German Shepherd Protects Schnauzer from a Dalmatian

Today a Dalmatian was exploring the dog park and playing with a Husky and a Schnauzer did something to make the Dalmatian mad so he communicated 'no! back off' by lunging at him and snapping at him. Within seconds a German Shepard stepped in and stopped the Dalmatian. This video illustrates dog behavior at a dog park in a unique way because it shows the self-policing element of dogs in a pack-like setting.
**This video exists in order to educate people about dog behavior at dog parks. **

Most of these dogs seem to be extremely well socialized. They've got their park pack and they look after each other while teaching new dogs the rules. I love how the owners let the dogs sort it out and diffuse situations on their own. Seeing dogs discipline each other can be scary at first. My golden is so submissive he literally spent the first day at the dog park belly crawling and laying on his back. Whoever trained that German shepard has done a remarkable job, that even with all those feral instincts - his good nature and temperament shines through. And not only is he able to remain calm under stress and tension~ but he is able to constantly maintain that presence by checking on several engagements. When the Dalmatian goes off again, he goes to check in from a distance then runs off to have fun. Really goes to prove dogs have been helping humans for a very long time~ we kinda have them as lucrative pets now but in some ways they've been helping us since the dawn of time-crazy.

When my wife moved in (before we were married ) we had to introduce our dogs to each other . 1 male pit bull and 1 male black mouth curr. For almost 2 years they occasionally got into spartan death matches somtimes over an empty food bowl even. But now they’re best buddies. That was a roller coaster of emotions over the years . Every now and then they get a little “rude” but no violent fights anymore . I learned a lot about how they decide who’s alpha, and if I’m honest i think they still challenge each other for it on occasion. With 2 males it’s possible for them to co-exist. But *never* attempt that with 2 females. One day you’ll come home to a bloodbath . If you have more then 1 female you have to have at least 1 male so the females don’t kill each other

@@drugsarebad97 Yeah, our 2 male dogs would only ever fight over food, there was one time they got in a fight over a toy. However, our 2 females, one being a shitzu, the other being a chihuahua got in aggressive fights all the time for literally no reason. Thankfully, them being small dogs, it’s easier to break up the fights by just picking on up and shoving the other one aside with your foot. A lot harder breaking apart the males, both were mixed pit bull but one was a lot more mixed he didn’t like to let go so I would have to choke him to break his lock. He put 2 holes in my arm before and now I have these scars to always remember him since he isn’t with us anymore. He was only 1 1/2 years old when he passed, poor guy got hit by a car.

@@Cam09Sean1 thats not necessarily true. Its dependent on personality and socialization, also on the confidence level of the dog and owner. The German shepherd was confident and gave a warning then hip checked him. A good example of an unconfident shepherd and what could have been a bad situation (attacking) is the sable one earlier on. The wrestling/multiple dogs caused fear and then they chased. My male pup in that situation, would have turned and fought if I had let it get to that point. My female with more confidence and socialization would have hip checked or come to me to end it.

When you really socialize them, they will act how you would! I work in a doggie daycare, my German Shepherd Lady will be the doggie police for me, she does what this boy did in this video. She will correct puppies for being too rough or even older dogs, but she will never redirect onto them, she says HEY QUIT THAT! Then goes on her merry way. German Shepherds CAN be amazing dogs with the right leadership. That poodle on the other hand, personally I would muzzle train to socialize because just getting butt-sniffed and whipping around to bite the face like that is just ASKING for a fight to happen. Just speaking from experience! Poodle doesn’t seem outright aggressive or they would have kept trying to go after the dog - HOWEVER if that boxer was not so submissive then the poodle potentially could have had more fear aggression towards dogs. I’m glad they’re attempting to socialize though!

I saw it a little differently than some folks on here: It looked more like a - "Hey the Snauzer is my Friend - so don't overdo it." The Dalmation is like - "are we fighting here?" And the GS was like,"Nope just letting you know." And the Dalmation reacted fairly nonchalantly "OK fair enough." (The GS backs off a little too once his friend is out of it). It did not seem that either dog really wanted a fight (50 years+ experience with dogs). I would call that a peaceful draw. When dogs really want to fight it looks different and then you have to yell and throw each dog to get it to stop (usually they just want to play).

Saw this comment after a year but still, can't agree more. We have an Akita couple that is coming to our dog park. It is a smaller enclosed area if you may call it a park. If they're in, you don't wanna get close to the fence because they look and also as they're not well socialized, they're really scary. Nobody gets close to them other than the 2 dogs that they know from puppyhood. Even as a former trainer who's been worked with red zone cases mostly, i get nervous around them and we have aggressive big dogs around even strays yet none of them scares me like them.

I like how the big dogs stand up for the smaller dogs because they know that they're size/strength is equal to or greater than that of the aggressor! Also interesting how much restraint the largest dogs tend to have, and the smaller ones are usually the yappiest, maybe they think they have to compensate for their size with aggression and projecting a larger presence? Just like people! 😆

i’m a firm believer in dog training dog. it’s how they learn the best, in their own environment. an unruly young dog like dante being very quickly checked by the german shepherd obviously did something, because a few moments later, he did nothing more to the schnauzer and went back to playing. some owner intervention was fine, like the schnauzer getting told off for bothering the dalmation, but i think it got handled wonderfully by the dogs themselves, and that an owner stepping in would’ve thrown that off.

I've probably only PURPOSELY trained 1 dog in my lifetime, the rest just immediately "understood" me or would learn from the "pack leader" who my dad named King lol. If I told a new dog to stop doing something and they didn't listen, he would step in to make them😭. It used to scare me at first til I realized he wasn't actually hurting the other dogs.

Telling them off wont really do anything.. thats putting human emotions and logic on dogs. The dalmatian was a new commer ro the pack/ dog park and was doing unruly behavior by pack rules the little dog and some of the others were only enforcing the rules within the pack .. and when the dalmatian got bites the rest said.. yo... hold kn there buckaroo

I don’t even think he was really being that much of a problem really except in those moments. The rest of the time they’re all just playing with him.
@tubadude-2269

@@Axxidous i mostly see that too, but i also see the other larger dogs somehow noticing something about dante's energy that they needed to kinda put in check a lot. I only noticed that reaction mostly, and not how dante was somehow being a bit unacceptable to them up until the point he got triggered.

If you panic dogs can feel it. Best to remain calm, if something bad happens step in calmly. Dogs respond to leadership and being calm is a good way to portray it

I think it just comes with experience and learning pack dynamics. When you understand pack dyamics and dog behavior you're able to determine what is real aggression and what is just establishing pecking order and boundaries. All the owners did well not to intervene in this situation. The dalmation is young and learning how to interact with a pack. The other dogs were simply schooling(german shep intervention) or enforcing their personal boundaries(ex the french poodle that bared its teeth)
@05bastille
@05bastille 3 жыл бұрын
sometimes if you step in it can make turn the game or scolding into defense as they think becasue you're close you either spurring them on to fight or they think you might be in danger and get over protective. Normally they just calm each other down, mostly there isnt need for major intervention, unless maybe its a big one against a small one, but also their owner will know when its still chill and play and when they need help

My dog used to got bullied at the beginning then she startet bullying and now its getting better. I think i made some mistakes at the beginning reading my dog and others wrong, but i learnes from my mistakes and now we are most off the time calm and just enjoying dog parks :) i think its normal that no human and dog is perfect, but its good always try to learn

i know, the way he walked up challenging the dalmatian, i think it has to do with his broad pittie shoulders and head. it just took him a second to assert his dominance, dalmatian got the message straight away, and of course the other pit also had to check him again, funny how they do that lol

I love watching doggie politics. It's so fascinating to see the complex social behaviors playing out in real time, to see how emotions and intentions are expressed via body language and the limited vocabulary but complex syntax of their vocalizations. That so many of their behaviors have direct human analogues makes working to interpret them a fascinating and rewarding experience.

Dale did that for great reason actually, Dante dashing towards the Chi in the first clip, the Chi in the second clip showing uncomfortable body language telling Dante to leave and then Dante continuing is actually aggressive behavior from Dante, he's focusing on the Chi which fixation is bad. Dale is doing a fabulous job of protecting his little buddy and telling Dante "don't start no shit kid."
