RIP HRH Prince Philip (1921-2021). Next to English and other languages, he was also pretty fluent in speaking German, which also had to do with his mother (Alice von Battenberg) being of German descent. Let us remember him and learn German words and phrases. Dear Patrons, I decided to not feature Patreon-related things in the video itself this time. Thanks for your highly appreciated support! His pronunciation is pretty accurate but sometimes he's insecure in grammar and choice of vocabulary. He's speaking German like a person who has learned a language during childhood but then didn't have had much practice in his adult life. Although I must confess that there are many people who spent their entire life in Germany and still don't have a better command of the language. Hervorragend, Prinz Philip! Sie werden uns fehlen.

German was in fact Prince Philip's first language. Prince Philip's second was french and his third language was English. After living in the U.K. for so many years he didn't have much chance to use his German so I spouse he became a bit rusty. Prince Charles is also trilingual. Price Charles also speaks fluent German and French.

I think with German the grammar really holds non native speakers back. It’s complicated and my old German teacher at school was obsessed with it. I have retained reasonable french but my German is very rusty. My German friends say don’t worry and we make errors too but it does make one self conscious. When travelling in Germany as soon as they hear my accent they switch to fluent English anyway as if to say “your German is shit, I can speak perfect English so let’s put us all out of our misery.” In France and Italy I am forced to use the languages as less people are comfortable speaking English.

Exactly! I was so impressed how incredibly good and fast his German still is and how little and only minor mistakes he makes, but mostly how on point his pronuntiation is. He really sounds almost like a native who speaks German all the time to me! Through his sisters he still has relatives in Hesse and Hannover and both places I think say "Jacht" (Jagd) or "sacht" (sagt) for example. A bit like former chancellor Schröder spoke. :) Also his speed when speaking and just how native it sounds is impressive to me!

What was impressive was that Philip was speaking 'off the cuff' in an interview rather than in a prepared speech. Not only was that fairly uncommon for senor members of the Royal Family but he was perfectly at ease in the use of language. As noted, he occasionally had to hunt for the right word but he was confident enough that it didn't disrupt his thoughts.

Hats off, it was a brave thing to do, speaking in a language he probably didn’t have occasion to speak very often! . Yes a very good point. Batten burg or Mountbatten is not his real paternal name. He is a Prince of Denmark in the male line which goes back to the House of Oldenburg which is German. Of course the English are originally a Germanic race from Northern Germany so ultimately the root language and ethnicity is German.

Thanks so much for this video! I was amazed at his German. I just returned from living in Germany for the last 15 years. I can carry on a conversation fluently and use fillers, but have a strong accent, mess grammar up plenty, and in no way sound as natural as he does. It was immediately obvious to me that he obtained a different level entirely. Not totally surprising maybe, since he was at school in Germany ( I learned it for the first time at middle age), but nice to have it confirmed that Prince P really was totally integrated in the German culture and language and society at that time. He was clearly an intelligent man. What impressed me the most was that he expressed himself just like many Germans I met - foremost concern for the animals of the world and environment and awareness of inequities in politics. His accent was perfect to my ears. I agree with the articles. My partner is German and often gets them wrong . He corrects me on an article - I tell him he is wrong so we google it - and often I am right and then he is shocked! Natives get them wrong too. For people criticizing the fact that Prince Phillip doesn't find the right word immediately - this is normal folks! We do that even in our native language. In addition, Prince Phillip can speak Greek and possibly Danish or other languages too. The brain can only hold so much information in the recent memory section. The more words you learn, the harder it becomes to access the precise word you need. He is no spring chicken here.

Prince Phillip WAS a native speaker of German. That is clear to me from the way he speaks. It is litterally is mother tongue. Of course, it's a bit rusty, and out of practice due to little use I suppose, but that doesn't change the fact that it he was a native speaker of German. The Danish Royal family brought to Greece as monarchs is German as well, I believe. It’s a hyphenated combination of three German names. Danish, I think, was considered a vulgar dialect. I’d be surprised if his first language wasn’t German. In one of his German clips he has a perfect closed vowel in ‘dagegen’.

Let’s not be over critical here: he sounds fluent to me and he is making the effort which is what counts. Nitpicking just puts people off from trying especially English speakers who are hindered as they have never really had a pressing need to learn another. I reckon this standard would give him a good grade on a German Degree oral here in the UK.

This was an interesting analysis, and I agree with the points made (of course I'm not great at German grammar). I have learned all the languages I speak by hanging with natives, I am bad at learning in classrooms and textbooks, but learn by listening and reading, so I want to emphasize what was said at the end of the video. Listen to natives, and ask bunch of questions, like why do you say it like this, then imitate the way they say it. If we think about it, we learn our native language(s) by listening to our parent(s) speak and then we imitate them. All this before we can read, write or even know what grammar is, so in my opinion this is the best way to learn a language.

As a retired German teacher, I am quite impressed, but not surprised by his accent. Obviously, he began speaking German before adolescence. To some extent, I am disappointed with the “Germanophobia” of the Britons as a result of the two world wars. Personally, I think a Royal Family named von Sachse-Coburg-Gotha or von Battenberg sounds more noble than Windsor or Mountbatten. It was a great disappointment to the Prince that he was not even allowed to pass his family’s name of Mountbatten to his children or grandchildren. They are now only Windsor’s.

I found this video fascinating. Im not a German speaker. I have read and heard about the different regional accents of German speakers in Germany and Austria. But I wondered if there are different accents for different classes in German? In the UK you can usually tell which country, region, a person is from by their accent. But also its really obvious what their class background is. That word sounds really dated, but its still true in the UK. I wondered if this is true in Germany and Austria?

Coming from the Greek Royal family, which ended up rather adrift in Europe after their deposition, I wouldn't be surprised by almost any Euro language coming out of his mouth! Incidentally: Do people realize that for Queen E. II's great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, German was her native maternal tongue? V's mother was German; and her children (including the eventual King Edward VII) grew up in a bilingual household, largely because of Victoria's husband Albert (of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha). The English royals would rather forget that Kaiser Wilhelm II (who led Germany into WW I ) was a close relation - Victoria's grandson.
