In the 1750s, Benjamin Franklin expressed concerns about German immigrants in the Thirteen Colonies, highlighting their potential impact on English culture and language. Franklin believed that Pennsylvania, founded by the English, should not become a "colony of aliens" who would resist assimilation into English customs. His writings reflected a desire to preserve English dominance and cultural identity in the colonies. While Franklin's views were influenced by the context of the time, they shed light on the complexities of early American attitudes toward newcomers and the challenges of cultural assimilation.

Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

They became accepted when they mixed with caucasians and diluted their complexion. Your complexion is what was refererred to back then as "sallow". I think Franklin mentioning Germans and Swedes as "swarthy" was based on his observed reality (only he didn't realise why the reality was such): he knew no German or Swedish immigrants that were slave owners and/or from the upper classes; all German and Swedes he had encountered were rural labourers or small farmers working their own land - after years working on the fields, they were all tanned.

Absolutely! Classism is often mistaken for Racism. In every culture, even where most people share the same genetic makeup, people who are darker are frequently looked down upon, because they do physical labor outdoors. It's not Racism, it's Classism.

All racism is classism, as it's a socioeconomic construct. But a tan is not why Franklin called them swarthy. Lots of Northern European have olive undertones to their skin, they always have, even the blond and blue. People knew the difference between a suntan and naturally deeper complexion and coloring even in age of men wearing lead based court makeup to pale themselves out. Franklin knew what he was saying.

@@oliviakrause3336 Franklin didnt want the Anti-Slavery Germans to settle in US America. And Franklin was right. Its the majority of German settlers who fought slavery in the USA and fought for its Independence from Britain. Many US-Historians say that without the German settlers there probably would still be a form of slavery or forced labor in America. When Historians talk about the UNION, the absolute majority of the UNION was German. Andright after the USA gained its independence the British Empire started to attack the German Empire which they then sacked in 1806. The Germans then reestablished their Empire in 1870 and then Britain crushed it again. The German Empire re-established in 1933 and Britain crushed it again. Franklin did not want the Germans because of their Anti-Slavery Laws in Germany implemented by the Holy German Empire in 1220.

Here is the most funny thing about Franklin's comment: Fast forward a few years to the War of Independence, and the Pennsylvania Germans played a pivotal role in the defeat of the British. In fact, if it were not for the large number of PA Germans fighting in the Continental Army against the British, there would be no United States of America.

I am abt 25% German on my dad's side from the DNA. No Sub-Saharan African or Native American of any substantive amt at this time, but I think swarthy would describe my deceased dad and my adult son. The problem is that the English are descendants of Anglo Saxons, Jutes, and Frisians along with Britons, Danes, and Norman French. The English themselves were and are a mixed ethnic race. All of those cultures mixed and became the English ethnic group. It's reflected in English culture and Language. Ben Franklin was obviously uneducated about his own ancestry. That's the ironic part he was essentially being racist towards himself. Anglo Saxons, Frisians, Jutes, and Norse are technically Germanic tribes. The Norman French are a mixed ethnic group of Norse man and French. The French were another group Ben Franklin looked down upon. Again, being racist towards himself. Also, the Britons themselves, native Celtic tribes of Great Britain, were looked down upon. Irish Scottish and even Welsh. Our founding fathers didn't totally understand the history of their ancestors. The Saxons originally came from the region in Northern Germany, Southern Denmark called Schelswieg Holstein region. The Angels came from Northern Germany, Western Holland. The Jutes came from modern-day Denmark. The Frisians came from the Netherlands. The Norse came from Scandinavia. To go back even further before the Anglo Saxon days before the dark ages, Britian was again a mixed race culture of indeginious Celtic tribes and the Romans. The Roman Empire was a multi cultural society in itself. Roman soldiers garrisoned in Britain came from all over the Roman Empire. From Spain, North Africa, Greece, Italy the Middle East, Gaul, Turkey, parts of Yugoslavia clear to Germany. Those said groups did mix with the indigenous Britons. In a sense, you have an already multi cultural group mixing with Germanic tribes. So I agree that being white really isn't a thing. The reason is borders and language changed throughout Europe. There is no such thing as being pure whatever. Europe is a small continent with a harsh climate and limited resources. Different ethnic groups became subject to stronger ethnic groups. There was constant warfare because of limited resources.

So its false pride and ignorance that creates Racisism. Odd that they also think themselves superior yet don't remember who all they are. There are not many humans on the planet in different parts of the globe that has the narcissistic mentality as the Anglo Saxons of Europe. So all those mixing were not a good end result. Its the same as inbreeding. In this case, it affected their mind. The concept eludes them. The flaw with this breed is that it only recognizes and sees skin color on home sapiens. They have a mental disease that they are not even aware of. They are on a level of spectrum that will never be healed. Yes, insane people can also be intelligent, but insane none the less. Well, now that explains everything. If you hide behind the concept of white, you can appear normal.

Sometimes I think Franklin was more especially fond of rosy cheeked fair skinned people from NW Germany primarily (light brown, hazel, green and blue eyes all fine, blonde, red and brown hair all fine as well, but the skin color and facial shape, structure, also bodily smells, etc. should be Saxon primarily), but sometimes, I get the impression that Franklin wanted an especially godly, noble, angelic kind of European people here. I know about his beef with Samuel Keimer. I think this played into his thoughts about Germans a great deal, particularly the tendency toward extreme cultural conservativism, dogmatism (rigidity) and extreme thriftiness in Swabians, etc. The aversion to olive toned or tanned skin, black hair, etc. with some Alpine nationalities (Swiss, Austrians, Bavarians, Swabians, etc.) may have actually been secondary in intensity compared to his dislike of the German “psyche”-esp. the more severe, intense sorts of behaviors that he perceived in more Southern Germans. Whereas Franklin saw the Saxons in Northern Germany as being more calm and peaceable, like the English. Less “surly”, etc. (Heck, some of that can be attributed to diet. Northern Germans and the English have historically eaten more fish compared to Europeans further inland in the continent, like Southern Germans, who likely ate more pork and beef historically, etc. But again, that dogmatic narrow-minded whole deal with Franklin’s view of Southern Germans, that seems to factor in pretty heavily with Franklin’s outlook on Southern Germans, Swiss, Austrians, etc. I imagine that Northern Italians are similar, Hungarians, Czechs, etc. (in Franklin’s view).

In reading the comments, there seems to be some confusion in what "German" people Franklin was concerned about. Prior to the American independence, there was a large influx of German speaking people from the Palatinate Region of Europe. Most settled in Pennsylvania because unlike the other colonies, William Penn was accepting of them, as he considered them excellent farmers and an asset to his colony. The Palatinate Region consisted of an extended area along the Rhine River that included areas that are now in Southwestern Germany, Eastern France, and parts of Switzerland. All these people were German speaking, but not all of them were from what is now Germany. I will add that the Amish, which Pennsylvania is famous for, actually originated in Switzerland and many people who ancestors were "Pennsylvania German" when they take a DNA test and trace their ancestry back to Europe, are often surprised to learn their ancestors actually came from Eastern France.

I'm afraid this exemplifies the sense of racial superiority the English have towards other Europeans, let alone those from outside Europe. This is very interesting! I am German, and working on my families genealogy. By that I came over tons of ancestors who went to the US. Big numbers of early immigrants came from southern Germany, Württemberg, where more people are of darker skin- and haircolor. There is even a history of expelling poor village people, selling them to the US. (German history of immigration is quite complex, linked to political matters, Germany not being one country til 1871. Being German before that mainly meant, being from a state where german was spoken.)

My adopted sibling is Finnish. The Finns' language is completely different from the Scandinavians. Their traditional culture and spirituality was based on nature and animals, similar to First Nations cultures in North America, not the stories about Thor and Odin and all those guys from Marvel (ha ha). One theory is that they came from Indigenous tribes in Asia, i.e. Siberia, who travelled and intermarried with northern European people and eventually became the Finns. There are also Indigenous Sámi people in the Nordic countries who were mistreated and had their drums burned, and were forced to assimilate or be killed, and other horrible stuff. Today, a lot of people consider them "white", but if you look at pictures of them from a hundred years ago, many of them look almost identical to First Nations people in Canada and the U.S. Another theory is that they also originated in Asia and migrated to northern Europe and became reindeer herders. I've read people from parts of Europe say they aren't as hung up on the concept of "race" as some other countries are so insistent needs to be the lens, and don't give a rat's butt about classifying everyone into a color block. So like you, I agree that white does not seem to be an actual thing. I didn't realize Ben Franklin was such a jerk, but since people are complex, it's interesting he's one of the few founding fathers to free his slaves, because he apparently realized they weren't inferior to him. I'm not sure of the timelines of his feelings on all that. But great video, you have so much good stuff, and so many true stories to learn from.

Hi Danielle! Thanks for the video! Just wanted to throw a quick thought/ question out there as well about the German immigrants in the 1800s. My ancestor came from Germany in 1750 but with a Spanish/ Italian name. Through DNA testing ydna, we found out that particular side of my family were Sephardic Jews. I have a distant relative who is a Genealogy teacher that seems to think they were Sephardic in the 1600s in Germany but then started to integrate into German society etc. Some people believe they may have even been crypto Jews in America because of patterns of intermarriage within a small community and the fact that one of their descendants knew he was Jewish but would not/ did not tell why he didn't reveal that. Anyways, my hypothesis is that Europe is a big mix of many ethnicities and just because you are a German national doesn't make you an ethnic German. In fact, the Jewish people were under much pressure in Europe at that time and I wouldn't be surprised if other " German immigrants could be Jewish. Any thoughts?

I think you are absolutely. It was just a few years ago that I found out my Oma (German for Grandmother) was of mixed race. I always said she looked Jewish, apparently, my great-grandmother married a German Jew. it wasn't until I looked on the European map where I was born, that I saw how close I was to France and Switzerland. I always remember my mother talking about my oldest Aunt going to France to visit relatives. My mother also mentioned how they would visit family in Switzerland as well. My mother very blond but one of my aunts had dark hair and green eyes. As I got older it sparked something in me to know more about my homeland and history of the Germans. When we came the states in the early 1960's the trend was that you come here, and you assimilate. You learn the language and customs; my sister who was of school age had to learn English before she could start school which put her behind by a year. Today, there is no assimilation. I believe we have to many immigrants coming in illegally and it will reunion our economy as a nation; we can't sustain this. In history, and on television, they tried to make the Germans look like they were dumb but they were a long way from it. The Germans infiltrated the USA through project paperclip. The Americans brought many over that should have gone through the Nuremburg Trial to be hanged. Instead, the Germans were given good jobs and a new identity.

"just because you are a German national doesn't make you an ethnic German" -- That is actually kind of wrong. Would you say there is such a thing as ethnic (US) Americans, and just because you are an American national doesn't make you an ethnic American? I hope the thought makes you uncomfortable, as it's the kind of thought that tries to exclude people who have papers to show that they belong, fit in culturally, and have nowhere else to go. That's not just true for America, it's true everywhere. I have an uncle who, by an accident of nature, looks very Japanese even though we have no Japanese ancestry in our family, only a little French. Of course he is an ethnic German anyway. But the same is true for any German citizen with exclusively Japanese, or African, ancestry who grows up in Germany, speaking only German in their family. Ethnicity is about culture, not genes. There is just a major statistic correlation with genes that can suggest, but not prove, someone's ethnicity. If you think this makes no sense because it means that all those ethnic Germans, ethnic Italians, ethnic Irish etc. in the US _aren't_ -- well, that's because they really aren't. If you don't speak the language of an ethnicity and don't fit into its society because you have totally different values and have never lived there, then you are not part of it. In America the concept of ethnicity, as it relates to the immigrants' countries of origin, diverged from the original concept.

They could be jewish without knowing it. My mother's DNA-Test came back with 13%Sephard. I did her family tree and during the 18th century I found several women that had no catholic paper trail before their showing up as wives at birthing kids, but without having added birth-family-names, like the other women. I came across an article that during the counterreformation children were seized from non-catholic families to be monastry raised. And these kidnapping-victims weren't just protestants, as it was general knowledge, but also Jews, Muslims and Sinti&Rom. Those monastery-raised girls obviously were part of a marriage-brokering for widowed farmers with many kids. I also found hints of 'crypto-jews' - mainly inkeeps but also travelling tradesmen, stone-masons, river-boat-men and musicians with names that were just their job-description or a colour, and that had a rather odd marriage pattern with getting wives from unusual long distance that would need professional marriage brokering and the families of the wives - or their mothers - often having romanic family-names.

An ethnic German from somewhere along the Rhine River would be unlikely to speak English. French, Dutch, Italian, or a local Slavic language would be far more likely as a second language for them. Their clothes would be strange, foreign, and travel worn. They may have pawned nearly everything they had just to get there. Franklin's own French was not of the highest quality. So interesting that German people are more homogenous than British people who later became Americans through their independence from British rule. The British historically are a mix of different Native Celtic peoples, Roman invaders who later made part of Britain part of the Romam Empire. Later after Rome's fall, Germanic tribes (Anglo Saxons, from modern day Germany, Jutes from modern Denmark), Viking Raiders from Norway/Sweden, all a mixture of different groups of people added to the mixture of present day British people. the English language itself is not a "pure" language but a mixture of different languages brought over by the different invading groups.

It's funny how people mention angles from Denmark and Saxons from Germany.This is complete spurious, because Saxony did not exist until the 8th century(An and even that was different from the modern Saxony), Denmark did not exist until the 10th century.Those people that came over in the 5th century, when in that landmass that in the future would become Denmark and Saxony, were as much English as they were German, because these terms meant nothing until generations after they were 1st attributed to the people, who then would then begin to get an embedded identity in reference to the terms aand other people similarly identifying. Those people coming over weren't or Danish in anyway whatsoever.Then a couple of generations after they moved in Britain annd mixed with the indigenous they became something else entirely.

As a German, I am not shocked by this. I _was_ shocked when I first learned that the Irish were once not considered white. That's just ridiculous if you assume it's really about skin color as the term 'white' suggests. The idea that most Germans are blond and have blue eyes, or that we all have _particularly_ light skin is ridiculous. Our language came from Scandinavia, but only a small part of our genes. The Nazis even had an insane breeding program to make Germans Nordic, but on average we never actually were. (Look for "Lebensborn" if you want to know more.) Germany has always been a melting pot right in the center of Europe, although we also have significant internal diversity even today. (I am sure I could easily tell whether a crowd of people wearing neutral clothing is from the North, the South-West or the South-East.) We have roughly equal proportions of the three major groups that make up Europeans: (Western) Hunter-Gatherers, Early European Farmers, and Indo-Europeans. At least since we were colonized by the Romans 2000 years ago, we have had a strong connection to Italy, which is far enough in the south for people to have a relatively dark, Mediterranean/Middle Eastern complexion. I think most Germans who moved to America were farm workers, so they were tanned from working outside all day. A conspicuous subgroup were the Amish and Mennonite people from Switzerland who had first been welcomed in South-West Germany, but had got into conflict with the authorities there as well due to their extreme religiosity and complete rejection of military service. They sought to lead a life just like people in the Bible and rejected any technologies that might get into the way. Some still reject electricity in their homes today; of course Franklin had no sympathy for them. Franklin's concept of 'white' here seems to be based on a distinction between 'worthy to be a citizen' and 'potential slave material'. This particular form of racism arises in a race-based slavery system. Europe profited from such a system, but essentially never had it on the continent itself. This is why racism in Europe is different than in the US. There was never a need to tell at a glance whether someone is a slave. In particular, when people are obviously 'mixed race' or from a 'race' that looks very European, such as many native Americans, most of us here in Europe genuinely don't see them as belonging to another 'race' at all.
@johaquila

@@Momoa786 Look at a photo of Adolf Hitler, for example, and think about how 'Germanic' he looks. He was Austrian, but that's essentially the same as South-East German (Bavarian), and he came from a border town anyway. (Hitler is a popular example for this because it demonstrates how silly the Nazi 'Aryan' concept was that a lot of people still take seriously.) You seem to be mistaking 'Germanic' for a 'race' or something that people have in their DNA. But in reality it is a culture. Germans in the North, and Dutch people even more, on average look a lot like Scandinavian and Baltic people. They may have got it from Scandinavians who brought their genes along with their language, or it may have been there before as they were related to the Balts. Most likely both. But in the more populous South that's not true. Here most people look more like French people or people in and beyond the Alps. If you look at genetic distribution maps for traces of the various prehistoric populations such as Western Hunter-Gatherers, Early European Farmers, Western Steppe Herders and many others, you will see that for most of them, Germany is not homogeneous. Almost all are noticeably more common at one end than at the other. Scandinavia and the Baltics are particularly associated with Western Hunter-Gatherers. The corresponding genes, some of which seem to be responsible for typical 'Scandinavian' features, make up about a third of the Genes of North Germans, and a fourth of South Germans. This difference is significant. It means that these features are noticeable in slightly over half of North Germans, but too diluted to be noticeable in most South Germans.

Hi! How are you? Benjamin’s grip of English ethnicity and history was at best tenuous. The English and the Germans share many common historical and cultural ties. For example, English comes from German, eg words such as house and mouse. English ethnicity is as mixed as any other group. I wonder if Benjamin would have levelled such a critiques in his monarch’s, King George’s court, or he would have lacked the courage, since Augusta Princess of Wales, mother of King George III, was German. Methinks that Benjamin ate too many sour apples. What a lovely, informative video.🙏🏽

Fascinating that Germans came in and made their own communities. It's similar to what today's Spanish speaking communities do today. And I've always thought that wasn't necessarily a good idea. But in fact, over time, that the Germans did this benefitted us. The way you tell the story leads me to believe that there was a population boom in the colonies or early US during that time, and so they felt confident that they were superior. Especially if they had slave labor sadly, but wanting to give credit where credit is due.

American culture, customs and cuisine didn't come from just England. America got their culture from other countries, other cultures. Keeping a decorated tree in your home on Christmas is a German or Scandinavian pagan tradition that predates the Scandinavian and German people's conversion to Christianity. The custom of decorating eggs on Easter originated in Eastern Europe. Carving a jack-o-lantern on Halloween is an Irish custom from Ireland. Laying a wreath on Christmas is an tradition that originated in Ancient Greece. Hamburgers and hotdogs, a traditional American food, originated in Germany. Pizza and spaghetti, that Americans are fond of, are from Italy. French fries were thought to come from Belgium or France. Italians, Germans, Irish and other immigrants didn't leave their culture behind in their homelands. They brought their culture along to America. America is a multicultural melting pot of various cultures.

The way the english and other brits discriminated people of color and even other europeans has nothing to do with the way the Spanish discriminated the different peoples living on their realms. The English backed up their racial hatred using scientific racism as the source of logical evidence to justify their wrongdoings, scientific racism was very popular a couple of centuries ago in european countries were the Illustration was also popular (especially amongst protestants) and one of its most nefarious consequences until today was the development of eugenics. The Spanish and the Portuguese never used scientific racism and other racial ideas derived from the illustration period as a framework to discriminate against anyone. In the territories controlled by Spain and Portugal you were discriminated against if you were not a catholic, if you were not loyal to the reigning monarch and if you were not part of the nobility or related to the high spheres of political, and/or religious and economical powers. A descendant of nahuatl or incan nobles had way more power and influence than a peninsular spanish peasant or commmoner, even if said noble had clear native facial features and the spaniard was "white", even enslaved people could obtain freedom if they paid for it, guess were the family of the last Inca lives today? Perú? wrong, Spain!, The caste system you speak of better describes the situation in India or South Africa, or New Zealand or Canada, or Australia or the USA before the abolition of slavery, racial segregation/apartheid and the anti-interracial marriage laws were deemed illegal during the 20th century, meanwhile the Spanish and the Portuguese had legalized interracial marriages centuries ago. Also, the Spanish were not colonizers and they never had colonies since they didn't replace the original native populations with their own, they intermarried the natives since the very start, creating a mixed population that's still the majority on most hispanic countries, unlike the countries that used to be part of the english crown, plus the new territories that were conquered (not colonized) were integrated as independent viceroyalties and captaincies inside the Spanish empire and were governed over exactly the same as the provinces back in the peninsula, Portugal had coastal factories and later on large plantations that resemble an anglo colony but they're still pretty different in any other aspect. Spain and Portugal have always been different from england/the uk, why do you expect the 3 of them to do everything even remotely similarly just becaurse they use to have empires? Literally their only similarities apart from that are the continent they are located on, being christians (catholics and most protestants are pretty different theologically) and hating the French, nothing more nothing else.
@liveandinstereo
@liveandinstereo Жыл бұрын
We'll yeah. That's the whole "black legend" that the Anglo world created against Spain. In some way, the propaganda is understandable, it began during their greatest rivalry. But yeah, the Spanish had no issues marrying natives. The caste system was real but, with time, became less relevant. Evidence of this were the natives with titles of nobility. In the case of Peru, specifically, the noble Incas had the royal scepter and had the power to speak for the King of Spain, something that the Spanish colonizers themselves did not have. It's all history and all public knowledge. You just gotta get into the books.

Neither of these men from the 19th century were black - see their photographs. The author of the video has used a mishmash of irrelevant evidence and is targeting the gullible. The Vikings used hair colour as a descriptor, this can be seen in names such as Halfdan the Black, Eric the Red and Harald Fairhead. Charles II was called 'the black boy' by his own mother as he was the only child with black hair and dark eyes - this is evident in the painting of Charles and his siblings by Anthony van Dyck. Charles II's brother James II (same parents) was never described as black - which completely gives the game away for people with a balanced mind. There were plenty of white people described by colours, German Footballer Ulf Kirsten was knicknamed der schwatte (or the black one), British PM John Major was known as the grey man and boxer Jack Dempsey was known as kid blackie. The Campbells of Glenorchy had a black Duncan in their family tree, and they also had a grey Colin - which is a clear indication they were referring to hair colour and not skin colour. There were plenty of white people described by colours, German footballer Ulf Kirsten was nicknamed der schwatte (or the black one), British PM John Major was known as the grey man and boxer Jack Dempsey was known as kid blackie. On the one hand, The Founding Fathers were seriously thinking of making German our national language. On the other hand, you might well ask "German? Which one?" since Hochdeutsch and Plattdeutsch are almost separate languages, and much the same can be said for the existence of Italian, Arabic, Japanese (my daughter spoke relatively fluent Tokyo Japanese, but couldn't understand a word at the Osaka table at U of Texas at Austin). As for "swarthy" Germans I give you the quote by Bismarck: "A Bavarian is a combjnation of an Austrian and a human being."

Not quite, Bismarck's remark (if it's genuine, there are other unoffending versions) needs to be interpreted in the context of the long standing feud between Prussia (Bismarck), Bavaria and especially Austria. Austria is the only "German" state that has resisted the unification. This has nothing to do with swarthiness.
@robertjohnson5838
@robertjohnson5838 Жыл бұрын
@@fietereim8190 I'd say that when you go south from Prussia and Bavaria is next, and then you get to Austria, swarthiness is probably party of the deal. I've talked to Italian-Swiss and Austrians on this topic going the other way: "Why is West Germany the luckiest nation? Because they don't have West German tourists!" The Austrian lady I knew had been a waitress in a remote town in Austria, and when the bill was presented in Schillings, the West German woman said "No, how much in REAL money?" (meaning Deutschmarks as if Schillings were cowries or wampum or Yap stone money).

@@robertjohnson5838 Take it as you want, but as a German myself I am not aware of this swarthiness categorization you allude to. We generally "discriminate" by dialect and Bavarian and Austrian aren't the most detested ones. Granted, there is some uppityness towards Austria, but this stems from the difference in size (83 vs. 9M people). And even if German tourists make asses of themselves, it doesn't mean that Schillings were real money. 😂

In the main this is typical xenophobic exclusion that we see time and again with most outgroups. However, I had some ancestors come here from Germany in colonial times that were quite dark. My great grandfather William Issaac Moak had the last name on his death certificate changed to Munk. On his deathbed he told my dad and I the story of his father saving a dark-skinned man from a Mississippi lynch mob. Grandad said his father spoke with the man in a language that was not the little German he knew. His father then told the mob that this was a black German from the Black Forest. He convinced the mob this dark man was fully European and should not be hung for refusing to say yassah and nossah. The dark man-surnamed Munk-came home with them and preformed a challenging blacksmith job overnight. It was some wagon part that was really hard to repair-days of work for Grandad's father and at the limit of his smithing ability. Grandad was outraged to find this man had also walked away with his father's lightest anvil and some other choice items. His father told him the man was kin-Moak was originally Munk- and not to worry about it. Grandad said these black German's had been enslaved in Europe but were not African. The Romani and Sinti arrived in Germany in the 1500's I believe. The name Munk turned up again when I attended NC State. The Cloud family history had John Cloud's Paternal line way back into England but mother's maiden name unknown. Well, the residents of New Light Creek N.C.-birthplace of John Cloud and that Boone guy-were happy to tell me about a letter found between some Clouds. It mentioned "our undying shame that our mother was born under the accursed name of Munk". They were also happy to tell me these Munks were not exactly white too. I reacted rather poorly to this racist attitude but fortunately avoided academic and legal penalties.

No it doesn't. Walt Whitman described himself as having a 'swarthy face' in Leaves of Grass, and he had numerous photographs taken of him - he was of English lineage. Bellow is a description of Napoleon Bonaparte. Notice that the description of him includes 'reddish-blonde' hair, an aquiline nose and that of him being 'swarthy'. Dennis Davidov's description (from his Memoirs) of Napoleon at Tilsit in 1807: 'I have already remarked on how much I was struck by the overall resemblance of Napoleon to the prints on sale everywhere. But the same was not true of his facial features. None of the portraits that I had seen bore the least resemblance to him. Believing them, I had supposed that Napoleon sported a rather large hooked nose, dark eyes and dark hair- in a word, the true Italian facial type. In fact, his face was slightly swarthy, with regular features. His nose was not very large, but straight, with a very slight, hardly noticeable bend. The hair on his head was not black, but dark reddish-blond; his eyebrows and eyelashes were much darker than the colour of his hair, and his blue eyes, set off by the almost black lashes, gave him a most pleasing expression. Finally, no matter how many times I had occasion to see him, I never noticed those frowning eyebrows with which the portrait-pamphleteers endowed him'. Swarthy does not mean that somebody was black. It was to describe caucasions with darker features such as hair/eyes and tanned skin.

@@idratherbeaphilthanajustin9533Etymology Dictionary: Entries linking to swarthy swart (adj.) Old English sweart "black, dark," of night, clouds, also figurative, "wicked, infamous," from Proto-Germanic *swarta- (source also of Old Frisian, Old Saxon, and Middle Dutch swart, Dutch zwart, Old Norse svartr, German schwarz, Gothic swarts "dark-coloured, black"), from PIE root *swordo- "dirty, dark, black" (source of sordid). The true Germanic word, surviving in the Continental languages but displaced in English by black. Of skin colour of persons from late 14c. Related: Swartest. schvartze (n.) also schvartzer, "black person" (somewhat derogatory), 1961, Yiddish, from schvarts "black" (see swarthy). Perhaps originally a code word to refer to black servants when they were within earshot, as its German cognate, Schwarze, is said to have been used: In Baltimore in the 80s of the last century, the German-speaking householders, when they had occasion to speak of Negro servants in their presence, called them die Blaue (blues). In the 70s die Schwartze (blacks) had been used, but it was believed that the Negroes had fathomed it. [H.L. Mencken, "The American Language," Supplement I, 1945]

I’m thankful to get quotes from founding fathers depicting their psyche through their own words! I’m curious to learn their thoughts on other European immigrants besides Anglo Saxons who weren’t what they’d consider to be swathy. my front of mind conclusion about Franklin and his writings is that he felt threatened by the vastness of cultural difference within a European context between the formerly English Americans to the new German Americans and found the idea of forming alliances or relationships would end up too unpredictable and thus his remarks about whiteness is more mocking than it is literal. but then again, i dont know what swathy means. white is just a mode to exclude than it is a representation of other groups. but then again, fairer skin is revered by mainstream cultures outside of the european context also, like it is in Asia, literal paler skin, so Franklin could also really be commenting on their complexion. pardon me if Im off given the passages you shared in the video.

The founding fathers had somewhat varying views on race and nationality. We know more about Franklin in this regard than most of the others. If I am not mistaken, these are the thoughts that Benjamin Franklin had about Europeans (and a few others) at least: English: Amazing. Beautiful. Handsome. Spiritually minded. The best people. Scottish: Hmmm…. Not so sure about those highlanders, to be honest… Welsh: Yyyeah ok… Irish: Hmmm…. (Raises an eyebrow) France: Cultured but darker haired than the English… Dutch: Very fair, very beautiful people. Flemish: No problems there. Walloons: More French… Germans: -Bavarians: Yyyeah…. (Swiss/Austrians: same deal) -Swabians: Oy… -Hessians: Yeah, ok… -Rhinelanders: Pretty ok I guess… -Thuringians: Also pretty ok… -Saxons: YES! -Prussians: Hmmm… Danes: Yep, great people… Norwegians: Ya shure, you betcha Iceland: More Norway, shure, you betcha. Swedes: Not sure about your sometimes tanned skin, but I’m liking that blonde hair… Italians: Well… Spanish: Wait a minute… Portuguese: Now hold on a sec Hungarians: Now wait just a minute here… Czech: Franklin covers his face a bit in consternation Polish: They’re FINE! Look, can we get back to NW Europe a bit more here? Finland: More “Asiatics”… Baltic States: Yyyeah… Russia: Oh come on now! Ukraine: Can we stop this? Romania: Will this never end? Croatia: Look, if you stop this inquisition, I’ll… Greece: No! Just, No! Ok? Albania: … Slovenia: Why? Just…. Why? Serbia: Go talk to someone else about this… Bosnia: No! I’ve had enough! Moldova: Look. Aren’t they just more Slavs? Slovakia: (Frustrated sigh) Turkey: Wait! I’m drawing the line! Turks are not European! Israel: Wait. That’s not fair. I know what you are up to with that one. Me: “Now Ben, I know you love the English people and the Saxons in Germany as well. I do too. But I also love the Scots, Welsh, and Swiss/Southern Germans, etc., because they are a part of my ancestry. Can you be a little more tolerant of your fellow Europeans there, my man?” Franklin: (Sigh) “I guess so. But that Samuel Keimer! I don’t like him one little bit!!!” “Ok then, I understand. I promise that there are nice Southern Germans who are very intelligent, beautiful and righteous, spiritual, productive people.” Franklin: (Sigh…) Me: “Now we just need to work on how you feel about everyone else.” Franklin: “Just kill me now…”

Ironically, Franklin's Pennsylvania was not founded by the British, but taken by force from the Dutch, along with New York. In the early 18th Century the French were still engaged in wars among the Germanies (yes, it wasn't united until the late 19th Century). These religious wars created German refugees who sought refuge in Protestant England, who didn't want them except as a cheap labor source in the colonies, namely New York. Since the refugees couldn't afford passage they were given passage in exchange for indentured servitude. What the Germans thought was going to be a short term of work to pay off their passage was a lie. Governor Tyron built labor camps (forerunner of the British Concentration Camps of Boer War) and kept the Germans hard at work as slave labor for years. In 1719 the Germans had enough and they broke out of their camps seeking refuge on the frontier with the Native Americans. The Iroquois League told the Germans where they could set up their own towns and sold them the land, which infuriated Governor Tyron as they didn't have the right to sell their own lands which were claimed by the crown. This set up an environment where it was "Us vs. Them" with the British. It was to no surprise then that years later the Germans rallied to the revolutionary cause in New York while their English and Scottish neighbors were more Loyalist or lukewarm to the revolution. My German Immigrant 5th Great-Grandfather was a sergeant in the Tyron County Militia and led his men in battle with the Tories and Indians at the Battle for Sharon Springs (formerly known as New Durlach, one of these German towns). He, like the other Germans in his unit, earned their American Citizenship in blood lost and shed for freedom despite the feelings of Franklin, et al.
