Im using duolingo for german and man! I know some things. But they just expect you to know all of this without teaching you anything! So i dont know why things are the way they are grammar wise! I just learned what pairing goes with what by drilling it over and over. Wanted to expand on this! So thank you!

This is what Laura calls a ‘double nominative’. The verb ‘ist’ is acting like an equal sign. Both the noun before the verb and the noun after the verb will take the nominative case because they are referring to the same thing. The little child is a boy.
