In the world of armored warfare, size can often be a game-changer, but what if a small, compact vehicle could deliver a powerful punch? Enter the tankette, a tracked armored vehicle that resembles a mini tank, roughly the size of a car. Among these, Germany's Wiesel tank stands out as a remarkable example. Despite its small stature compared to other German tanks, the Wiesel packs a significant punch and proves to be an exceptionally formidable machine. Curious about what makes this tiny tank so deadly? Stay tuned!

I like the weasel. For personnel reasons. I was a drafted airborne soldier in 1998. I can remember a larger exercise where I was part of the forward component of the airborne logistics company, consisting of a captain, a sergeant and two privates. I was one of the two privates, so anyone can imagine about how the nightshift guards in that 4-person troop would have been arranged 😂.. While my buddy and me where trying to sort out how we would split up ourselves throughout the night, a weasel appeared the scene, stopped some 30 meters beside us close to the treeline and started to prepare for the night. We asked them whether they intended to stay there and they knew immediately what the situation was. They said: "guys, go to sleep! We've got night vision, we are gonna see more than you anyway!". Since that day: friendship and honor to the glorious, beloved comrades from the one and only Fallschirmpanzerabwehrbataillon 272.

In the era of drone warfare, smaller, faster, cheaper tanks might be the future. Imagine one of these with a box full of drones in the back. It can carry a big antenna, so the range would be better than infantry drone systems.

I was Commander of a San-Wiesel for some years, during my time with the paratroopers. Loved this little war-pony. I think the sucess of the wiesel is due to the restricktion of it being light enough to be transported in an air vehicle. So the designers couldn´t - in good german fashion - overengineer that project to death. The wiesel has everything he need´s, not more, not less, as best as light build gets. Perfect!

Good Point, but in my opinion its more a product of an era when most german equipment was very well balanced. Marder , Leo the whole ecosystem northern plane aka peak bundeswehr was and is still very good equipment thats works well in an combined arms approach. The Wiesel 1 in combination with the CH 53 is an excellent combination for flexible air mechanized operations in contested but confined space. The CH and Wiesel are both pretty short ranged in their movements but thats not what they were designed for. Long story short, the concept of a tracked weaponscarrier that can be carried inside by medium to heavy transport helicopter is the best way to support air mobile infantry. The limiting faktor will always be the airvehicle. And they are expensive. The german CH 53 G costs more than a F35 and is as costly in maitenance. The Problem with all modern airborne/air assault stuff is the price and numbers of the airframes. The Wiesel is a great force mulitplyer you get a lot for less than 1Mio of taxpayer money, but you need a 100 Mio asset in the CH to deploy and resupply it.

They have missed an important feature. The Waffenträger Wiesel has the best anti tank mine protection against regular AT mines possible. It has none, it is so light, the ground pressure of the tracks is so low, it just does not trigger them. And they got a light upgarde to protect against anti personal mines. It is even less than the ground pressure of a regular human. Very low ground pressure/force also means, excellent performance on soft ground. And additional, they are so small, that they can easily drive trough the gaps between the AT mines, regular placed against all bigger tanks/APCs/military vehicles.

Typical Bundeswehr myth. First of all the Wiesel is heavy enough to trigger the pressure activated detonators as Welle as normal cars. Second and more important, Most modern AT mines are magnetically triggered. And the Wiesel ist still made out of steel.
@Nobodyisperfect-us6pk
@Nobodyisperfect-us6pk 4 күн бұрын
@@JS-mb7yo First, most AT mines in the world in storage and in use are not modern, especially, what is now left in Ukraine on Russian as on Ukrainian site. All modern AT mines on Russian site were spent in the firat weeks (they have had few, and Ukraine had none), what are now left are dozens perhaps even hundred of millions of AT mines from cold war times still in storage; and not a single one of these is "modern". Second: A Wiesel 1 has a weight just around 50% to 100% more than a regular big SUV, a Wiesel 2 around 200%. But they have tracks not wheels (and a ground pressure around 0.35 N/cm2). The ground pressure is below the regular value to trigger AT mines. If they will find a modern AT mine or one of the fiber triggert ones on the site of the road with a HEAT warhead; bad luck. But the AT mines, a Wiesel will regular "find" in any conflict, they will fight, will be in most cases not modern and mostly from cold war times (or even new produced as these old AT mines are still in production as very cheap)..
@JS-mb7yo
@JS-mb7yo 3 күн бұрын
@@Nobodyisperfect-us6pk ground pressure of 0,35N/cm² would be 20% of the human ground pressure… Mines from the cold war are modern mines, with fiber or magnetic detonator and have been common since the 80s
@Nobodyisperfect-us6pk
@Nobodyisperfect-us6pk 3 күн бұрын
@@JS-mb7yo Sorry, now I have made a mistake. It is 3.5 N/cm2 not 0,35. I think, I have messed it with another value. AT mines will start with a ground pressure around 4 to 5 N/cm2 and it also depneds, how deep they are e.g.. The cold war has ended at the end of the 80th; and Russia collapsed earlier, they have stopped mid of the 80th to build and buy weapons in extreme amounts because they did not have enough money. Both, Ukraine as Russia have extreme amounts of AT mines in stock, but these were from the 50th, 60th, 70th and 80th. And till end of the collapse of the Soviet union, they had never stopped to produce the cheap old AT mines, because they were several times cheaper to produce than "modern mines". The Soviet union has had developed modern weapon systems, but not always produced them in masses, because they were just too expensive (in comparison to the old ones). Also all other states, who had bought AT mines from Russia, they have all bought the old ones. We have deen the modern Russian AT mines at the begin of the war...but not now anymore. These few were all spent long time ago. What is seen are AT mines like the TM-46/57/62 family. And with the numbers, you also know the years, they were developed.

*This AI-video is poorly researched.* The Wiesel has just received new anti-tank missiles and new battle management systems. A more powerful thermal imaging system including a laser rangefinder was installed on the Wiesel 1A5 MK, mine protection was improved and a rear view system was integrated. The service life extension is intended to keep the Wiesel 1 MELLS (anti-tank missiles) and MK (automatic cannon) in service until 2030.

You underestimate this little shitter! He plays the role of David against Goliath. He doesn't openly confront his opponent, but the opponent only sees him when he has been attacked and then it is too late. The weasel is so small that he can hide behind any bush, small trenches are perfect, dense forest areas are perfect. He is quiet enough to always get within weapon range without being seen. He is small enough to find cover anywhere and disappear again unseen. During exercises against American Abrahams, the little shitters taught the Americans to fear. They simply appeared in the dense forest edge, shot and immediately disappeared again. Pursuit was not possible for the Americans because the forests were too dense, and they couldn't get through with their large tanks. The little weasel is a hunter, he doesn't defend, he actively hunts Tanks.

Great report, but I have to intervene at one point: the used gun for Infantry suppression is in fact the "MK20", but this is in no way the "Mark 20" as implied in the video. Instead, it's a machine canon (German: "Maschinenkanone") in caliber 20 mm (in contrast to the more widely used MG-3 with 7.62mm NATO). Great caliber to hold down enemy forces when 7.62 doesn't do the trick 😅 Saw this little beast a lot in training and it's really versatile and a huge tactical advantage in many woods or urban terrain based scenarios

this nasty germans armor fighting vehicle have a few advantages are: small size light weight deployable from the air even by transport helicopters, fast with excellent mobility, easy to exploit the topographical environment for concealment and setting mobile ambushes, It can also move on forests roads easily, the light weight helps it move in muddy terrain, It is capable of carrying out a range of operations, including reconnaissance, mobile air defense platform, and an ATGMs launching platform... Its disadvantages: are that its armor is very poor and it can be destroyed by heavy machine guns, for example, the range of the 20mm rh202 rapid firing gun it carry is 2000m while the range of the 12.7mm is 1800, the possibility of saturating the front line with 12.7mm heavy machine guns and heavy sniper rifles is greater than the possibility of encountering the 20 mm, as well as its armor perhaps, will not withstand the modern sniper rifles ammunition this is before the introduction of the FPVs to the battlefields... its small size and light armor reduces the survivability of the crew... the Soviet Union had the BMD family which have the advantage of carrying in an additional to 6 fully equipped infantry soldiers, start with the bmd1which comes with a turret equipped with a 2a28 grom and PKT 7.62mm light machine gun, then the BMD2 with a rapid firing 30mm then the rest of the breed... I think the rapid-firing gun or the auto cannon is much better than low pressure recoilless guns like 2a28 grom and this one of the advantages of this nasty germans armor fighting vehicle AFVs huge punch for its the small size, but the survivability in real war conditions is highly questionable, and across the Ukrainian theaters of operations it didn't proved any exceptional qualities or capabilities, although its suitable to operate in defensive roles beside conducting local counter strokes/strikes, especially when uitli its small size with its 20mm auto cannon, beside acting as mobile air defense system, while the ATGMs carrier role reduced with the introduction of FPVs coupled with anti tank land mines as main anti armor weapon system...

All right, what you say, however don't mistake the Wiesel for an IFV, its not. The West-German IFV of the time is the Marder. A bigger boy to get 6 soldiers in its belly. Still, both have a 20 mm auto cannon. The good way for West-Germany in the 80s, I guess.

its thin armor isnt a weakness, but a strength ... its not a tank in design or tactical intention, its a high mobility (weapon) carrier for paratroopers and scouts/observers ... units which in other armies either get no protection/heavy firesupport at all or at best some equally light armor wheeled units like a buggy/jeep. Calling it a tank / tankette is a complete failure of understanding its design and usage. And especially with drones in mind you rather want this tiny, highly mobile vehicle which can disappear in woods/bushes or simply behind a delivery truck, then a large armored snail which can be seen for miles and couldnt hide anywhere effectivly.

Same can be said for pretty much any other light recon/fast attack vehicle, like all sorts of dune buggies. You obviously can't use them for head on assaults, nor can you effectively stop an assault with it on its own, but also keep general landscape in Germany and central/western Europe in mind. There are many dense forests where a vehicle like this should still be able to hide and even move well covered, making detection significantly harder, drones or not.

Man that lil tank is so frucking outdated, no armor and all that. Considering how the Battlefield looks in Ukraine, it could be helpful, or just a suicide Tank. Its small, but that also means no anti drone capabilities. Bmps are bigger, but almost the same speed, and can have atleast some drone signal disturbers. Also theire big enough that not everyone dies there when Hit. wiesel cant even carry troops.

Yeah because wiesel isn't supposed to be an APC genius. They are light fire support vehicles for paratroopers. They never engage in direct fights, they instead ambush and assault objectives from cover and concealment where their small size makes them difficult to spot.
