With the "es regnet" I remember it as sounding more like "it's raining" compared to "it is raining" I know the logic isn't the same but that helps me to remember when I'm adding unnecessary words.

Another word you can use as a workaroung is "am" it functions sorta like the word "on" in "i am on the (activity of doing x)", so you'll also need to use "sein" (Careful, very irregular word) and the noun version of the activity. "Ich bin am Lesen" I am reading "Er ist noch am Kochen" He is still cooking Funnily, you can even combine the too. "Ich würde gerne helfen, aber ich bin gerade am Arbeiten" I'd like to help, but i'm currently working

From what I’ve been reading, the Präteritum is used in written German and the Perfekt was used in spoken German. But, I have been seeing that that is not strictly true, so how does one know when to use which?
@Germanonlinegym
@Germanonlinegym Жыл бұрын
We do use some verbs in Präteritum in spoken language (e.g. modal verbs - konnte, wollte, musste, etc.) or verbs like wissen (ich wusste) or denken (ich dachte). But in general it's perfectly fine if you stick to what you wrote

Ich bin Deutscher und deine Videos gefallen mir echt gut. Ich finde, dass das Aufzeigen dieser Unterschiede auch den Deutschsprachigen helfen kann, ein besseres Verständnis für die englische Sprache zu entwickeln. Hast du mal in Deutschland gelebt? Deine Aussprache ist wirklich ganz ordentlich! Respekt. Man hört es aber manchmal an deiner "weichen" Aussprache der Konsonanten. So wie ein Deutscher es auch nie wirklich ganz hinbekommt "dog" statt "doK" zu sagen. "Auslautverhärtung" nennt sich der Begriff für dieses Phänomen, glaube ich.

@germanonlinegym - In the last example in english, "I was doing something." is equivilant in German to I did something. How is the level of completion conveyed? I ask because "I did something." in English indicates completion not just that you had started to do something. PS: I agree with the many other comments on how helpful your presentation style is. I think these lessons can help get from A1 to solid A2 or B1.
@Germanonlinegym
@Germanonlinegym Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot or your feedback! As for your question, the completion is not a problem in German (did). The challenge is to express ongoing actions (doing) because there is no special verb tense for that as in English.

I remember hearing a turn of phrase when I was living in Bonn more than 55 years ago which is relevant: am + infinitive. For example, 'als er ankam, war ich noch am arbeiten'. Does anyone else know of this? Clearly it was regional and non-standard, and it may well have died out as well by now. But it did exist.
@jonathanlange1339
@jonathanlange1339 3 жыл бұрын
It still exists. I would rather say "Ich bin am Arbeiten" instead of "Ich arbeite gerade" (I am working). And for "He was cooking in the kitchen" I would say "Er war in der Küche am Kochen". I think this is easier to learn for english speakers because you use just "am" and the regular form of the verb.
@jonathanlange1339

But I don't know how widespread it is in Germany to say it like this.

"Ich studiere jetzt" sounds almost like an announcement: Now I am going to study (implying: please don't disturb me for the next hour or so.) - In a different context it may mean: I am studying now, while a year ago I still had a temporary job (or whatever). Like: "Hallo, lange nicht mehr gesehen. Hast du immer noch diesen Job?" - "Nein, ich studiere jetzt." ("Hi, haven't seen you for a long time. Do you still have this job?". - "No, I am now studying (in the sense of: I am going to university now)."
