Hey Ania! I leave you some ascii codes for windows users : ß ALT + 225 ä ALT + 132 Ä ALT + 142 ö ALT + 148 Ö ALT + 153 ü ALT + 129 Ü ALT + 154 ñ ALT + 164

And in some editors you must have the num lock on. For those that don't understand what Nelson is explaining, if you hold the alt key and type the numbers listed, then release the alt key, the special character is displayed.

For typing umlaut in Mac, there is another short cut. ü - Type 'Option' key and 'u' at the same time. It will show double dots only. Release both keys and press 'u' again ö - Type 'Option' key and 'u' at the same time, to get double dots. Release both keys and press 'o' again Ö - Type 'Option' key and 'u' at the same time, to get double dots. Release both keys and press 'o' again, with shift key pressed. ...

For the Ü sound, you make an O shape with your mouth but make an E (ee) sound. Works every time, especially for words like Bücher (books) with harder consonant sounds that follow it. It's like saying "you" with a rich Scottish accent but without the y, lol. Also, a good example of the long Ö sound is Österreich (Austria)
@davidroseman49894 жыл бұрын
on a windows PC: set English (International) keyboard CTRL+ALT+P = ö CTRL+ALT+Y = ü CTRL+ALT+Q = ä Add SHIFT to each keypress for caps, IMO easier than remembering ALT codes Vielen Dank Anja, Tschüss!

For us is so easy because we have all this for example Ü we have the Y and is the same pronunciation , Ä is the same in Albanien Ë the Ö is like a ë and o together for us . We say very easy the R and H and the β . I used to complain about them but thanks god that we have them 😂 .. Ur a big healp for me thank you, God bless you 🙏

For Windows and Linux, I recommend using keyboard input method. You can look this up on Google, but there are two I recommend. Use the English International and simply use alt gr+q for ä, alt gr+y for ü, and alt gr+p for ö. For German input method, ; changes to ö, ' to ä, and [ to ü. For capitals simply hold the shift key while doing either method.
@gallenfier8 жыл бұрын
Note that Chromebooks uses a Linux OS so the above methods work for them as well. For tablets, for the most part just press down and hold on the letter to augment.

For windows users Change the language to English international. Ä = shift + "+ A, Ö = shift + "+ O and Ü = shift + " +U

I use it all the time on Mac for "die umlaute" & "ß" little help @Anja. Its always and its even simpler Press [Long Press a + (and then numeral) 4 ] = ä, [ Long Press s & then press 1 = ß OR Option + s = ß] Similarly for [Long Press U + 2 = ü], Long Press o + 2 = ö. Now you dont have to think just press the umlaut letter on english keyboard long and then choose 2 for most & some cases 1 & 4 like ß & ä.

On a mac it is faster to type alt and u at the same time and then a, o or u to get ä, ö or ü, respectively. On Windows 10 with United States - International Keyboard you type " and then a, o or u.

The very biggest deal I need on learning about umlats is the difference in pronunciation between wurde, war, hatte and its umlat cousins, since those words are used all the time in sentences.
@nicolasfauvel59346 жыл бұрын
Schön! Sehr nützlich. BUT NOTE, as “Bus and Lorry Driver Saint Leonard” has said, the vowel in English “mad” and “end” are not the same (at 1.26). It is true that the short German “ä” is like the vowel in English “end” (IPA: /ɛ/), but the vowel in English "mad" (IPA: /æ/) does not exist in German. German speakers often hear the vowels as similar and use /ɛ/ for both when speaking English.

Nice video, but I'm not sure about he English equivalents. As far as I know, the vowel in 'mad' does not exist in German phonology, at least the RP. version It would be really useful if you could do a video comparing the German 'ä' and 'e' sounds. Also, the vowel in flirt is unrounded and central, whereas the German oe is rounded and frontal (and does not exist in English phonology) Nevertheless, you give clear explanations and the video is really useful so thank you for that :)
