In this video we're looking at some old houses in Russia built by prisoners of war in the 1940s. Also a Russian wooden house nicknamed 'gingerhouse' built in 1880s. And visit to a chocolate store to make a perfect day:) #RussianVlogs #LifeinRussia #urbanexploring

My grandfather was a cabinetmaker, so I can really appreciate the ornate woodwork trim on the traditional Russian houses. The Soviet-style apartment block reminded me of the old projects (housing for lower-income people) in Chicago; Google "Cabrini Green" to see what I mean. The Maria chocolate shop looks delightful. I like how friendly and enthusiastic the shop clerk was; she took real pride in the merchandise.

The building with many doors is really a building with storage rooms and with cellars (as we call it "погреб"). There is a district here in Volgograd called Angarsky, many years ago it used to be a settlement near the city, there are two-stored houses there with only 2 apartments on one floor, 4 apartments in one part of an apartment block. And every apartment has its own piece of land with a garden and such a storage room with a cellar. People live in the city and like in the countryside at the same time 😊

German built houses are cute, with the steep gable roofs, fascia and soffits wrap around the gable ends, the semi-circle balconies and wrought iron balusters, they're German fairy tale homes. Gingerbread house is amazing, the domed roofs, incredible wood work required craftsmanship, artistic talent and a lot of work to build. Maria has a nice building too. What a place, every in there is delicious, and I'll bet the coffee is excellent too. Thanks for the video, it's good to see Russia.
