that. Though I do know that all over Germany, you will find restaurants like that. The all you can eat Chinese ones I’ve been to , are at least trying to be a little bit more authentic than the one you went to, although I am quite certain especially after watching your videos that they just look and sound more authentic than the ones you had in this restaurant. At least they don’t offer sangria and fried calamari . If you’re ever back in close proximity to uni, do give me a shout out, I would very much love to show you my favourite Chinese restaurant

There are two types of Chinese restaurants in the west - those which cater for the westerners, and those which cater largely for the Chinese. The latter are sometimes more authentic if they can get the ingredients.

I think there can be a comparison between the Chinese food of the past and the Chinese food of today.😊

This restaurant reminded me of the famous chain restaurant in Canada called The Mandarin. There's pizza, roast carving station, sushi, fries, along with "westernized Chinese food" which is a misnomer. I'll get noodles and sweet and sour soup from the buffet and depending on how I'm feeling might go to the ice cream bar or dessert bar where they sell everything from doughnuts to nanaimo bars but I'll get walnut cookies and maybe a very sweet slice of a nanaimo bar. It's nothing like the Chinese food I was introduced to in Toronto by my co-worker from Hong Kong. Happy belated New Year to you Amy and Derk. I have caught COVID and tested positive on December 31st so no celebrating for me. I thought I was over it until yesterday when it came back to ruin my plans 😂

19.5 euro is quite cheap! We have a very similar "asian fusion" buffet in Cambridge, England, it's 24 pounds on weekdays, around 26 pounds on weekends, not including drinks. Or you can go for lunch for 15-17 pounds but they don't have many of the dinner stations like chocolate fountains, sushi, or grilled food.😢
