Thanks for the great upload! I love this series going way back. STUKA ACE TEN TIMES!!! @6:00, "He claimed 51 aerial victories and the destruction of more than 800 vehicles. "Hans-Ulrich Rudel. He flew 2,530 ground-attack missions exclusively on the Eastern Front, usually flying the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber."

Perfection of aerial rockets rendered dive bombers obsolete. And it wasn’t the horns that scared civilians below, it was the heavy loads of high explosive about to detonate nearby.

Fun fact: the Stuka's famous siren came in several versions and was an add-on from the factory. Most of them didn't come with it as the first versions would stay on constantly, though later siren models could be switched on and off by the pilot. It would actually be a warning for the ground targets and gave them ample time to get under cover. So, most Stuka pilots left the siren off. What you hear in the films is added by the studios later.

In 1944 it was 8 times more dangerous for Luftwaffe pilots to fly against western allies than in the Eastern Front. The lost per flying mission was 0.7% in Eastern Front while staggering 5.4% in western theaters of air war. The way Germans could use obsolete aircraft like Ju 87 Stuka, Heinkel 111 and even pathetic night harassment aircraft in east underlined how low level Soviet Air Force (VVS) was even in 1944-45.

never understood why they kept the fixed landing gear when aerodynamics were hampered and everything else flying by this time had retractable landing gear too. most stuka pilots despised the trumpets of Jericho themselves, especially if they couldn't turn them off at will. ▪☆☆☆▪

How is it the Stuka's sirens didn't sound in level flight?
@ybergik
@ybergik 8 жыл бұрын
The sound depends on the airspeed. Speed at level flight was something like 200-300 km/h, compared to 600 km/h in a dive.

19:12 - it may sound funny, but there is something wrong with these names. In a current German transliteration: *Bruno* for *"B"...* Dora for "D". *Bertha?* Hmm... By the way, the compilation of the footage of German war chronicles - competent. And that's what counts. But various minor sins (distorsions) - well - life! At least, there is something to comment on...

T-34 armor was not week on the back. Unusually, it had similar armor on front, back and rear. It is possible that they mean the engine deck at the back which was flat. And it was sloping. The cast turret had greater variation than the hull. The later T-34/85 reduced the sloping of the side armor to fit the much more effective 3 man turret with a loader that could fire its 85mm gun much faster and the gunner could concentrate on accurate aiming and looking for targets. The commanders could also spend more time in an effective hatch looking for targets and directing the crew. As well as communicate with other tanks. Making the T-34/85 much more efficient than the T-36/76. With much better awareness, target acquisition, higher rates of fire and much faster target adjustment. As the commander and the gunner did not need to reload the gun. The very well sloped T-34/76 turret limited the crew to 2 in the turret. Meaning either the gunner or commander needed to reload the gun. If the gunner reloaded he could lose track of a target. If the commander was loading he had less time to observe for threats and command effectively.
