The Second Schleswig War of 1864 was a pivotal conflict that ignited the flames of unity and reshaped Europe's destiny. Germany, divided and yearning for unification, saw in this clash an opportunity for change.
Led by Otto von Bismarck, Prussia sought to establish a unified Germany under its leadership. The war between Prussia, Austria and Denmark, fueled by territorial disputes, witnessed intense battles and devastation.
Beyond the bloodshed, the war served as a catalyst for German unification, solidifying Prussia's position and laying the groundwork for subsequent conflicts that reshaped Europe.
Ultimately, this momentous conflict heralded an era of change, leading to the birth of the German Empire and leaving an indelible mark on history.

Prince Friedrich Karl was known for caring greatly about the lives of his soldiers, and was reluctant to use them in costly attacks unless he had no other choice(something which contemporary Prussian commanders were critical of, but which I admire him for). But it is still impressive that the Danes stood their ground against such a superior opponent.

Being a Dane interested in History and living about four kilometers from Mysunde (pronounced: Missunde) I have a small, but in my opinion important correction: The new King Christian IX didn't contemplate much as he took over the crown on the 13th of November and signed the November Constitution on the 15 th. The government more or less presented him with an ultimatum: Sign or ...! indicated his forced abdication. Being of the House of Glücksburg he was personaly eager to maintain at least that part of Schleswig as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but his efforts were (as we know) in vain. Besides that I do like your videos very much.

For German speaking viewers: Excellent account on the Danish War gives Theodor Fontane, the novellist, who had a strong interest in military affairs and history. Also fot the Prusso-Austrian War and the German-French War of 1870/71. Fontane is always fair to the utmost toward the enemy, his love for Prussia notwithstanding.

9:50 Besides there also being other interests at play the formal reason for declaring war on Denmark goes as follows. Holstein was part of the German confederation however connected with Schleswig via Personal-Union. Denmark annexing Schleswig therefore de facto also means ending Holsteins independence. This was considered a breach of the Articles of the German Confederation, hence war. The Danish king also probably knew his actions would lead to war yet he was basically peer pressured by parliament and Danish nationalists to sign.

There was no legal personal union between the two duchies by 1863. The duchies where in a personal union with the Danish king, since he was the duke. The union between the two duchies was an early 19th century invention, based of deliberate misinterpretation and exaggeration of a 300+ year old political deal that was no longer in effect. Sleswig was NOT a member of the German confederation and as such it had no legal right to meddle in internal matters within the Danish whole-state. The only justification for war was that this action violated the 1852 London protocols. (But the confederation was not a party to the protocols.) You are also forgetting/ignoring the fact that this action threw Holstein out of the Danish whole-state. You basically eat "German" 1863 propaganda uncritically.

The video is very good, but I don’t understand the last map. Missunde is further north, at the fjord Schlei, than the last shown map indicates. Also konigshügel should be more to the west. The whole front should be further north at this point. Instead you show it to be at Kiel, while Missunde is even north of Eckernförde. I know this exactly as I’m born in Kappeln at the Schlei and grew up near Missunde. Or is there something I got wrong?

Knowing almost nothing beforehand, I feel the political and structural upheaval in Prussia were much more interesting than the battle, which turned out to be a bit of damp squib. Guess I should watch other videos on youtube to learn about the causes and consequences of all those policies and reforms. The quality of the video is great though, thank you.

I feel this video doesn't actually try and talk about any of the complexities regarding the "Schleswig-Holstein question". It was a huge spot of domestic instability in Denmark, being the cause for the first Danish-Prussian war, and also a constitutional issue, which is briefly mentioned as the "November-constitution" Its complexities are well known in Danish history (albeit not by Danish viewers, apparently).

absolutely positive ! being from Nortfrisia I would speak danish now if it weren't for this war and the following unification they tried to danify us before, which led to the first Schleswig War of 1848-1851 Bismark on the other hand, well, a bit too authoritarian for frisian standards, me thinks .....the "social" improvements attributed to him, he only furthered to appease the masses and to not lose control to organized democrats and socialists

I did not know that the great belt and øresunds bridges had been build in 1863... or the city of Esbjerg being in existence... You used a modern map of Denmark... Also you are greatly exaggerating the strength of the Danish fortifications. They where field fortifications for the artillery that was unmanned during peacetime and where not actually finished. The fact that the Prussians could take cover so near the Danish lines show this clearly. And they where no where near as strong as a real fortress. The main danish advantage was the fact that the danish artillery had cover and more importantly, knew the ranges to some of the different point in the terrain.
