For our international viewers: 0:00 Cologne has its own local kind of beer, called "Kölsch". It's lighter than other German Beers. People from Cologne celebrate it, while many from other parts of Germany think it tastes like piss. 0:03 Bonn, despite being a relatively small city, used to be the capital of West Germany, mostly because the first chancellor of West Germany, Konrad Adenauer, was from there. After German reunification, the capital was moved to Berlin again, making Bonn largely irrelevant. 0:06 I don't know if there's a joke I'm missing out on here, but Düsseldorf has one the largest Japanese communities of any European city. Also they have the reputation of being posh, especially in contrast to their archrival Cologne (though posh isn't the same as feminine, so there might actually be a joke I'm not getting here) 0:11 Münster is known as "Fahrradstadt" (Bike town) because of its good bicycle infrastructure. Many people there get around by bike, rather than car or public transport. 0:17 Frankfurt has been called Germany "most criminal city" because it used to have the most crimes committed out of any German city. 0:25 Honestly, I don't get this one. Pretty much the only thing Kaiserslautern is known for is its football club, so that might allude to football fans. 0:29 Swabians (people from Stuttgart and the region surrounding it) have a reputation for being stingy. 0:34 Heidelberg is a small, wealthy, and beautiful town with an old, prestigious university. You won't find many poor people there. 0:40 Bayern Munich is the most successful German football team, and they have been completely dominating the Bundesliga (German Premier League) for decades, to the point where people have become disinterested in German football, since they pretty much know that Bayern München will be the champion again each year. 0:46 Though Nuremberg is located within the federal state of Bavaria, the region is known as Franken, and they have their own distinct cultural identity from the Bavarians to the south. Both Franks and Bavarians are very adamant that they are NOT the same. 0:55 Dresden is the capital of the federal state of Saxony, which is one the most right-wing regions of Germany. Dresden has been the center of fascist protests for decades, but particularly since the refugee crisis of 2015/16. 1:00 Leipzig is the other big city of Saxony. Saxony has its own dialect, which is by far the most hated and ridiculed out of all German dialects. 1:08 Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia, a state in the middle of Germany where pretty much nothing is happening. 1:17 For a capital of a rich European country, Berlin is doing quite poorly financially, with mountains of debt. This is a point of anger particularly to the rich states in the south, who pay more into federal funds than they get back. 1:22 Potsdam was the capital of Prussia, and used to be much more important than the neighboring Berlin. However, with Berlin growing steadily and the city becoming overcrowded, Potsdam has effectively been dragged into the capital's orbit. 1:29 Rostock is a city in East Germany. Hartz IV is the German unemployment benefit. After reunification, the East suffered terribly, with high unemployment, and by and large the East is still lagging behind. The joke would work for any East German city really, but I guess the other ones mentioned so far had other attributes to be parodied. 1:35 Just a pun. Though I don't know whether they are referring to the German word 'kielholen' (keelhaul), which has 'Kiel' in it. It also fits because Kiel is a port town. I guess people from Kiel hear that pun often? 1:41 Hamburg was the site of the G20 summit some years ago. There were loads of counterprotests to the summit, but also militant protesters burning cars, smashing store windows, and basically laying waste to the city centre. It was a huge thing in the media at the time (with debates about the supposed danger of 'left wing terrorism' and so on). Lots of people on social media were actually posting that Spongebob meme ('We did it, Patrick! We saved the city!') in response to the whole thing. 1:47 There's an old proto-meme from the early days of the internet, the 'Bielefeld conspiracy', saying that the city of Bielefeld doesn't exist - it's all a hoax. Since Bielefeld is largely irrelevant for most Germans (apart from the people who actually live there, of course), most people will be happy to bring up the joke as soon as Bielefeld is mentioned. 1:51 'Moin' is a common greeting in all of Germany, but especially in the North. In other regions, it may be restricted to casual settings, or only used in the morning, but in Northern Germany, it is generally used at all occasions, at any time of day. 1:54 Hannover, despite being one of the biggest German cities, is notable for not being notable. When compared to other big German cities, they are quite lacking in distinctive local customs, traditions and the like. They are also said to speak the 'purest', most 'standard' German. 1:57 Saarland is the smallest federal state (apart from the city states) and largely irrelevant to most people from other regions. So, yeah, the usual incest joke about a remote and rural part of the country. 2:00 The name of the city 'Essen' just means 'food'. 2:02 Those are all medium-sized cities of the Rhine-Ruhr region. This used to be the industrial heartland of Germany, with coal mines, factories and so on springing up in the 19th century. Most of the industry is gone now, and these cities suffer from unemployment and poverty and the like. Also, since the old factory buildings are mostly still there, they are by and large not pretty to look at.

The joke about Kaiserslautern is that the City is well known for its large American military bases, particular the famous (or better infamous) Ramstein Air Base. The joke is based on the idea that because of all the noise from the military drills and training. That the avrage person could not sleep particulary well. I used this joke as a filler. Mostly because I did want to get atleast 1 city in every Bundesland. But I had no ideas for the Rhineland Palatinate besides it. But I got a good slander for a diffrent Rheinlandian city, Mainz, in my second video.

About the Franken x Bayern divide, I've seen some towns in America (both North and South) where they had German half-timbered houses (Fachwerks) which were built by German immigrants. They would often promote these towns as having "traditional Bavarian architecture," even though the Bavarian part of Bavaria is notable for having almost no Fachwerks. This is most likely because the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber (which is in Franconia) is very popular among American tourists and they probably just take it as a "model Bavarian town."
