Subscribe to Pals channel! youtube.com/@buddyandmikespal?si=b-KqEoXz0VKYVXnR The last time I groomed Pal he did not exhibit anxiety like today's groom, which is why we booked him a second appointment. Due to his stress I sent him home unfinished. The more he is subjected to grooming, the more accustomed he will become to it.

My favorite part is when he just succumbed, laid his head on the edge of the tub, looked at the wall, and just low key wept, “it’s ok, I’m dying, I’ve accepted my fate, tell my dad I love him.” Happy Thanksgiving from the U.S. everyone! Well, he will have an epic story to tell to his buddies, next time he meets them at the doggy park. We have an old, somewhat racist saying here in Australia: Never trust a New Zealander or an Alsatian dog. As Groucho said, I guess this is as true as most generalisations. Personally, I've found that if you behave like a decent person, and not a c-bomb, both the people, and the dogs are some of the most decent beings you'll ever meet.

He would be brave while bathing, but they need to trust the person. If you got their trust, they'll let you do anything to them. Also the dog you were sitting was protecting you. They're bred not to leave your side. That's why it's extra stressful for them not to be with a person they trust. Pretty much a 24/7 dog, but a great one. Greetings from Germany lol

He PROBABLY could have used one, but for a first time interaction with an anxious dog, that is an AWFUL thing do attempt. The big issue is, they _simply don’t know you like that._ A scared dog may not be inherently aggressive, but if they get a sudden feeling of being trapped by you, as someone they don’t fully trust yet? Their behavior matches that of any cornered animal. Even humans do this. It’s reflexive, rather than aggressive imo, because they are typically trying to get away from the threat, rather than harm it. The harm is just that they don’t have the momentary capacity to understand the difference between a comforting touch, vs a harmful one. Imagine having a panic attack on the train, because you have no friends or family around. And suddenly, some stranger is sitting next to you and FORCING you to let them brush your hair. Idk about you, but if they then wrapped their arms around my neck??? I would no longer care if they were just crazy, it would IMMEDIATELY become a fight to get them off of me, and to get out of the train car, at ANY cost to them. Basically? Don’t hug scared doggos, unless they recognize you as a friend. Even then, sometimes rescue dogs will still retain trauma responses, that just makes it a bad move to attempt, ever. Instead those dogs tend to learn to physically lean into your chest (over a loooong time) for a hug, if they ever take enough steps to overcome that trauma. Ultimately. It takes a long time getting to know a dog, to make this judgment call for the first time. Even in younger dogs that aren’t puppies, and even _somewhat_ knowing them already. ANY dog has the capacity to snap at a person they’ve barely known for an hour, who tries to restrain them with a hug. But ESPECIALLY someone who is professionally putting them in an uncomfortable, but necessary, position. They don’t always have the capacity to understand why, or if their owner will ever even come back, unless they can escape. Sometimes they can be comforted by a soft consistent pressure on their sternums (the center of their chests) or the nape of their necks (where their skulls connect to their spines). Hence, why the videographers head wrap _did_ manage to calm him a bit. I only did a few years of animal behavior with dogs before I completely changed direction to cats, so I could be outdated in my knowledge.

Well trained to being a good boy. It was sad to see that these spoiled ball lost good boys who is only outside for an hour or even less crying like a baby. I grew up with German Shepherds because my parents breed them for over 10 years. I`ve been in countless dog show and I use to trained Germen Shepherds. Not only ours but for other owners too. For obedience, for protecting and attacking. They had to know all the signs and all the orders. by the age of 8 months. Protection training had a senior level over 8 month old to make them more aggressive. But because of the obedience training they always know how to behave in different situation. They were good members of the families and tough when they need to be. We trained their intelligence with games too. They were well balanced. They lived outside in a nice doghouse not in our home. And it was alright. These good boy slowly loosing all the benefits of the German Shepherds.

It really depends. A husky is really stressful as they're working dogs and need an outlet for their energy. If that's a given, they're great. A GSD needs "their person" around and they'll be all calm and relaxed. They're bred as 1 on 1 dogs and will always have one favorite among all the people they love. They just lose hair all year long. But regular brushing instead of petting works pretty well. Difficult if you don't want hair around.

@irisatkinson1616 no shade to you, but this seems rather opinionated than objective. i'm going to break it down into a few parts, so if you don't want to read a lengthy comment then that's fine, you can ignore it. 1) just because cats can naturally groom themselves doesn't mean consistent professional sessions are cruel. in fact, there are a multitude of reasons why it's actually beneficial for them, two big ones are: • *coat maintenance*: fur hygiene is incredibly important in cats (most animals, to be honest). cats are very clean animals and are always self-grooming to keep their coats tidy, but it's not easy for every breed. long-haired cats and hairless cats are the first to come to mind. long-haired cats often need regular grooming sessions to keep their coat from becoming matted and easy to maintain. hairless cats don't have a coat at all, meaning they have to be bathed weekly to keep their skin clean (like humans). • *health*: regular grooming sessions are good for animals health. when you keep a consistent routine, it improves the overall health of your pet (whether it be cats, dogs, birds, or something else). grooming involves much more than a bath, it involves dental care, nail care, matt control, and much more. adding onto this, professional groomers notice when something is wrong with your pet. while they can't officially diagnose anything, they can give suggestions on what to do about it, like vet recommendations and simple remedies while you're waiting to see one. grooming is also good for the pets mental health. while yeah, these videos kinda show otherwise, you're seeing animals that weren't properly desensitized to grooming when they were young, of course they're going to be terrified. in the end though, the animal feels significantly better mentally and physically. how do you feel after finishing a shower? you're all clean, you don't smell (hopefully), you can feel more confident about yourself. it feels great, right? same logic applies to animals. 2) it's not cruel to expose cats to water. . like, at all. while many cats probably don't like being wet, it's just a minor inconvenience that's necessary to get good results that the cat *will* be happy with. plus, you can condition your cat to like/tolerate water by exposing them to it over time, so it's a fixable inconvenience too. not to mention, they aren't going to stay wet for long during professional grooming sessions, so it's not even much of an issue to begin with, your cat will be fine. 3) your last point, although i can see where you're coming from, is definitely very subjective and close-minded (in my opinion). these videos are not filmed just for entertainment, but for educational purposes too. stressed animals are a very common occurrence, it'd be weird for a professional groomer not to have videos showing these scenarios. she handles the situation really well too, the dog is definitely just being dramatic here. if the dog was genuinely terrified or really stressed, she would've approached the problem differently. also, this ties back to one of my previous points about desensitization. if you desensitize your pet to these things as a puppy, they won't be terrified later on. this doesn't just apply to grooming, it applies to vet appointments and car-rides (and some other things, but those are the more common worries) as well. TL;DR: grooming sessions are beneficial for all animals, including cats, it's not cruel to do. also the dog is fine, your dogs would also be fine here. please actually read my reply if you haven't already, it's good knowledge to have.

This is a great demonstration of the dog's capacity to get over the panic pretty quickly and clue in that nothing terrible is going on; hence, the importance of not avoiding such experiences, so as to bring up a versatile, calm, resilient dog.

The dog didn't "get over" it. The dog gave up because he was retrained and had no other option.
@Oleg.G.
@Oleg.G. Жыл бұрын
@@ryandelavega3807 Yes, and the procedure for this retraining is called "exposure and desensitization," whereby through progressive and repeated exposure to an anxiety-producing stimulus, the subject becomes desensitized to it and no longer responds with the same emotion. The subjective experience of this is grasping that the stimulus in question does not represent any real danger and therefore being able to tolerate it. In other words, one "gets over" the initial fear. Are there any other semantics that need to be cleared up here?

@@Oleg.G.lol I think we all know desensitization if anyone has ever owned a dog, unless one is ignorant. You make it sound like you only know this topic. Preach much? The fact is that he isn’t desensitized YET and he hasn’t been exposed to grooming experience enough that he is desensitized in this clip. Only the second time he’s bring groomed here and we could clearly see he hasn’t been desensitized yet. Your comment is quite a turn off to many it’s very condescending. Do you think “getting over” and being “desensitized” have two totally different meanings?! You ain’t the only person who owned a dog and he’s actually right, this dog hasn’t gotten over the fear of being groomed as it hasn’t gotten used to or what some fancy term called “desensitized”. Some people think just throwing around some words they’re superior. Yikes.

@@KittenBowl1 ME preaching? What are you talking about? The guy was trying to "correct" me while actually saying the same thing I was, so I set the record straight. And no, I don't think "getting over" something and being desensitized to it are different things. If you re-read my comment carefully, you'll see that I was saying precisely the opposite -- that those are the SAME thing semantically. And you know what, I'm done caring about people being "turned off" by facts and valid arguments. If someone isn't able to sustain a vigorous, interesting debate, I'd suggest they don't start it in the first place. Rather than calling me "condescending," maybe it's time to hold up a mirror and see where all this hypersensitivity and desire to admonish and lecture is really coming from.

I have to admit my husband and I didn't do our research and didn't realize how anxious GSDs are before we adopted our senior GSD 😅 It's ok though, we adore him anyway. I have also realized our boy is apparently quiet for his breed haha. Gosh I love shepherds so much 😍😊

Hey thanks for adopting a senior GSD, that’s so kind ❤️, mine is 10 and I know it can be quite troublesome when their health isn’t as good anymore 😊

We adopted a senior GSD too. When he died, he left a giant GSD shaped hole in my heart. We'll have another one day. For now our other two seniors are glad the drama has calmed down around here

@edselby I'm so sorry for your loss ☹️ pups really do take a piece of our hearts, don't they. Since we adopt seniors, I've already lost 2 dogs since 2020 so there are a couple various shaped holes in my heart. Because our GSD likes to be pure chaos sometimes we'll be getting him a buddy soon to hopefully redirect some of that GSD anxiety 😂 sadly we can't get another GSD because our apartment breed rules changed 😕

@@Gemma_626 Yeah, I agree with that. I can't help but laugh at the nervous barking, though. I'm not saying it makes me happy or that I take joy in Pal being stressed. The sound of barking just makes me laugh in general. You're looking way too deep into what I said and acting like you think I'm being cruel, but I'm not.
