The German parliament has been discussing proposals to prohibit the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Germany's domestic intelligence agency is monitoring the AfD due to concerns that it may pose a threat to democracy. While some factions within the party have been officially designated as far-right extremist, the AfD is expected to perform well in next month’s national elections. Opinion polls suggest it could emerge as the second-largest party in parliament. However, other parties have stated they will not enter a coalition with the AfD to form a government.

"Would banning the lead opposition party serve democracy?" The fact that this is even a question is insane. The issues that lead people to vote AfD aren't going to disappear by banning it.

@ You'd believe wrong. The party members, who were also members of the Sturmabteilung, were arrested following the 1923 attempted coup. The party itself was never banned or prevented from participating in the election. The Sturmabteilung, the paramilitary wing of the party was banned for a short period and then again permitted. Democracy is the most abused word in modern history, democracy today is just an illusion! Our rulers want us to believe that we live in democracy, but all we have from democracy today is that you can say whatever you want and you have the right to vote. But nobody listens to you and politicians do however they want anyway because they don't work in our interests, they work for large lobbies and corporations! The politicians are only marionettes representing large lobbies and in return they get rich and powerful. Democracy exists only in that menor as long as it's not a threat to our rulers!

Because it's not targeting illegal immigration. It's targeting people who have already settled, speak the language, and even have citizenships. It targets people who come from different ethnicities and try to infringe on individuals' constitutional rights and treat them as second class citizens. If people truly want to revert back to tribalism, say goodbye to EU and the entire Western culture. Eventually, it will serve foreign interests mych more than locals.

Banning a party is the most undemocratic thing IMO. In Sri Lanka we have banned a political party for organizing violent insurrections against the government. @Commander_Chopper
@Commander_Chopper 6 күн бұрын
It's by no means "someones personal political opinion". The vast majority of the citizens agree that the AfD is extremist. There have been nationwide protests by millions of people over this, it's been a long time coming. Additionally all that parliament deliberates is asking the constitutional court to review the AfDs constitutionality. The decision whether to ban the party is not made by parliament but by the court, so it's a judicial decision, not a political one.
