The reason why there is a discrepancy in what the Berliner is called comes from the use of the term Pfannkuchen in German. Outside of Berlin's local vernacular, it denotes a pancake similar to what one would commonly associate with the term. Now, as in Berlin the term denotes this jelly donut, it was technically referred to as a Berliner Pfannkuchen, a Berlin-style pancake everywhere else. Due to the inordinate length, the term Pfannkuchen was then dropped over time, getting to the Berliner name.

Hi guys The Curry Wurst location is a true insider tip and really worth to have it there. Also not that known among the Berlin citizens. I was really surprised to see it. Just wondering how you found that spot. Unfortunately the Döner you had is not typical Turkish. With all the different spices it has a Arabic influence and is almost Shawarma. Nevertheless this one is definitely one of the best.

@@ChasingaPlate , its true, a real Currywurst comes in small slices, there are machines to do that job in most of those places. Sliced, it also absorbs the sauce and spices a lot better. But there is a very colourful lot of Currywurst philosophers in Germany with all sorts of claims and opinions such as where it was invented and by whom and how its made from what? Same as the argument over the pavlova downunder!

Diese winzige 3,5 qm-Currybude am Steglitzer Damm verkauft hunderte Würste jeden Tag und das seit inzwischen Jahrzehnten. Da scheint also jemand was richtig zu machen.

@@ChasingaPlate I guess it was more because of the extreme amount of sauce :D The Currywurst was completely drenched in sauce, there was literally twice as much sauce as there was sausage :D And I've also never seen a Currywurst on a stick. It looked really weird for me, but the taste was obviously good as I could tell from your reactions :) Yes, Döner is hard to eat because it's so big :D But here in the Ruhr area, we usually get thicker bread (which is probably my favourite part about it) and even more fillings :D The bread you had appears to be in a triangular shape. Usually it has a round-ish shape, so the filling don't fall out that easily. And yes, I enjoyed your video a lot :) I hope you visit other parts of Germany soon :)

Nutzername92a hahaha it was SO drenched in sauce 🤣 we are both sauce fiends so that suited us 😄 so interesting hearing about regional variations like the different shaped bread! @@ChasingaPlate you will find unnumbered varieties of Doener. Every store has their own type of sauce, then there is greek-style, chicken, lamb, selfmade bread and so on. Same with Curry-Wurst. In the other video you had Eisbein, which is served different in southern germany and is called "Haxn". Then there is green cabage in the north, which is mostly served during winter. If you really want to go through all the local german dishes, you should calculate four to six weeks just to get a glimpse.

4:09 The sausage is soft from the outside, because it is produced without any casing. The sausage is called "Wollwurst" and gets its texture, due to directly blanching it, after production.

You can see that the Döner-meat is of good quality, because you can still see the different layers. That means it is hand made (stacked) and not minced meat (which can have many additives) but actual slices of beef.

I really love how you tell us the history of the food that you are eating. I find it really fascinating. I never used to be a big meat person but I'm obsessed with the stack of meat and how they shave it off in small amounts for the kebabs. You do a lot of research into where to eat where the locals eat which is often more authentic as it's not aimed at the taste buds of the average traveller. The research, filming, editing and then you reply to so many messages takes a long time but I want you to know that I see all of your love and time in your videos. Thank you for sharing all of this with us, it's really special. I hope that you are both enjoying time with family and friends. Xx

Without question, Chasing A Plate is THE BEST food vlog on KZbin. Skillfully able to articulate food flavors and textures, they bring to life their eating experiences through words and comparisons like no other vloggers can do. There is little doubt that these folks are super-tasters because their descriptions are so artfully detailed and complete. Combined with relevant and interesting background context, thoughtful video captures and superb editing, this vlog surpasses all others. I could taste the currywurst and doner kebab descriptions, loved the contrast on Turkish doner as well as the info surrounding "ich bin ein Berliner" and, above all, that gob-smacking dog at the start !

as a Turk living in germany i must admit, that Döner in Germany tastes much better than in Turkey because in Germany they put special yoghurt sauce and in Turkey not. That special yoghurt sauces make such huuuuge difference. I order my Döner always with double yoghurt sauce

Hi Shockwelle1, it’s so interesting to get a Turk’s view on this! The two versions are so different aren’t they? We ate this döner in Istanbul recently: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJmXaYt9rN2MfsU it was utterly delicious but we’ve gotta say- the yoghurt sauce is sooooo good and such a great addition! LOL I am a Turkish living in Turkey, I also lived in Germany for a year. Nobody in Turkey adds youghurt sauce but it makes them delicious. I didn’t like the meat in Europe, it was like plastic, maybe it was because of cheap döner restaurants that I visited. Prag’s döner was good. Döner meat in Turkey is more tasty, salty and oily. 😍

Just a little addition, the Berliner, has more than two names, it is called differently in different regions, some of the names I am familiar with are: Berliner (Ballen), Pfannkuchen, Krapfen, Kräppel, (Kreppel), Schmalzgebackenes, Kirchweihkrapfen, Puffel. They have traditional fillings, which are different in different regions, and then there is of course all kinds of other fillings. What I would not call it is a donut as the dough, although similarly fried, is different in texture. Btw, jams in Germany have a high standard, no messing with apple plus flavoring as fake plum, or such. The jams are what they claim to be. The Currywurst on the stick is definitely something I have never seen. But why not.

I don't know if this was already mentioned in the comments but the so called Pfannkuchen has a lot of different names trough germany. As it is Pfannkuchen oder Pfannekuchen in Berlin an parts of saxonia, Krapfen or Kräppel in the south of germany and as you mentioned Berliner most common in eastern Germany. To add some connfusion the term Pfannkuchen is literly translated pancake, and the most people will mean this one. Where as where Pfannkuchen means Berliner the pancake is called Eierkuchen.

Me as a guy born and raised in Berlin, I can say that I eat Döner once a week but Currywurst maybe once in a year :,)... But wow you liked the Berliner Kindl Beer ? I hate it ! There are so much more beers like Heineken (i know its not from Germany) Paulaner or Bitburger wich are waaaay better!
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
😄😄😄😄 I guess it’s one of those dishes- sort of like with Kiwis and pies and fish and chips. They’re iconic dishes but not everyday types of food. Delicious nonetheless though! The döner in Berlin are great! Packed with filling! @sagichdirdochnicht46535 жыл бұрын
Berliner Kindl isn't that bad. Paulaner is allright. But Heineken? And don't even start on Bitburger, why would you drink that?! It's the worst beer I've ever had. And I had real bad beers. The Beauty about German beer is NOT brands. If someone from the other side of the country knows the beer you drink, you've propably had the wrong brand. Buy local beers! Best beers I've ever had where the ones, that nobody outside the region would ever know. This is also what I do, when I go somewhere in Germany I haven't been before. If I want a drink, I'll just grab a random Bottle and see how it turns out.

There is still a discussion about "Was the Curry Sausage invented in Berln or at the Ruhr Area" and which is the better one. In Germany Berlin is sometimes like the USA - Everything good was invented by them, everything not so good by others :-) The Döner Kebab (proofed invention from a turkish restaurant owner in Berlin) is a germanized variation of turkisch Kebab. In turkey the meat , salad, sauce and bread are traditionaly served on a plate side by side. to make this eatable when walking the restaurant owner but all the food inside the sliced bread.
@ChasingaPlate5 жыл бұрын
Hi DSP16569, hahahahaha it's like that in many places we reckon! The Döner Kebab was very different to what we were eating in Istanbul- we actually just finished filming our Istanbul series before Berlin so it was great to see the difference and how the dish has morphed! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJmXaYt9rN2MfsU Hope you enjoyed this video and like the rest of our Berlin series. @@ChasingaPlate I saw an interview with the turkish inventor of the Döner Kebab. He said, that his turkish restaurant was pretty empty, because all these damn germans were soo busy during lunch-time. Just running around and eating while running. So he took everything from the plate and put it into a kind of bread roll. And our #1 fast food was born. In the meantime you find this german kind of döner in Turkey, too.
