It's so true. Warren was incomparable. He'd died when I was a little kid. I spent my youth listening over and over to him doing this scene. God, there will never be anyone like him again.

Warren is THE greatest Verdi baritone, his ringing top is thrilling!

I’d always considered Warren’s Prologue from Pag. to be the greatest exemplar of his greatness. After listening to the Rigoletto aria, I’m persuaded that this does not take second to any other. Warren stands unique in this role with his passion, his soaring line, and fatherly despair. In some ways his voice bookended Jussi Bjoerling’s albeit as a baritone. Warren’s voice has a celestial tear throughout the piece, scintillating in the upper register, and enveloped in a pleading tenderness in the quieter portions. He made you feel what he felt, on every note.

The pain in Rigoletto's voice as he desperately tries to locate his daughter is so moving that one must weep for him. Rigolleto was Warren's finest role. Many thanks for posting!

Magnificent!!! You can really hear the pain in his voice for his daughter's abduction... Excellent italian diction, except for that "che? Adesso non ridete?"(What? Now you don't laugh anymore?) where you can hear his american "soul". Bravisssimo!

Para mí gusto el mejor Barítono de todos los tiempos
@BellaFirenze14 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of a Callas masterclass, during which she (in vain) tries to coach a baritone in this difficult scene. Warren fulfills all the demands of this scene, and then some. Such attention to the words! I never heard him live, but I have seen the other baritones mentioned. Merrill and Milnes had glorious voices, but (Merrill in particular), never brought this character to life as Warren does here. He is only 34 years old here, and in top form. Perhaps only Tito Gobbi comes close.

His voice sounds much better than 10 years later--more focused. Did he change his technique over the years?

@GermanOperaSinger Indeed. I was referring to interpretation and characterization only. A great artist, Gobbi did not -for my taste- have a beautiful voice. Certainly not like Warren's.

@johnfalstaff22709 ай бұрын
You are wrong. I do not like opinions underscored by the legendary fame of previous performers. Why the modern singers cannot be famous? They can If they are good. They will certainly enter the Heaven of Legends. To be honest, I deeply appreciate Ruffo and Stracciari or Granforte but non Italian Warren beated them with a beauty of his voice as Swede Jussi Bjorling easily competed with all Italian tenors.
