Sandra Bullock was born in Germany. Her mother was german so she can speak german fluently. In fact she went to a german school the first years of her life. So she knew exactly what she said. She thanked her mother for preaching her her whole life to always be original. And she was amazed that a person like her is able to be on this stage and to get an award. She told that she was a waitress, a hairdresser for dogs and so on and that all these jobs took her to where she's now.

Americans get criticized so much for not speaking other languages and when one does, the accent is totally picked apart. Granted, Sandra Bullock has more experience than just learning German; however, the comments here would make one scared to try to speak another language. I studied German for many years. My experiences in Germany and Austria were that the people were very complimentary and helpful with speaking German. If I said something that got the message across but I know had mistakes, they would still tell me how good my German was. It's a shame those aren't the majority of people who comment on here. I guess in every country, it is mostly the nasty trolls who comment. Thanks to the Germans who did defend her language. I would love to be able to speak German "that badly."

Translation: Thanks. Thanks. Man! I am nervous, because my speech lies on the floor over there (actually she said "Sprache" which translates to "language", which makes no sense in this context, but I guess she meant a piece of paper with her "speech" = "Rede"). Okay. What great times we live in! At some point in the past I was a waitress, then I was a housecleaner, then I was a disco dancer, then I was a hairdresser for dogs. Who could ever guess, that all these jobs would lead me to this stage? - applause by the audience- But that is the best proof for this: Today's audience is that tolerant, even people like me get a chance. My mother always told me: "Be original, Sandra!" and that drove me crazy as a child, but now I understand: My mother was ahead of her time. Phew! And thank God she taught me that mentality, before she passed away to other worlds. So thank you Doctor Burda (founder of the award), thank you to my family, thank you Carolina, thank you Christina, Gabriela, Barbara, Maxi - go to bed now! Aunt Christel, uncle Heinz, thank you! Actually her German is not perfect. Every native speaking German person can hear that it is not her first language. Still pretty good. I am German/American myself btw but in my case, German is the 1st language. Americans have a hard time figuring out where I'm from. Funny story: I freaked out some German tourists in NY a few yrs back. They needed directions and I replied in perfect German which was a total shock to them (my dad is black so it was even more of a surprise to them) ...

@@guidotillmann7765 I think you mean native-born American. Native American does not apply to her. That means someone with ancestry indigenous to the americas, which she is not. @Anthony Meoli, Most U.S Americans can speak American (dialect), but many cannot read or speak English. Relying upon the Carnegie institute changes (phoneticisation) of the language to accommodate language learning for America's early Francophiles, Spanish, and Indigenous et. al meant / means that many U.S. Americans do not understand rules pertaining to vowel shifts. That is why absolute native English speakers can read books in Français irrespective of whether they speak the language. That is also why learning, say, Français takes longer for U.S. Americans.

Amazing she is really fluent. Both her Grammar and her pronounciation are almost perfect, with a nice mixture of bavarian and american accent. She only made one obvious mistake at the beginning of her speech. She translated the word speech into the closest related german word "Sprache". To make it more tricky the verbs "sprechen" and "reden" are synonyms and both mean "to talk" or "to speak" but the nouns have different meanings. "Sprache" means "language" or in an other context the abiity to speak and "Rede" means "speech". I think in this case "Sprache" is a false friend and it is quite easy for a non native speaker to make that kinde of mistake. Who cares, I would be more than happy if my English was that good.

I am so happy that Sandra has retained so much of her heritage. America is such a melting pot ( as they say ). But, many Americans have German ancestry. My grandfather on my mother's side is of German descent. He has German first and last names. I was lucky enough to be stationed in Northern Bavaria ( the Nürnberg area ) for 3 years from 1960. I only picked up a little German language during that time. Much of it so called G.I. German. Like: Mox Nix = It's nothing. Wie geht's ? = How's it going ? Mox Schnell ! = Faster ! Etc. I think Mox came from the Bavarian dialect.

+valberm sie meinte "Rede". Ne Ansprache ist nochmal was anderes (auch wenns recht ähnlich ist) und wird seltener benutzt. das war einfach nur ein Verwechsler, sie hat nicht das "an" vergessen.

She was raised in Nuremberg, Germany, where she lived for twelve years, her mother was German, this explains her fluent German

It is nice to hear her voice in german language. She speaks very good german. And she is not too shy to tell us that she even once worked as a cleaning lady. This makes her sympathetic and she does not seem arrogant. Angenehm ihre Stimme in deutscher Sprache zu erleben. Ihre berufliche Vergangenheit macht sie sympatisch und sie ist sich nicht zu fein, das ohne Probleme grade auch noch bei so einem Anlass zu erwähnen und bedankt sich dafür, dass solche Leute, wie sie, auch eine Chance bekamen. Alle Achtung vor soviel Bodenständig- und Ehrlichkeit Sandra.

Sandra Bullock lived in Germany and Austria until she was a teenager and her mother is German. I never understand why people are surprised that she speaks fluent German!

That does surprise me. Arnold Schwarzenegger has partially forgotten his language and speaks with a strong American accent. And he hasn't lived in the USA as long as Sandra B.
