@@OscarLangleySoryuChess is a game that requires intelligent thinking - good chess players are good thinkers, and if you can think well, you can (and often do) end up a well-read, intelligent individual. Of course, what leads someone to become a reactionary is more complex than just "they're stupid", so education isn't a total defence, but it helps, and it means that telling a group of inherently educated, intelligent people to follow rules CLEARLY motivated by emotion and politics probably isn't going to go over well with them.

I thought the whole point of making a women's league was because they were underrepresented in chess for various reasons. You'd think allowing a trans woman into the women's league would still follow that logic of giving underrepresented groups a space to play.

Germany's constitution has my favourite start of any constitution I have ever read: Artikel 1: 1. Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar. Sie zu achten und zu schützen ist Verpflichtung aller staatlichen Gewalt. The human dignity/value is unimpeachable. To protect it and to defending is the moral duty of all the powers of the state. I'm a non-native German speaker who also speaks two other languages (not counting English), so I can offer you an outsider's perspective: When learning German, I found there were very few exceptions, which was a relief as I could finally learn the grammar and get on with the rest, without having to worry about remembering 10 billion exceptions in every sentence. However, there are also a fair bit of rules to begin with - I felt like I was in a situation where I had to learn a bunch of rules, then figure out how exactly they intersected in whatever I was trying to say to say it right. So, German is consistent for sure, but that consistency itself is overly complex . I can't blame an outsider - much less an outsider who only speaks English (known for its exceptions) - assuming that it's full of exceptions, since there's no way they know all the rules.
@serecano104
@serecano104 Жыл бұрын
I mean, imo it's so much less messy than english. english is a mangled mess of exception and convention to the point where common phrases become equally important to vocabulary german is a bit more grammatically complex but a lot more consistent. composite words are a really elegant solution to having to come up with new terms and the sentence structure is very clean.
@Alias_Anybody
@Alias_Anybody Жыл бұрын
@@serecano104 There are some odd things, like diphtongs (eu, äu, ei) being pronounced nothing like the letters forming them, -er at the end of words being an -ah sound (schwa) and the redundancy of the letters C, Y and V. But at least those rules are consistent. Meanwhile, things people usually complain about like the case system are simply leftovers from Indo-European and the infamous Ä, Ö and Ü really make sense because you don't have to guess the way for example an A is pronounced like in English.

Dutchie here, our government wanted to do the same thing the Germans did, with some slight changes, like having to go to court for a mental health evaluation if you wanted to change your gender on your ID for the 3rd time and also allowing minors as young as 16 to change their gender on their ID, provided that a parent or guardian gave consent. This would've been pretty pog, if the gov wasn't so vague about it. They were like "yeah, this is great and all, maybe you wouldn't need to talk to a gender therapist for permission to get an ID change nowadays, but you would need to speak to SOMEBODY about getting your ID change, at least" and then they basically ended up not changing anything from the previous transgender law we had. Which is a mega cringe move for a country that's generally seen as progressive and pro LGBTQ. Also, what's up with the Dutchie slander? We love to neuk in de keuken, OK?!

Honestly there isn't much to do, legal wise. You can change gender when 18 and up or with parental permission between 14 (I think) and 18. Name changes where pretty common before the law-change and the gender-change in the citizen registry now is basically an afternoon chore, thanks to the change. Germany knew about trans people a for long time. And they where somewhat accepted. There where a lot of "haha, you didn't know I was a man" - jokes in mainstream comedy and even some trans celebrities. This is probably why the far right doesn't howl and screech about it like in the US, at least not publically, and at least not until now. Although frying voices have been gotten slightly more, because we have to import every dumb brain-rot from the US.

The projected start for Germany's self-ID law is November 24. The goal is to declare your name and gender and your official documentation is updated. The "registry" of previous names and gender IDs is basically just a buffer step to make sure that a criminal can not escape law enforcement by changing their name and gender (that is: If there is an open case against you, your prior information is kept on file - otherwise it just gets deleted).
@E.Mulchi
@E.Mulchi Жыл бұрын
You don't need that if you marry and change your name. Why are trans people put under general suspicion? Also any information is not only a case. So bc the police had to come bc someone stole my work computer from the office they now have information on me and I will forever be connected to my old name for the police. It is not only the police that get the info. Some government offices have info on basically anyone so they would have a list of all the trans people in their area of influence. That is pretty bad bc I don't trust this info to stay there. Just one right-wing guy is enough for the names and addresses to get into the wrong hands... I don't trust these offices at all and I don't see a need for preemptively sending out this info...

Right-wingers often tell us that we Germans don't love our country. That we have been taught to hate it. This isn't true. It's just that the things we love our country for and are proud of it for make them go "Wait, not that! Don't be proud of that! That is bad!" I remember back in 2015 during the Migrant Crisis' peak, I was immensely proud that my country had become a beacon of hope for people fleeing persecution. I was proud of our civil society, which in a growing far-right backlash told those people to suck it. Hell, I'll even give some credit to German conservatives for their refusal to pander to and legitimize bigotry for political gain (most of the time anyway). I remember in 2017, a few days before my birthday, I learned that we were going to drop the "civil union" compromise and I would be able to finally, no-nonsense marry my partner. When conservatives and "traditionalists" tried to fearmonger, they mostly fell on deaf ears. Today I'm feeling proud of my country again.

Germany isn’t as good as it seems. I think the US, as of now, has the best chances of defending and maintaining its (semi-)liberal democracy. If Republicans don’t manage to abolish democracy in the coming decade(s), the demographic change in America will single-handedly force Republicans to move on from white supremacism and/or tip the balance into the Democrats‘ favor. European countries however, will devolve into dystopian ethnostates with their current trajectory. The same goes for Germany. And as someone with a migratory background, I can tell you, living in Germany is scary. I don’t feel safe here, I don’t trust German law enforcement and German society to protect the rights of minorities and the same applies to the rest of Europe as well. Why doesn’t anyone from the AfD speak up against the violence these people face daily, if they are so concerned with the well-being of the German people? (btw, violence against German citizens with a non-German ethnic background greatly exceeds violence against women by immigrants, which is nothing more than a statistical anomaly). Why does nobody care? Why is it that the supposed „party of the people“ doesn’t acknowledge the problem or do anything about it? I‘ll tell you why. Because the far-right are all racist and xenophobic thugs, who aren’t concerned with protecting the German people, but much rather with killing off everyone with the tiniest bit of non-German heritage as quickly as possible. Ok let's do this: The registry is the "Standesamt", where citizen data is stored. This is also the place where you'd have to legally change your name or get married. There once was an inquiry from AfD State-representatives to aquire how many Trans-people are in the said state. This was shot down by all other parties. Also, data exchange between agencies is near impossible in germany due to data proction laws. It's an annoying hindrance in 99.9% of cases. This is the one case they claim it's for. The BVS (constitution protection agency) is an unreliable do-nothing agency with almost no power. Watching people and adviceing in legislature and court cases is practically all they can do. Some super-fringe parties have indeed been baned left and right (literally). But one noticeable exception was the NPD and yes: the N is for Nazi (long: Nationalsozialistisch). The reason it wasn't was because it had gotten insignificant due to the AfD's rise, or so the argument went. Also: The BVS had been run long time by a far-right-wing conspiracist that even aided the AfD in how to avoid getting on their watch-list, (wich is also probably why the NPD wasn't banned). It was a huge scandal here. The center-right party even tried to hire that person as a ministry consultant after he was fired, but changed course when they noticed how much he had fallen out of favor. German technically is a germanic language and so is English. Both our ancestors where called Anglo-Saxons, and Saxony is, to this day, part of Germany. They literally didn't change name in well over 2000 years. The reason your language sounds so different is bacause you guys took more from the French than we did and French is a romanic language.

Specific to what he was talking about here, the Romans never really dominated the language in Britain and English did not develop out of Latin at all; the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings arrived after the Romans left, and the Romance elements of English mostly came later still from the Normans, as well as from people during the Renaissance borrowing words directly from Latin because they thought it made them sound smarter. There is a lot of Latin-derived vocabulary in Modern English, but we didn't get it from the Romans.

I looked a bit more in the self-ID-police thing, and complaining about it really is just complaining about the self-ID law not abolishing the police. The part that the complaints are about is that the name and gender change get forwarded to the police, but really in the least bad way that still makes sure that the police can link former crimes committed under the deadname to the person. they get a notification about the name and gender change, but if they don't have a reason to keep it, they are required to immediately delete it. So there is no list of every trans person. I don't really see how they could make the law better. The only alternative would be either abolishing the police, which is not something i would expect from a self-ID-law, or giving the data only to the police if there are investigations against the person or the person is a former criminal. but that would mean the police would have to give that data away to someone who probably should not get it. Therefore i think this is the least bad solution, and what actually would be neccesary is to make sure the police follows that law, not to change the law itself. There are other things about the law which imo. deserve more criticism, but for the police part i really don't see an issue.

They're supposed to delete the data if they don't have any existing information on that person, but if you even reported a stolen bike, they get to keep it. On top of that, there's been multiple occurrences of police being caught in private nazi-whatsapp chats, so there would just need to be a nazi policeman sitting at the right place at the right time to get a bunch of trans people's addresses that he can then send on to his nazi friends.

the data gets to the agencies which would potentially need the link between old and new identity, and since there are people with the same name some other information is needed. and i am pretty sure the police can access the address of people anyways. and yes, if they have some information that they need to log about someone, they obviously need to keep the link between old and new identity. how else should they be able to identify who reported the stolen bike if they e.g. find that stolen bike and want to return it to the owner? and yes, i know that there are nazis in our police. but than the issue is the police not doing what they are supposed to do, and not the police being allowed to do things which they shouldn't be allowed to. that is something a law can't fix.

There is a weird relationship between English and German. Old English is somewhat easier to understand for Germans than for modern English speakers. Maybe the Germanic elements of English were stronger in the past? You can see the germanicness of English in one of the examples Vaush tried. "doet pijn" just means "does pain" ie. Vaush should have listened to German trans people before celebrating this. The law as finalized includes the requirement that the name changes are sent to various government agencies, which effectively allows them to create lists of trans people. It also excludes anyone "at risk of deportation" and requires a waiting period and an announcement to the agency six months ahead of the change, meaning a bad faith clerk could just "misplace" your announcement and reject the change. It also includes a provision to allow businesses like sauna operators to discriminate against trans people.

All traces of their former "identity" just vanished into thin air and nobody could ever trace "Diana Meier" back to "Dieter Meier"? Also, do you have the slightest idea how much the current process hinged on the good will of doctors, psychiatrists, and THEN some government agency clerk? How intrusive, humiliating and outright violating the whole psychological assessment could be, depending on the doctors involved and their inclination to help? How long waiting times have been to even get that psychological assessment to begin with? Six months is nothing in comparison. I'm genuinely curious how people who are critical of the new proposal think things have worked thus far and how that has been in any way "better".

If trans-women (in this paticular case) dont even pass remotely as "regular" women, most operators would doubt that they had bottom surgery and that would most likely be an inconvinience for their other customers on ladies day. Although i dont think such a day is necessary for various reasons, there are women who want that kind of separation in private places and that's okay.

And two, most sauna in Germany are for both women and men who share the space anyway, and in those places which offer "women only" evenings or areas, well, they always had the right to reject or let in whoever they wanted, since they are private businesses. And considering that Sauna's in Germany are visited nude, well, there never was much to hide in the first place, was there?

4:00 okay... The Germanic languages are native to Denmark, north Germany and the lowlands. Proto-Germanic was spoken around 500 BC in this area. Germanic then split into three brances, east, west, and north. All East Germanic languages are extinct. The North Germanic languages are spoken in Scandanavia and Iceland, and include Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and a few others. The West Germanic languages compose of the entire rest of the branch, and include German, Dutch, and English. English was developed when the Angles and Jutes invaded England and began replacing the native Celtic languages. This germanic language was called "Anglo-Saxon" or Old English. Old English gradually began to become more simplified because of loans from the North Germanic languages, which were spread by viking invasions in the late 1st millenia. Old English became Middle English after the Norman invasion in 1066 which succesfully unified England. The Norman language was a Romance language, closer to Latin than English. Because of heavy Norman influence, English actually became slightly closer to the Italic languages in terms of vocabulary, but its grammar is still almost completely Germanic. The Romance languages actually only refer to the languages that descended from Latin, which includes Romanian, French, Spanish, and several others. The Romance languages are part of the larger Italic branch, which includes several extinct bronze age languages like Faliscan (the closest language to Latin), Umbrian, and South Picene. Proto-Italic was spoken around 1000 BCE in the Po river basin. Italic, Germanic, and the Celtic languages that were displaced by Anglo-Saxon (although a few are still spoken) are all part of the larger Indo-European language family, going back to around 4000 BCE, the proto language being spoken in the Pontic steppe, north of the Black sea. The Indo-European family also includes the Balto-Slavic languages (Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, ect...), Hellenic languages (Greek, Tsakonian, ect...), the Armenian and Albanian languages, and the massive Indo-Iranian branch, which is further split into Iranian (Persian, Pashto, ect...), Indo-Aryan (Hindi, Nepali, ect...), and the small Nuristani branch. So yes, English is not only related to Spanish, but also Kurdish, Hindi, and even Rohingya, the only one native to Myanmar. Also, nearly half of the world population natively speaks an Indo-European language. NOTE that the Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian are NOT Indo-European. These languages are all Uralic, which are unrelated. Proto-Uralic was spoken east of the Ural mountains around 3500 BCE, although this date is heavily disputed.

OE was germanic. You can see what that looked like in Beowulf. In 1066, the Normans conquered England. They dumped a bunch of french words into it and the language became what you see in Chaucer's Cantebury Tales. The basic 300 words that get used by everyone are mainly OE words. There was no direct Latin influence, it was Latin through the French, which like all of the 'romance' languages is an evolved dialect of Latin. Finally the printing press helped seal the form of English around Shakespeare's time, and Shakespeare is the English you can read that is basically the same as ours, with a lot more flowery sentence structure and vocabulary. Shakespeare had a redonk vocabulary, he was very smart. I believe other languages like English are Finnish, etc.

I'm going through this right now in my home country, France. And wow, Germany made it much easier then here, even though it's gotten much easier here too since 2017. *If you're curious,* in France, before 2017, you used to need to be followed by a psychiatrist and also have undergone bottom surgeries and so on. Nowadays, it's easier. If I wanted to just start with a name change at first, I could go into a town hall with some written testimonies and if the person taking charge of my case isn't a transphobe (which has been known to be a problem, people down right refusing to give you the paperwork or demanding to see some papers from a psychiatrist), I'll get a few paperwork to fill... and bam, it should be done, in one or two weeks, I'll get my new ID card with my new name on it. But now, I need to go and change my gender which is more complicated. There's also another option, which is the one that I'm going to do. Change my gender and my name at the same time. Now, for this, it's more complicated. From what I understand, I need to go to a court and sit in front of some judges, and explain, as well as demonstrate, that I am indeed the gender that I say that I am, and which name I want to use. With this, I also need to bring proof of all of this. Written testimony of family, friends or whatever, with things proving their identities. Some bills under my new name. As well as maybe, some photos proving that I dress "according to my new gender". It's much, much, much better then it used to be. But it's still not perfect. France is an administrative hell. Everything moves awfully slow here. And what scares me the most about this system, is the human element. Because you could do everything perfectly right and still get denied your changes because the judges were transphobes. Which has been known to happen... Which is why I'm going to do some research on the various courthouse and so on. Thankfully, I'm in a city with lots of Queer associations and groups, so I can ask for help. But yeah, I feel stressed out as hell at the idea of having to go in front of a bunch of people and justify myself as to why _I want to be who I am_ and maybe have that be denied. So yeah. To me, as a German speaker, Dutch sounds hella fascinating. Most of the language feels familiar, yet many words are unexpectedly different in many ways and make you wonder where the H*ll that came from (and then you just assume it must be weird French influence). There are "old" words in the Dutch language that were used in German, centuries ago, but fell out of use, making Dutch sound randomly "antiquated" sometimes. It's interesting to see which words survived in Dutch, that in German only continue to exist in old poetry. Finding these words feels like a nerdy treasure hunt (a simple example is the word "pijn" --> "pein"). It has a somewhat different rhythm and melody to it, too and has plot twists in almost every sentence. It's endearing in a way and fun to listen to, even if I don't actually understand it all. 10/10 cool language.

Because of the Norman conquest, all the “long” words in English are Latin/French in origin, but the shorter more Common Germanic words were retained. (That’s a bit of oversimplification but you get the idea).

You could even make it more similar by using "Ross" instead of "Pferd". Pferd is derived from Latin paraverēdus while Ross has its origin in Middle High German "ros" and finally Old High German "hros". Which really just looks like a very drunk person tried to write horse but wasn't able to find the e. And German Stuhl is of course very similar to English stool. There are also some neat tricks to make German words more like many English words. Like you can often (obviously not always) try to swap a d for th to look if that makes it more like an English word (diese -> thiese = already quite close to 'these'; drei -> threi = already close to 'three'; Bruder -> bruther = already close to 'brother'). You can try to swap tt or t for th as well: Mutter becomes Muther, very similar to 'mother'; Monat becomes Monath = 'month'. Or b with v: geben -> geven = give; Biber -> biver = beaver Or ch with gh*: Nacht -> Naght = night; Licht -> Light = light; Sicht -> Sight = sight *but be careful: Knecht -> Kneght -> Knight? Well, obviously not, but both words have the same origin, meaning something like 'servant'. The term "Waffenknecht" (weapon-servant) was actually used during medieval time as a term refering to a mounted warrior in heavy armor regardless of social class, similar to the English Man-At-Arms. But that term then developed towards Landsknecht/Kriegsknecht (land/war servant) which was now specifically a fighter who wasn't noble and didn't fight mounted while Knecht on its own was still mostly used as servant. The master/slave dialectic of Hegel is for example actually called Herrschaft und Knechtschaft - Lordship and bondage.

English is not also a Romantic language. It's Germanic. The heavy influence of French came when the Normans (i.e. French) invaded. That's why a lot of French words still used in English today, are words associated with the upper classes, e.g. pork vs pig.

Not as based sadly. They include that trans women can still be discriminated against in female-only spaces like locker rooms. Since you don't have to disclose that you are trans this goes for too masculine-appearing cis women too. If you change your name a lot of places will be informed like the police if you are in any way known to them they will get the info about the name change. For example, if you ever had any contact with the police they will be informed. You are basically put under general suspicion. It would be acceptable if they get this information when they start an investigation but why do they need to connect the old to the new name by default? That is not done if you marry and change your last name... Also with how right-wing the police and other government offices are it is also not great to send this info out like that. So basically. It gets cheaper and easier to change your name but we actually lose protections we had before.

English is a Germanic language by any classification, not a Romance (Latin based) one. However it has a higher share of Latin vocabulary compared to other Germanic languages. But it cannot be both, this classification is based on grammar structures and historical evolution of the language.

English is 100% a Germanic language, most closely related to Dutch and Danish/Norwegian. Old English (as spoken by the Anglo-Saxons - the actual Anglo-Saxons) was mutually itelligible with Old Norse. English just has A LOT of vocabulary borrowed from Old French langues d'oïl because of the Norman invasion, which gave birth to Middle English, but at its core, it's absolutely a West Germanic language.

It's the most obvious when it comes to animals and food...the english word "cow" is clearly related to the German "Kuh", but you eat "beaf" which is clearly based on the french word for "beouf" for the dish. The english "scheep" sounds like the German "schaf" and the "lamb" like the German "lamm", but you eat "mutton" from the french word "mouton".

As a german born and raised near the dutch border, I agree with everything Vaush said about the dutch language. Plus, we have a saying that if you fail your drivers license three times, you get a yellow license plate instead of the german white one. Guess that's why they put so much effort in bike infrastructure. On a serious note, this law change is already taking forever. Rumors said that we would get this "next summer" when I started my legal procedings in 2021, then I heard from a rather trustworthy source in 2022 that it would likely take effect "next summer", but now we still have to wait until it's actually passed and in the text it says November 2024, I fucking hate our bureocracy.

I actually learned Dutch in school as a German and I live near the Dutch border (and now a cute Dutch furry) and yeah, it was very funny for me. Although the thing is that Dutch also sounds a lot like the local dialect (which I never learned) and my parents and grandparents only spoke that dialect when they were drunk, so that added a lot to the "drunken German" experience. I remember we read a book called "Alleen maar nette mensen" and it's basically about some rich young adult who describes himself as "a Jew, but looking like a Moroccan" who mostly just loves black women with big asses, like that's his whole character. We also watched movies in Dutch and that was always just super funny. But to be honest, I kinda like Dutch, it sounds really cute.

While the new law is an improvement in some aspects it is heavily criticized by trans rights organisation as it has unnecessary, discriminatory parts that put trans women under general suspicion, it has a clause that trans women won't be able to change their gender if Germany is in a state of war or if they changed it shortly before that, there's a stupid waiting time, some aspects are worse than before for example intersex people have to use this law now which makes it worse for them, and the most important and scary thing in my opinion is that the police and a lot of other institutions will now be notified that you're trans and though they say this Information will be deleted right afterwards that won't stop the right wingers and outright nazis who have infected the police from making their own lists on Telegram or something. And lists don't end well.
