Those distracting disco lights have gone out of fashion, finally!
Ocurrence date: June 19th 2013, (Friesenplatz), Cologne, Germany
Filmed by: ArtificialArtist
English:
I couldn't resist to film it, it was just so damn hypnotising to watch. In one way, traffic lights are a good thing, of course, but in another they do make us less wary of the traffic around us, don't they?
btw i don't just film crossroads, i also occasionally make music. Listen in, if you like! :)
iTunes:
itunes.apple.c...
Deutsch:
Was denkt ihr darüber? Erfahrungen? Meinungen?
In eigener Sache: Ich stehe nicht nur an Kreuzungen rum, ich mache auch, unter anderem, Musik. Hört doch mal rein wenn ihr mögt :)

this is pretty easy to explain: Germany has rules for everything. In case the traffic lights fail, there are signs to indicate who has to yield and in case there wouldn't be signs, the right-before-left rule comes into action. Pretty simple why this is not ending in chaos. Before anyone asks: Right-before-left-rule means: When you are approaching an intersection and there is a car coming from your right, you have to yield. If a car is coming from the left, they have to yield. If cars are coming from opposite directions, whoever wants to turn left has to yield. final case: if there are cars on every part of the intersection, whoever comes first, can go first, or when in doubt: people will just communicate via hand sings who can go first. It really is fuckin easy.

Nope, this has nothing to do with right-before-left. This is an intersection. There's right-before-left for everyone so nobody could drive. Which is why there are priority signs, which work when the traffic lights go out for a moment. Here we see really great coordination of people with priority waiting to make sure every branch of the intersection is able to move. This is not done by right-before-left or signs but by thinking human beings who know that everybody else also needs to reach their destiny. It is really awesome to watch. But it doesn't happen too often even in Germany, this is exceptional. Usually there'd be police regulating traffic after a few moments.

I like the fact that you absolutely ignored the content of my post and gave me a lesson about something I already wrote. And for the right-before-left rule: When there are cars from all directions, the StVO (germany's traffic law) says that drivers should communicate by handsign who should drive first. Do you really think nobody could drive in a situation like that? By the way: You will never see a cop regulating traffic in germany, there are traffic signs at basically every intersection.

Amazing isn't it. In most cities everyone is to stressed out and battling for every last centimetre. It only works when, ones in a while, someone on the main road leaves a gap. When you have a string of cars in front and a long string behind ....... It is the polite thing to do, not a regulation. Combined with everyone following the rules. Look ahead. NO overtaking a car stopped at a pedestrian crossing. NO blocking the intersection. (if the road ahead is jammed, don't even enter the intersection) Be prepared to stop. (that means, slow the Fr@ck down. no crossing the intersection at warp speed) Keep you distance. If you need to turn off in two blocks, you might want to move to the proper lane now. The turn signal is to announce INTENT, not a Divine Command from God to make a hole because you could not be bothered to plan ahead. (don't be a Vettel) And for Russians; no left turns from the slow lane or right turns from the fast lane.

yes actually its true, in fact in this video it doesn't even look like there are no traffic signals at this spot.. when with traffic lights is like this on our roads then imagine what happens without traffic lights: massive jams because everyone trying to escape from everywhere at the same time and thus everyone blocking each other at the same time.

In Germany we have road signs as backup if the traffic signal is not working. That's why it is working like shown in the video.

And who cares? Aren't police allowed to take a look for few minutes and drive off? There was no crashes and accidents. If this was filmed in USA, people will crash. That's because US people don't understand intersections with turned off traffic lights, they get freaked out since they aren't flashing yellow or red.

Edited so things are more understandable. You learn that in driving school in germany : (Important to notice, the part that is guidlined by law is 1. - 3. the rest is what most people learn and should be taught by every driving instructor) 1. Orders from officials (police etc.) when they assume official position (eg. when the police lights and/ or sirens are on) 2. Signs + Lights 3. Level of urgency (ambulance, firefighters, police cars) 4. mass transportation like busses go first - not an official rule but something that supports the fluent process of guiding the traffic. 5. right before left => Important rule that always is in place : people by foot or bike need to be looked after. Always keep an eye out for children and animals. Actually we have so many guidelines, we could eliminate most of our lights today.

KingMacintosh You are pinning all the blame on refugees which is hateful. you'd rather spend your energy hating on others than understand the bigger picture of why refugees are refugees in the first place. Anyway, onto topic, to be a good driver, you need to be willing to give way and think about others before yourself otherwise this road you see in germany would not work because if the drivers were full of hate and don't care about others or how their actions can hurt others, they would flip each other off, floor it through the intersection, it would be chaos. apologies for the generalization to say you can't be a good driver. perhaps you are a very good driver, but the fact you decided to 'flip us off' in a youtube comment by calling us retarded european and then blaming the refugees is kind of like flipping people off and shows alot of hatred that you could have a tendency to do the same while you drive. so although people may have good driving 'skills', you need to be a good person to be a good 'driver' in order for people as a whole to allow trafficless road usage to work. have a good day sir

At night the less important intersections have their traffic lights either deactivated or in flashing yellow to signalize that the secondary traffic signs are enforced. In other words, the traffic signs you see at the traffic lights are really just for that purpose. We so traffic lights to coordinate high density traffic... not because we couldn't live without them.

In Germany we have a simple Prioritylist. 1. Trafficlights 2.When there are no Trafficlights or dont work the signs are dictating the laws( you can see the yellow with white outline sign on the trafficlightpole, this means that street has the right of way 3. When there are no Trafficlights or they dont work and there are no signs, the street coming from your right has the right of way. (when there is a crossing and there are 4 cars on each lane creating a loop of law 3. you signal someone with you hand that you let him pass, like an intelligent human beeing you should be).

Of course you can get in serious trouble for speeding or minimum distance infringements, however the authorities will try to collect from you, or confiscate your drivers licence first (In fact it costs at least as much as the first test to regain your licence). Going to jail for bad driving is mainly relevant in case you are causing personal damgage and/or are dui repeatedly.

As a german who drove in the US, it's absolutely chaos and horrible, there seems to be no manners on the highway nor in street traffic, the drivers always seem like they are dreaming or sleeping, they don't use any logic in traffic. Think about it, we have the Autobahn, the left lane on the Autobahn is usually occupied by people driving between 160km/h and 300km/h (100mph - 186mph) without safety issues at all because people watch out and drive with focus. In the US it's the complete opposite! Even the americans here in Germany (When i drive to France i always pass US military bases like Ramstein and Kaiserslautern, alot of americans driving there and they still drive totally uncoordinated despite being in another country with logical traffic rules.

Yup, in Switzerland that would have worked as well, but there you would hear people yelling across the street "explaining the rules of traffic". One pedestrian standing next to the curbstone and all cars would stop, waving and giving lights to that person in anticipation of him crossing the street. Then after they dealt with that they would do the same accordingly to each another to indicate who "goes first", religiously following the "right of way" rule. None would volunteer to go first, unless it is in accordance with the "from right goes first" rule.

I think it works that great because (I suspect) there must be other intersections nearby with traffic lights working. The cars come in bundles, then there's a gap, giving the cars from the other roads a chance to drive on. But nevertheless nice to see people can handle this without too much of a chaos, and even pedestrians can cross the road in a pretty relaxed way. I like it how the police checks the situation, then simply leaves.

Actually I see this a lot even with traffic lights working...

I need to travel more to see how USA really is? Here in scandinavia we are set with the impression that it is a very grand country with a lot of happiness. Is that even true?

All traffic signs, which are installed above or right next to the lights themselves, are there, to be used, when the lights are switched off. It's very simple.

It's not very simple. You are correct about it in theory. But that's not what's happening in the video. If your observation was correct, only the main street vehicles would have moved and the yield street cars wouldn't have moved at all.

@@ArtificialArtist Yeah, well, I'm German, made my licence in Germany (more than 20y ago) and "main street" is quite difficult pronounced. Cause, what we see here, is the crossing of *two* "main streets" ;) ... But still: it *IS* easy. Except, if you're not used to it ...
