1984 - to me the best year in music ever! A year full of smashs. New artists came to rise as Cyndi Lauper, Alphaville, FGTH, Talk Talk, Nik Kershaw or Howard Jones. Some had their greatest hit song that year: Laura Branigan, Limahl, Duran Duran, Kenny Loggins, Van Halen or Stevie Wonder. Giants like Queen, Slade or Tina Turner have had one of their biggest years ever. Many, I mean really many of 1984 songs are well known classic hits now. Think about "Do they know it's Christmas", "Last Christmas", "One Night in Bangkok", "Shout" or "Wild Boys".

Eagerly waiting for this one, thanks again so much, Francis! For me, 1984 is the year I've got the best memories of! Dance school, new friends, first (unlucky) love etc. I forgot about the three versions of "Kalimba de Luna", all published within a few weeks (I wonder, which band inspired the namegiving of "Pepe goes to Cuba" ... ). And I was absolutely sure, that "Smooth Operator" was a number one hit! Sometimes, memory is delusive!

Amazing. Thanks for the upload. 1984, the year everything ( including hard rock) sounded synth poppish. 1984 is the year i bought my first album, Forever Young / Alphaville. That leads me to the surprise that Forever Young ( the single) never went to number one in Germany? Holy. Nevermind that, it did actually not go to number in many other countries as well. The song is a classic either way, clearly a symbol for the 80s melancholy romantic pop sound.

well at least Big In Japan was #1, Sounds Like A Melody #3 and Forever Young #4. Not many bands / artists had 3 top 5 hits in germany in 1984!

The following years 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 is also great hit years! My favourite songs on this video is: Relax, Big in Japan, People are People, Self Control, Sounds like a melody, Time after Time, 25 Lovers, Such a shame, High energy, Careless whispers, When the Rain begins to fall, The second time, Private dancer and The wild Boys. ✌️✌️✌️✌️

Great list again. I think there is a mix-up at 23:17. This song (from 1983) is Another Word, not World (album The Party's over). The extra "L" might confuse one or two due to Living in Another World from 1986 (The Colour of Spring).

My birth year! (November baby here) Thank you for another great video. Amazing 'Thriller' wasn't a hit there - guess everyone had the album. The year of Madonna's emergence and well rewarded too. Schlager and NDW still around with the latter established in the charts now. Italo starting to make it's presence known now and taking off. Shocked 'Its A Miracle' wasn't a hit there! Their Eurovision entry 'Aufrecht gehn' which deserved more in the contest didn't do well either. Shame really as it's a touching heartfelt ballad. The god awful ESC winner 'Diggi-loo' made the chart. No thanks. Too high. 'Its Raining Men' a flop!! Big here in the UK. Some evergreens here and big hitters which are still known as well as the local hits. Laura Branigan's version of 'Self Control' is better than the RAF one I feel. Noticing the duplicate covers are still about too albeit not as prominent as the previous years. 1984 best year for music and the Germans having taste. Still want to know or rather not know what 'Slice Me Nice' was about lol oh and Eartha Kitt loves the men lol (same here only if they're nice men not horrible).

Thriller wasn't a hit in Germany, you def read wrong pal it got to number 21-very confused-didnt get to number 42 lol Now P.Y.T. Wasn't a hit a single there only getting to number 51! Yea It's Raining Men was a flop shame really-but least it was a hit/very big hit single in other countries!
@some.random.baldie21112 жыл бұрын
@@mikekaraoke 21 is respectable, but compare it to UK (10), US (4) and France and Spain (1 in both) it's a flop compared to those countries. It's subjective what you would call a hit but that's is bad compared to some. It's weird how a song is known worldwide, but can not be a hit domestically in a country. Interestingly, the UK was where the Weather Girls had their best place - 2nd!
@andimusicjunkie39902 жыл бұрын
But It's raining men is still a banger at every German party and Aufrecht geh'n is immortal. Sometimes the chart ranking isn't everything. 😉

Kinda shocked when I realised that Like a Virgin, Last Christmas and Do They Know It's Christmas all entered on the same day. I would've bet money on all three being #1 hits.
@Glamking1 Жыл бұрын
Last Christmas finally reached number one at the end of 2021 in Germany, as for Like a Virgin it topped the chart in its native United States and Australia which gave Madonna her first chart-topper and for the thought too, her first German chart-topper had to wait until 1987.

14:55 is that a German language version of Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't it be Good"? If so, that would be much like how in 1993 Ricky Martin recorded a song in Spanish whose English title translates to "What Day Is It?" that is basically a Spanish language version of "Self Control"...
