As someone trying to learn german, it felt great to realize I could just close my eyes, listen and actually understand everything you said/everything you talked about. Despite not understanding every single word I never found myself lost or confused about what you were saying which feels like a (for me) major milestone, which is very motivating for me in that it feels like I'm actually getting somewhere. @@allinwarda5894 Not very long, I learnt a little bit in school but very little, just like Jay said in the video I just wasn't very interested for some reason. For maybe 1-2 years now I've just made the habit of looking up german words that seem recurrent in the language that I don't understand. And I keep doing that until they kind of stick. I sometimes try to listen to german media of different sorts, podcasts etc. Even though it's often very tiring for me (kind of exhausting for the brain), sometimes I understand most of what's being said and sometimes I almost don't understand anything at all. Now I've only just started using duolingo and have practised a little bit every day the past week or so. The more I learn the more motivated I seem to get which is nice. Also I'm from Sweden and know english fluently which I feel has given me a sort of head start, since german is a language that's a little bit inbetween english and swedish.

As a Dutch speaker that speaks German fluently, the way your sentences flow is incredibly impressive. Also the fact that you put a random “ja” as a filler word shows that you’re comfortable. Of course over time your accent will improve, but it sounds kinda nice tbh, it has something of a historic German-American feel to it. Think Pennsylvanian Dutch. My advice it to listen to natural spoken German in street interviews and consume youth related YT channels and news like DW Deutsch to build up vocab! You’re amazing.

If you can it also helps to find a German friend. I haven’t quite reached the point I can construct many sentences in German but I have been studying for less than a month and I already know probably about a few hundred words and am learning many new words everyday, still have to work on my word endings and when to use Die, Der, Das. Videos like these motivate me to continue studying german and not to give up. If you inspect it closer, German is a very logical language and it's like Lego, bit by bit and you create a castle, something to build on, plus it's similar to English the more I study it. German is a pretty language and it deserves much more love and recognition, and it's never too late to learn a new language. Have a nice day Jay!

I’ve started my German class 3 days ago, and while I definitely can’t understand this without subtitles, it’s cool to see how I can kinda piece together some things here and there. Like 2018, sehr, etc… Hopefully I can understand more without subtitles after this semester.

Hey mate! I'm Fred from Milan, and I really wanna thank you for share this video with us! I already speak 3 languages but I have to say that German was always kinda a big goal for me, maybe because I know more direct latin languages so German always looked so far or completely a crazy idea to jump in. I just starting to take my very little first steps and you know, sometimes the whole project seems so unreachable but as you said, the motivation is everything. Thanks again for share your journey with German and to show us that is Possible! I found it so inspirational! 🤙🤙🤙

I have just started to learn German for my Goethe exam. I am from India and while I do speak two languages it still feels very intimidating as of now. I am so glad I watched your video. It really serves the purpose. Seeing you speak like this made me feel like I too can learn to speak. Thank you Jay!!

i started learning german last month because we had a foreign exchange student that had come from germany. i’ve been using duolingo and practicing as much as i can, and you’ve really inspired me! the only issue i have is that i have a southern accent, and so it makes pronouncing words difficult for me. today i managed to have a conversation with the guy talking about my cats, and he pointed out i accidentally referred to my tomcats as ‘feminine male cats’ lmfao. to be honest, i think german is a little easier than spanish, which really motivates me to continue practicing.

I watched this video a couple years ago and was only reading the subtitles. Now I can understand what you’re saying or read the subtitles and think in my head what I would say in German and it’s mostly the same as what you say. It’s hard to feel proud of my own progress because it has been so slow over years but it’s finally at a tipping point where I feel that I can do something with this language now. I went to school up to B1.1 and hope to continue again when I have time. Thanks for this video.

I'm 48 Northern Irish born and raised . Though I now live and work in England . Your experience has further inspired me . I have always been fascinated by multilingual people their fluid ability to switch between languages. So mid September2021 I finally chose Deutsch als meine erste zweite sprache ! You have totally inspired me that I will get there with persistent effort. Subscribed 100% Best of luck to you leben und lernen in Deutschland !

"face-to-face" heißt auf deutsch "Angesicht zu Angesicht" But I think it is not really used anymore. But everyone would understand. Great video :) EDIT: Oh, I think the best way to say "talk to people face-to-face" is "mit Leuten persönlich sprechen". Keep rocking!

Im not confident enough to comment in german, but the fact that i was able to follow the story (while multitasking!) gives me so much hope. I took 3 years of german in high school in the US, which isnt exactly known for teaching foreign language effectively. The content was very limited, but i did have the privilege of being taught by a native speaker. I tried maintaining and improving it on Duolingo for awhile and got close to maybe B1, but i haven't touched german in over 5 years since there isn't really any german speaking community here. I just got back on Duolingo to get started again (i know its not sufficient, but im in school full time and working part time), and im genuinely motivated to move forward. Not feeling any pressure to learn is surprisingly helpful. Thank you for sharing your story!

German is a language I've had an interest in for a while now, but other than Duolingo, I have no real idea how to learn it. It's nice that just listening to this video and reading the subtitles, I am able to understand some words and sentences from what little German I have taught myself on and off over the years.

Mate, I find your video very helpful because I recently moved to Germany, without knowing the language (ja, ich bin verrückt 😅) and it is freaking hard to find a job here. I have a Batchelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering too and I am attending a Deutschkurs since September. Even though I have 1.5 years of experience working in the field, I get rejected everywhere I apply for a job 😂. It's hard, but I bet, after my german improves I'll succeed. Ich wünsche allen, die Deutsch lernen, alles Gute! 😁

Your accent sounds perfect. I am still working on my German, it takes time. I was in Germany in 2019 and my friends girlfriend couldn’t speak English so I was forced to speak the language. By the end I was able to speak and understand a lot more in just 3 weeks. Viel Gruß aus Nue Seeland ❤

You probably know more than you think. You can work through text and audio to gain more understanding. KZbin is a great source of content to immerse in. Once the understanding is there you just need to practice speaking with somebody (or practice thinking out loud).
