A review of a couple of sets of Wera Hex L-Key sets that I have picked up on the last few months. These sets are honestly in a league of their own as there is not anything else on the market that comes close to quality of these.

So I was setting up a 240V table saw that happens to be metric, and I got sick of the junk hex sets I had picked up from the tractor supply store. So I took a page out of your book and got both sets of wera hex keys. I have them in my hand, and am sure I will be happy with them. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

I honestly wouldn't trust using anything but a hex-plus key, especially for large bolts or bolts that have had thread locker applied. The chances of stripping the bolt are very slim if you use a hex-plus key. Thanks for sharing!

Just picked up the metric set today. They changed the color for the 3mm wrench to purple. Much easier to distinguish versus the set in the video.

Thanks for a good review. I went straight to one of my tool suppliers and ordered two 950 sets online. One short chromed set, and one color coded long arm L set. I have been using them for about two weeks now, and these set redefines hex keys for me (or Allen keys as we call them in Europe). The Hex Plus is really gripping good, and I will never use a regular hex key again. I will give away my other sets.

I have older chromed Wiha L-keys and one of the smaller ones bent in first use. I'm thinking of buying one these Wera sets in the future.

I would definitely look into getting a Wera set. I have set of the Wiha short arm L-Keys that has served me well but are not as good as the Wera ones in my opinion.

Bought a 2,5mm Hex Plus L-Key to get the screws on my RC car loose. Manufacturers love to use high strength loctite on them, so they are practically welded in place. I thought I was gonna brake off the L-Key, bending it by 20-30°, when the first screw came loose; and all of that without stripping or even damaging the hex head.

On the off-chance this wasn't offered up-I believe the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) set comes in the fabric pouch on the off chance they'd actually be used on a car anymore where they may be set on the painted body.

Hi... I bought one of the Wera Hex Plus sets and I absolutely love it. I am now looking for the same end style, but with a T-handle for ease of use. Do you know of any from Wera that has the same technology behind it, but has a T-handle? Thank you.

Only downside I've had with these is that the plastic coating can get in the way when you're trying to get to a recessed fastener
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
I can certainly see that as a possibility, but I haven't yet run into that issue yet. They do sell ones without the plastic coating as well.

I got the standard set for this reason. The plastic looks very nice but I don't see it lasting very long working with chemicals.

After watching your review i ordered a set from Germany through e-bay. Got them today and Wera has changed the color of the 3mm to pink, just like in your SAE-set.

Australia: I have some Knipex and some Wera and I do like them. I just checked the price of the "sub $5.00" set presented in this video and the cheapest price on eBay is AUD$38.84. That's from the UK. It looks like Amazon will ship to Australia for AUD$32.92. Still, that's more than six times the price you report in what I assume is $US. Here we call this the "Australia tax."

Not sure if the cheap set is available in all countries yet, but element14 looks to be a Wera Distributor: au.element14.com/c/tools-production-supplies/tools-hand-workholding/hex-key?brand=wera Prices looks to be about the same after doing the conversion.

Could you see if you can fit both the metric and SAE l key wera sets in the same pouch? Like putting the two corresponding sizes from each in the same slot on the pouch. Just curious, I'm not concerned about having to take a second and look at the actual size when grabbing them

"Plastic coating converts the hex surface to a round surface." It's round stock, isn't it? It's only hex on the ends, and is round stock under the plastic. So the round plastic is covering round metal.... Right?
@GermanToolReviews

Yes, it is essentially a sleeve, probably heat-shrunk onto the shaft. So underneath it is still a hex shank as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the detailed review. I tried to order the textile pouch separately but was told "not available" By any chance, did you get the code #? Additionally: the hey are tempered to 59HRC, the are the stiffest in longitudinal flex compared to all others, including Wiha Bondhus, Allen, Jet... Thank you!

Check out the link in the description for "Empty Storage Pouch" The Wera Part number for the empty pouch is 05671063001. You can also search for 671063 which should give you more results. The first two and last three digits of the Wera part numbers are subject to change, but the middle portion will always refer to that product.

I love my set, it's around 6 years old and doesn't have the color coding, they're all green and only go up to size 6. The holder has a magnet build in however. It's quite a clever system with a plus and a minus to magnetize/demagnetize your L-keys. Not a gimmick at all if you are like me and don't like magnetized tools all the time, only for deeply recessed fasteners. www-de.wera.de/product_detail.html?L=0&file=winkelschluessel_winkelschluessel_fuer_innensechskantschrauben_950_spkl_7b_sm_multicolour&lang=de Only 5 dollars, waw, don't think I can find them that cheap here in Belgium.. Funny how a global economy works.
@GermanToolReviews

Yeah a couple of the holders do have a magnetize feature but not any of the ones I have. Yeah it is surprising that those were that cheap, must be the exchange rate favors the dollar at the time.

What's the problem with using the stainless ones on the AEG tool?
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
You are 'supposed' to use the stainless ones only on stainless fasteners to prevent cross contamination with non-stainless fasteners. But of course you can use them on either as long as you clean them after each use.
@JonDisnard
@JonDisnard 7 жыл бұрын
In addition to avoiding rust cross-contamination, stainless steel is not as hard as the non-stainless type. However it's worth noting that Wera does advertise a cryogenic hardening process for their stainless steel that supposedly achieves similar hardness to their mainline tool alloy.

what happens if you use stainless tools on nonstainless parts?....... cross contamination ok - but what does it do? rust?
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Nothing bad would happen really. The issue is that you might transfer some material from the non-stainless part to a stainless part which could accelerate corrosion on the stainless part.

Is there any reason not to use the stainless ones on every fastener? That's what I've been doing for over a year now with my stainless colour coded set
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 6 жыл бұрын
No reason really other than they will wear out more quickly than the black ones since stainless steel is not going to be as hard. I've never seen any HRC numbers on the Wera L-Keys but generally speaking, Stainless steel is usually no more than C55 while hardened alloy steel is usually in the C55 to C65 range.
@euanroy4673
@euanroy4673 6 жыл бұрын
German Tool Reviews ah ok makes sense, the wera salesman said there was no disadvantage to stainless steel and I can see absolutely no wear, they also get used in damp and rainy conditions so I think I'll stick to just replacing stainless steel ones when they wear out 👍

do wera make any bad tools? I have yet to find one.
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't found one yet either. I think this is because every product I have encounter so far with the Wera name on it is actually made by them. Most companies have a lot of rebranded products in which they can't control the quality as well as an in-house made product. Gedore, Hazet, Wiha Felo etc all have at least a couple of rebranded products.

ah right yeah interesting. I am going to buy these keys to replace my wiha "magic ring" ones. The "magic ring" seems to wear out and renders the ball end next to useless. My wiha screwdrivers seem ok though.

Different uses. I use L-keys often at the shop because I often need to reach low clearance areas when flipping turning inserts or setting up tooling stations on the lathe. Generally I don't really need a ratcheting function in that situation, just something with solid construction and fastener engagement. Hex sockets on the other hand are amazing when I need to work on my car. The extra room in most situations gives me room to fit the socket and a ratchet is always welcome for speedy fastener tightening/removal.

Is it the hex plus on both ends?
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Just the short end. Also, the very small sizes are a regular hex profile. I have found that the hex plus profile works best in the 3,4,5mm range. Larger sizes you really don't get any additional advantage out of it as you would break the screw before you ever striped the hex socket.

It boggles the mind how stupid some people are. I have to work on equipment all the time that others before me have had their hands on and over torquing is common. I am freshly mad because I just had to deal with this. Replacing brakes on a truck. The last person put GOBS of thread locker on the caliper bolts and must have used a five foot snipe/cheater bar. Of course there was no getting them off without making the job way more complicated and utterly unnecessary. The lack of foresight is actually scary. SOmeone with this little knowledge working on safety equipment. If they get something that basic so wrong, who knows what else they butchered.
@readysetsleep
@readysetsleep 6 жыл бұрын
My problem with thread locker is there is no universal marking to say this bolt has threadlocker used on it... Most people and myself included will assume the bolt is seized in hole. The factories like to use the blue 243 loctite on bicycle parts, and I always fear i screwed up the threads with that gummy feeling as the bolt comes out. There is a tutorial on the loctite page about using heat to remove the loctite red which is used for autos and motorcycles. henkeladhesivesna.com/blog/how-to-remove-red-threadlocker/
