The German Spitz and the Pomeranian share the same ancestry, descending from larger sled-pulling Arctic breeds they date back almost 6,000 years, and their history has been intertwined ever since.
These guys originate from Germany where they were both traditionally used as herding and watch dogs, and although they are now more commonly found in family homes, they still make for a great watchdog with their piercing barking.
At a quick glance, the German Spitz and the Pomeranian are similar looking pups, however, upon closer inspection they are quite different in their appearance.
Their temperament is very similar, as are most of the other factors surrounding them both.

We rescued one from someone who no longer wanted him ,according to them he was a Pomsky and about one yr. old. They neglected to inform us of his seizures which are extremely violent at times and believe to be the real reason they no longer wanted him . He is the sweetest dog we've ever owned but, when comparing him to other Pomsky's he just didn't fit the physical attributes of others we've seen. Not until we ran across a video of German Spitzs did we realize he was mislabeled. Regardless of the mislabeling and seizures he is part of our family and he is extremely smart ,adorable and a very good watchdog to boot. They do require some maintenance with their double coats so keep that in mind when considering.

my spitz had seizures too but I got them under control after 2 years with just a food change ~ he gets hypoallergenic food now only and has NO seizures anymore. maybe worth a try ?

@@robbiddlecombe8392 technically, it's impossible to know if the pup will be a pomeranian or not. Pomeranian is a size classification (the smallest) within the german spitz breed.

Pomeranian is name for toy spitz(part of german spitz breed) as a name called by countries outside of its homeland. Pomeranian is related to the other german spitz varieties. Also known as zwergspitz"dwarf spitz". They shrunk him down from larger spitz in england. They are some of the best watchdogs, and the most loyal dogs around, incapacitated only by size✨

I’ve had two Pomeranians, but I’m beginning to suspect the last one was a German Spitz not a Pom because he was taller and weighed 28 pounds, but he wasn’t fat, just muscle and fur. But he had a Pomeranian coat and Pomeranian characteristics, so who knows, he could just have been a huge Pom. Lol. I’d love to have another Pom, but I want to make sure I get it from a reputable kennel, so I’m on a list and doing the waiting thing now. I bet your dog is adorable! Sometimes I wish we could post pics because I’d love to see it. Give him/her a nice belly rub from me.🙂

This is inaccurate. The dogs that Queen Victoria got were an old breed spitz - Volpino. She called them "toy" Pomeranians - a misnomer. The Pomeranian is a product of German Spitz and Volpino. Volpinos also show up again with "American Eskimo" dogs (German spitz white) in the toy and miniature as they provide a stable white coat. Shame you don't mention the Volpino.

They *pretty much* are the same. "American Eskimo Dog" has nothing to do with the indigenous peoples of Alaska. They are descended from German Spitz brought over by German immigrants; renamed because anything from Germany was not too popular in the early 20th century due to a couple of world wars. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Spitz "When German spitzes were brought to the US, these were renamed the American Eskimo Dog due to widespread anti-German sentiment during World War I, although other breeds ("White Keeshonds" and Pomeranians, along with Japanese Spitzes) were also used in the formation of the American variety.
