Dude, if you've had mentioned you were going to the castles again, I might have been able to set you up to a privat tour through Schloss Hohenschwangau (the yellow one next to Neuschwanstein, and in my opinion the more impressive one on the inside, since it was actually inhabited for 80 years). I used to be a tour guide there and still have good connections to the people working there. And I still live less then 1km from the castles, I can literallly see my house in one of your drone shots^^!

I'm an Ami, and have visited that castle about 200 times (work). I hate going there. Tourist trap. Beautiful though. Sure wish one could add pictures here (I got lots). Glad you guys walked up instead of the horses or the bus. For many years, they had nighttime concerts inside that castle. Always in September. Those concerts, I miss dearly....

I visited last summer and I think the scenery around the castles are just as beautiful if not more so than the castles themselves. Just look at the drone shots, the green pastures all around in the valleys. Just takes you back to a simpler place and time.

I came across your channel back in December when I was youtubing things about Schwäbisch Hall. I was born there in 1991 and my family moved to California not long after. I went to see the town with my own eyes for the first time 4 months ago and spent my 27th birthday there. I stayed in a spot along the river for a few days and went to a few of the places you mentioned which were pretty cool. Jealous you got to go over the bridge at Neuschwanstein, it was closed due to the snow when I went. Just thought I'd give a shoutout and a thank you for the cool videos and the tidbits of travel info you give out!

Pilot almike you would not believe how many amazing cars there are in this town. Porches all over the place. But not just that. There is a Lamborghini dealership next to my doctors office. Their shop also works on Mclarens. Mercedes Benz are the most common car here, like Ford. BMW is common too. When I got off the airplane and went into the parking garage I paused amazed at what was parked there. Also, there are hardly any Nissans, Hyundai, or Toyota cars here. I guess it’s just too far to ship them. But believe it or not the German’s like Fords. However, they are mini cars, not available in the USA. It’s fascinating.

Pilot almike I followed my husband for his job. We came from Waynesville. The area has an annual car show put on every summer by the Cave State Cruisers. It’s wonderful and you would like it if you like historical autos and muscle cars. All the retired military guys working in their garages produce some very pretty work. And these same guys put them in every small town parade. America at its best. I’m a fan because my dad was always working on an old Mustang and then selling them when he was done. Me, personally know nothing about cars, other than to look at the skill and labor that goes into their restoration. I admire the hard work and beauty of the results.

I just discovered your content about a week ago. I just want to say thank you! Thank you for the flood of childhood memories rushing back. As a child in the late 60 and thru the 70 my father was stationed at American Embassies all over Europe. Since it was so hard to make it back to the states for one week of vacation and back we would spend most of our vacations in Bavaria. It's where I first put on ice skates, where I first went skiing, went swimming in the Eibsee. I've been watching lots of videos about Bavaria lately as I am planning a visit out there soon. Yours are by far the best videos I've watched. Especially the one with your mom at the Christmas shop. So many memories of Christmas in Garmisch.

We were skiing in Austria and driven past the castles(well nearby) dozens of time, but never visited. After I told my wife about this video we decided to stop there on our lost day. So we parked at the Lechfall in Füssen and walked around Schwansee and to both castles and then back (around 14-15 km). So a great Inspiration. Thanks

Just wow - absolutely stunning soaring drone shots of Schloss Neuschwanstein. Equally impressive is the background music you have synched up with your footage. Your musicality is always evident in all your videos; love the way how you match/edit the different rhythms and tempo to the shots, as well as the use of musical phrasing and changes in dynamics (although you are more of a forte guy than pianissimo 😉). Intelligent storytelling, artistic eye and innate musicality all contributes to the wonderful high quality of your vlogs.

Something that, at least in my opinion, is as impressive as Schloss Neuschwanstein is Burg Elz ( Castle Elz ). I have visited many castles in Germany and this one is my favourite one. Also driving with the car next to the Rhine from Bingen to Koblenz is very impressive because there are so many castles. ( I think this part of the Rhine has the highest density of castles world wide [ There is even a Website it is called Rheinburgenweg ] )

You were lucky that you got tickets, to get up there. The last time I've been there, was during the summer holidays in 2014 with my 8 year old daughter. It was a rainy day, like nearly the whole summer. Our hotel we stayed in, near Kempten, was disappointing and I always had to think about things to do with my 8 year old girl. It wasn't easy, because it was hard to get internet at that hotel. So one day I decided to get her some Bavarian culture. We arrived at noon, but there was already a very long queue at the ticket counter. A woman behind us went to the counter to ask, how long we would have to wait and the answer was: the are already too much people in the castle or waiting to get in, so before 5 p.m we would not get any tickets. I was disappointed, but my daughter was happy. She wasn't interested at all visiting "old stones". Luckily we found an indoor ropes course (Klettergarten), so our day was saved.

No wonder that lots of Germans haven't visited Neuschwanstein in a lifetime. I've been there twice and was disappointed both times. The castle court and surroundings are packed with box offices which spoil the impresssion of a castle, tons of tourists (I know I've been a part of that problem), the castle has no history except for the crazy King Ludwig II in his mind somewhat lived in the past and in 1886 (!) tried to rebuild the medieval times. He used that castle as a kind of weekend cottage. He stayed there all in all for about six or seven days. Everything looks like a movie set and in a way built in somewhat 1:2 scale. For example the Sängersaal (singer's hall) is rebuild after that in the Wartburg (another famous German castle where Martin Luther translated the bible from Latin into German), but way smaller. Everything looks artifical (which it is). I won't stand in line for hours for another time to see that crap.

Nalf, last night I saw your 2016 video on the Schloss and my little brain went BOOM. (Actually, it went F*CK!) I watched the vlog a bunch of times and wrote on it there, adding some historical factoids after a little research to give it some context. It’s an architectural monstrosity but just FABULOUS. You just gotta love it. It’s like the first time I saw the Mormon Temple rising over the beltway in Washington, DC times 10 or more. Part of the fun with the Mormon Temple is the absurdity of its setting. (For those that have never seen the Temple, it looks like something out of the Wizard of Oz. But instead of a poppy field it rises over an 8 or 10 lane highway. Someone even scrawled “Free Dorothy“ on the highway wall in front of it.) But unlike the Mormon Temple the setting for your Schloss is just magnificent. Someone in the comments gave a suggestion for 2 more we should see, so I gotta check them out. Thanks for taking us here Nalf!

Germany is estimated to have had 25.000 Castles and Fortresses. Only about 2.500 of them are still standing. The others got damaged, got abandoned, got deconstructed, or became a ruin over time. But the 2500 remaining castles make Germany the country with the large amount of castles in the world. Schloss Neuschwanstein is quite young.

I'm Bavarian and I haven't even been there. Gotta say, I'm a little jealous. By the way, do you know anything about King Ludwig II who built it? He was in-sane. He built all this crazy shit, was probably mentally ill and secretly gay. There are so many myths around him. Doesn't help that he died under mysterious circumstances and either drowned himself or got drowned in a famous lake. His enemies expected the people to turn against him after his death, because he spent so much money on so much luxurious boisterous architecture, while the people saw little of that money. But the contrary happened. The people were pretty impressed. And they are to this day. We Bavarians sometimes talk about "the King" as if he was still alive and reigning. Listen, we love democracy as much as the next, but at heart we'll always have this fairy tale king that kind looms over everything like a guardian angel. It's so ridiculous but I love it 😂😂😂

Schloss Neuschwanstein. The place number one in Germany where you have more American and Japanese people than Germans. Can confirm that. I am in the minority group of Germans who have been there. And the places like Yosemite National Park 🏞 the USA has are more spectacular. The Alps have it’s own appeal, but when I remember the visit in Yosemite compared to the visit of the castle, Yosemite was much more mind blowing. So it is the clear winner.

What most people do not know is that it's seen as an artificial castle in Germany. It's not old at all. It was built in the 19th century (1860s ?) by that weird Bavarian king Ludwig II. It might be famous yet not really respected by many Germans as a true castle. It's a touristic attraction for foreigners... you might perceive it as a kind of old version of Disney Land.

You should visit Festung Hohensalzburg. It't the largest fortress in middle-europe, nearly 1000 years old AND you could buy me a beer since i live there.

Dear Nalf, I' German and I've never been therem though I spent lots of holidays not far from there in Austria. Partially because my parents tried to avoid the masses of tourists in summer time. But there's another cause. We have so many genuine castles and ruins in our country (especially in the Palatinate, where I'm from), so Neuschwanstein is somewhat "fake" for us - because it was built on the the romanticising fantasies of a mad king, who ruined his kongdom's finances because of it, because this king was the king of Bavaria and his actions affected directly my ancestors as the Palatinate was part of the kingdom of Bavaria. The special thing about Neuschwanstein Castle is that it is NOT particularly old. It is a romanesque revival palace, where the insane Bavarian King Ludwig II realized his ideas of a romantic castle.

I live in Bavaria. And I must confess to my shame: I have never been to Neuschwanstein Castle before. It would interest me already, but 2-3 hours line up, for 40 min. tour .... uh ...no.

Why don't visit Schloss Linderhof or Herrenchiemsee (on an island in middle of the Chiemsee, which is very beautiful too) instead? Both are King Ludwig castles as well and I consider Linderhof even more pretty!

Neuschwanstein is pretty amazing. But in reality it is not a real castle, it is a fancy mansion, as you mentioned. Check out Schloss Linderhof. It is an other mansion from King Ludwig II, not far away from Neuschwanstein. Many castles in Germany got rebuild and remodeled in the 19. century. Only a few castles are original and those that are not modified are usually ruins.

There are a lot of castles/palaces in Germany and all over Europe. I studied in Hannover and the University is in the Welfenschloss. So the motivation to see "just another castle" isnt as high for Germans as people coming from far away. Especially if its THE castle posting as an tourist attraction.

Did spend 45 of my 49 years so far just 150 km away from this place, but havent there been either. I rather watch a squirrel eating nuts for five hours then feeling like an alien among five million chinese, japanese and american tourists watching a bunch of old stones...

Like somebody else said you must visit the North of Germany. You will feel like in another Country. Hahaha. Interesting historical Buildings are in Bremen. The Schnoor, the Böttcherstraße, the Dom, the Rathaus whith the stature of Roland at the historical Marketplace. Everything is right in the Center. Not to Forget the Bürgerpark, a big park whith the most beautiful landscape and free running deers.
