Hahaha. Those were "Mary mother of god" portions. Nice to see you enjoying yourselves in Germany. Nothing like German meats and the Germans always give an honestly huge portion of everything. Have you had the chance to sample some spaetzle, a Swabian noodle that some say enjoys some faint similarities with Hokkien Mee? And years ago on a cold German day, I had my first taste of gluhwein, which is hot red wine that has been simmering with some spices. It's lovely, especially for a shivering soul. As for now, I am dreaming of some Eisbein.

I would agree.. its places like the northeast and the midwest/PA that has all that good comfort food. Meatloaf is german but the top comfort food locations in the USA have good meatloaf. Besides the south. Oh and Poland who can forget too, the polish food that came to PA and the midwest. and then u have the south which is awesome with bbq but the standard comfort foods in America derive from England and Germany, Ireland I would say. Bangers and mash also.

This video might be 3 months old, but I just wanted to note that Boulette is usually done half pork half beef, sometimes even just pure pork. We tend to mix a little white bread (usually brötchen) into the raw meet to make it a bit more airy and "bind" it together. A lot of people put some onions in there, too. The crust usually is just burnt mustard, haha.

That red cabbage is also a Dutch dish, lve never seen any German foods video covering this underated vegie. Its not actually pickled, its cooked with butter, vinegar, water and either cloves or nutmeg and then you make a slurry of cornflour, vinegar and sugar to thicken it. The vinegar taste makes it seem pickled. In Holland they serve it with Rookworst (smoked sausage) and potatoes! Its the only Dutch dish my Mum learnt to make from my Oma and it's real comfort food and oh so tasty! Well done on finding that butcher/ restaurant, what a absolute gem. In Prague (l think) there main central market has a Butcher with an eating area also and apparently its very popular. What a genius find on this one guys👍

Yes to all. A little trivia: drinking age is 16, 14 in the presence of an adult, you are allowed to drink in public, beer is even sold at mcd, in the south it is part of the breakfast and in the rest an usual drink to go along with lunch. Also most germans go for a beer right after work with their colleagues to end the workday.

The "Boulette", the meatball or rissole seems to be made from some sort of really fine sausage meat. Never seen one like that before, I know them as a 50/50 blend of pork n beef mince, some onions, spices and sometimes a little crumbed, then shallow fried. You can actually see what is in it! BTW, that red cabbage is called "Rotkraut" and isn't pickled at all (nor is Sauerkraut) but braised with vinegar and sugar added.

thomas really was on point there.. that's comfort, home cooked style food :) often butcher serve such dishes for lunch since many small companies or offices are not having options to eat. So these places are a great option if you don't wanna bring your food or eat fast food but want some food like you may cook it at home. Also really great for older people who are alone or not being able to cook anymore. My grandparents always got food from a local butcher for lunch when there wasn't someone cooking for them when my grandma couldn't do it herself anymore. They could still enjoy the traditional food in good quality rather than getting some hospital like dishes or even junk food. Often they even sell in their butcher shops cans or glasses with stews or sauces or other things. So you can cook them at home just by warming up. Stored for years or whenever you need them - and still not being artificial industrial products. (So if you come next time, take some "Rouladen" or "Gulasch" or other things home - so you can enjoy a part of german food culture whenever in mood ;) ) I shouldn't forget to say that also Sauerkraut and that red cabbage (Rotkraut/Rotkohl/Blaukraut) you can buy prepared in cans, bags or glasses. This isn't like doing it at home from scratch but still very very good. Especially cause not many people actually make their Sauerkraut at home because of the fermentation process that takes a lot of time and effort. Hope you did enjoy your time here and will come again to see more since there are many other places to visit - and other food to try since even the exact same dishes you ate there will taste completely different in the south, north or west of germany :)

Hi ClassiX, honest, hearty food- doesn't get much better. I can imagine those meals would be great in winter time too! We loved how you could get meals from the butcher shops- it makes so much sense. I wish it was more common- it's definitely not a thing in NZ where we're from. Rouladen was actually our first pick- not the boulette but they didn't have it that day. Hope we can get back to Germany soon and eat it. So many people have said the same as you- that the dishes change in flavour from region to region- we can't wait to return to sample them all! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena 😄

@@ChasingaPlate glad to hear you've enjoyed it! I recommend to also visit the smaller cities or countryside apart from only big cities. Check and ask also for street festivals going on. We often have some sort of community gathering in the city or parks at many times of the year. (Probably Oktoberfest in munich is the biggest known to tourists but it's getting too commercial, overpriced and way too full. I know many tourists wanna visit it some day. But i would recommend to try similar festivals in other cities at that time of the year.) Already start writing way too much haha. Just wanna say to not only stay in the big cities but maybe also think about a road trip. I didn’t use to be a beer drinker but Thomas convinced me that I needed to get into it when travelling in South East Asia. I love it now 😄 thanks for commenting and watching this one mate. Hope your week goes well! Cheers, Sheena

Sauerkraut is fermented white or "pointy" cabbage, so i guess it's as good as the same dish ;-) and the blueish/ redish side on the other plate is also cabbage. It's either called Rotkohl (redcabbage) or blaukraut (blue-"thing that grows just above the soil"(literally herb, though just like in sauerkraut it stands for whatever reason for cabbage here)) depending on the region as it has varying colours depending on the acidity of the soil it grows on. We also have green cabbage (Grühnkohl) dishes in the winter. Pork, potatoes and cabbage are pretty much the basis of our existence, well that plus bread and beer.

Hi Ar Em. So glad you enjoyed part one! We thought going really traditional for the first one would be perfect. There is such an amazing amount of beer and opportunity to drink beer in Germany. We loved going to the bottle shops and picking which beers to purchase to have in the evening at home. 🍻 Thanks so much for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀

Thank you for the video. You are a great, lovely, smart explorer couple! I find it quite funny as a native german (38 years) to watch you enjoy our traditional food. Of course, I know dozens of meat dishes and the sausages produced in more than a few regions of my country. Berlin is nice, but... well, some of my fellow countrymen imported their traditions to berlin in the last 20 years. The butcher shop you visited in berlin offers the usual dishes for the workers, i.e. the usual berlin citizen until the 2000s. Since then, these shops became rare and usually (not in this quarter aka "Kiez") oriental arab or turkish shops offer their services and food - simply no german traditional food. I know a bit about the berlin of today and the berlin of the 30s because my grandfater was born and raised in berlin and I he made me a curious listener of his childhood and youth in berlin. Well, yes some get used to sauerkraut. I don't eat the flesh meals each day, but like to eat sauerkraut in winter times of course and like mediterranean food in summer times a bit more (no salad). Well, I am not fan of the korean (healthy) Kimchi and stick to the few traditional stereotype food using similar cabbage with very different spices - I think koreans should enjoy life a bit more and not eat twenty things in parallel at the same time only to meet the expetations of the host, but spent time on three or four ingredients for a dish (flesh, side dishes) and then offer more dishes of the same alignment for the next round or guests and also try different wines and not one more or less simple (which one for the same flesh? lol). Of course, you find the best traditional food in Baden-Würtemberg (where I lived for four years) and Bavaria (where I worked for a few years). Or you try some of the dishes from Rhineland, where I come from (Öllüch mit Flönz, etc.)...In winter times, I like bean dishes the most, so more or less few german foods. The best german dishes.... you will find them also in Frankfurt a.M. (FFM) where I live - we have the great airport you will not find in berlin yet - for the next "years". FFM is a vibrant city with restaurants offering food of at least 20 nations - people of more than 300 (!) different nations live in the city - I stopped counting after visiting the felt 40th restaurant or grill - sometimes a change to mental food makes sense ;-). Well, the german dishes... I recommend for you to visit franconia (Würzburg, Bamberg...) where you find the broadest variety and regional concentration of beer breweries and local dishes in germany so far. If you look into details, all of the former, now merged ethnities in germany have great dishes, i.e. served with pearl barleys and similar cereals not too popular today. For me, Frankurt a.M. offers everything I could ever eat (since more than ten years) - original german (hessian only, quite tasty, very modern, very nice restaurants, varying menus by season, very good), italian (very, very good - best cuisine in the world still - simple, tasty almost like a kiss), thai (embrace the world), vietnamnese (excellent food, very yummy, three restaurants I visited, usually hard to find a seat at lunch time), chinese (three restaurants, tasty dishes), japanese (very tasty, very attractive interior, you should know these), indian (at least three restaurants I visited and enjoy very good dishes - touch the gourmet heart of one of the oldest cultures in the world), bangladeshi, iranian (fantastic food, but usually small portions), you name it. If you want the best wine in the world, then head for rhineland-palatinate, i.e. the weinstraße or (if you like ..) the wine region at the Ahr (Rotweinwanderweg where I come from orginally) or, or or... wine has many good harboring vineyards in germany. Germans love both beers and wine. Wine growing in Rhineland-Palatinate has a written tradition of more than 2000 years - yes, the romans were not only suppressors, but good farmer models to copy some ideas from...

For quality Riesling wines, come to Trier and the region around it. Tip: With Mosel wines, the old adage that 'the best Mosel wines come from the Saar' - still holds true. Often it is wise to pick Saar wines or Mosel-Saar-Ruwer wines over the actual Mosel wines, to try great Riesling. The Saar wines have a slightly more sophisticated balance of acidity versus sweetness. But obviously, some properties along the Mosel also produce excellent wine, if you have a good recommendation. As you will find, the hills around Trier are very steep, and therefore location is everything. A famous hill may have a sunny and well positioned south side, which produces excellent wine, whereas the same hill may have a east or even north side, and the wine is mediocre and sold off cheaply. That makes it very hard for a visitor to look through all this. And that is also why Riesling wine is often known around the world for both top ranked trophies, as well as cheap grocery store wine. I would definitely rely on locals to help you out a bit. Maybe a wine tasting at Oechsle Wein- und Fischhaus would be a great start. (It's better than Kesselstadt, even though Kesselstadt has the best and most prominent location, its food is at times lacking, and it can be a zoo there.) So just wander down the road to Oechsle W&F Haus. Trier has quite a few restaurants which will combine a nice sit down restaurant with good wine and beer selections (Bitburger is the regional beer, a pils beer leaning towards a more bitter flavor and therefore good in combination with homestyle German food choices). In more upscale restaurants, some lighter fish and meat dishes around here reference already the local French and Alsace influences with creamy sauces that pair well with your Riesling. The street food around Trier is nothing to write home about. You can get all the usual, of course. For a lighter, less German lunch or even dinner meal, I usually recommend Der Frankenturm, a mostly Italian place, also in the center of Trier. Good pizza + tons of other stuff. Die Brasserie is also a decent downtown choice. @@ChasingaPlate
