The problem with not recycling your trash properly is, that it might not get picked up if there's the wrong type of trash in the bin. Maybe that's the reason why the old couple checked it.
@winterlinde5395
@winterlinde5395 Жыл бұрын
I think so, too. And they only pick it up once in a fortnight, anyways. Paper only once a month. So when you all use one big container in a residential building with 10 families it can get nasty, when the recycling people don’t empty the compost containers because your neighbors put plastic in there. Even worse in summer…

The pedestrian light thing is taken so seriously because our kids walk to primary school. Next to the traffic light there is often a sign "Be a model to children!", it has truly been engrained in us that this is a moral issue. But between midnight and 6 a.m. that's usually not taken as seriously...

@@TheDemouchetsREACT That is only half of the answer: you remember the part of the video about the driving licence? It may cost you 2000-3000 Euros to get your driving licence. No comes the bummer: if get caught jaywalking, you might lose it as punishment. So you would have to go through the whole process again. After paying a fine, of course. Now think of the kids, and you wanting to set a good example. Add to that the fear that you might get caught by the police crossing the red light. Only than you get the whole picture. :)
@RustyDust101
@RustyDust101 Жыл бұрын
@@xwormwoodKinda correct. As a new driver's license owner you have a probationary period of two years. Any kind of traffic rule violation is considered much more harshly during that period. Just to make you get used to sticking to the rules. So if any traffic violation as a driver would result in even a single point in Flensburg, the city with the central German traffic violation register in it, then your driver's license is revoked instantly. Any passing of a red light, whether as a biker, or a vehicle driver, will result in a point in Flensburg. However, as a pedestrian you would need to have caused some kind of greater incident for that to be a major infraction. Otherwise you'd only be potentially fined 10€ for jaywalking at a pedestrian traffic light. But for that you'd have to be caught red handed by the cops. The chance if that happening is ridiculously small.

In my small town, traffic lights are turned off at most intersections between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Since I often cross the street before 6 a.m. at one of the traffic lights, it is sometimes difficult due to the confusing, winding road.

The overtaking thingy: she meant that you are only allowed to overtake somebody in front of you from the left side no matter how many lanes there are. That's why the slower cars and trucks usually drive on the right side and the really fast ones on the left side. If you have people driving 140 mph and overtaking right and left that would be really unsafe. There are quite a few more rules but that is one of the most important ones. ☺ and I really love the mentality you described with getting up and making space for pregnant women and elderly. Or let the kids in front so they can actually see something. It's these small things that make you feel comfortable in a town/society, I think. 🥰

Overtaking ONLY on the left. If you get caught overtaking on the right (there's only one exception to the rule) you might be in a truckload of trouble. Cause the act of overtaking to the right is already worth a point in the central register plus a month of revoked driver's license. If there was ANY involvement of danger, right up to an accident with injuries involved, say goodbye to your driver's license permanently. To even attempt to apply for another driver's license you have to succeed in front of a panel of medical professionals, called the medical psychological evaluation. That thing isn't easy to pass, and they grill you rigorously.

6:52 As English is a germanic language both German and English ar rooted in the ancient germanic language. The formal version in (old) English is "You" (German "Sie") and the informal/famliliar version is "Thou" ( German "Du") (Compare old English: "Thou hast" (you have) to modern German: "Du hast"). The thing is that the modern English language dropped the informal version because it was rarely used (everyone was being polite/respectful even the parents were adressen formally). Because the german "du" (spoken: doo) and english you sond so similar, that german people often think English speakers "dutzen" just everyone when in fact English speakers "sietzen" everyone.

The case with the traffic light is because children often go to school alone, often at the age of 7 and we don't want them to make a habit out of it so they don't do it where is a potential dangerous street. When it's late and the children are at home, many don't take it so seriously. In some apartments and houses, the garbage men do not take the garbage if it is not recycled. Then you have to wait a week or discuss it, it will be picked up earlier at your expense. With the formality, it depends a lot on the region and the boss, for example I can address everyone with a normal You, my Boss too. With older people you don't know,when you just want to ask something or have a little conversation, the formal is more common.

The recycling thing is serious because usually the community you live in has to pay operating costs/fee on top of the rent. And if your community recycles always wrong, all people inside of the community will suffer for it because the government will raise these operating costs then for picking up the trash

The packing struggle is the same at the neighbors. In the Netherlands most supermarkets have a big spot after the register to pack your groceries so you’re not in the way for the next customer. Not in the Lidl or Aldi who originate in Germany. They have a really small isle after the register and they like to open as little registers as possible so you’re really stressed to pack your stuff and leave asap. So if you want you’re grocery shopping to be relaxing avoid the German supermarkets. Which is a bit hard to do when in Germany 😂

the overtaking from the right - it's also illegal in US, but not enforced from what i'v heard. It's same over all of Europe (reversed for left side UK&Ireland) - everyone needs to hug the right lane and you can go to the left only when you are passing. After passing you need to get back to right lane. Essentially a slow moving car cannot be on the left lane. Each lane to the left is faster than the right to it. When you got 3+lanes the far right one will be for slow cars + trucks, middle for fast cars, left for overtaking. You cannot hug the left lane
@TheDemouchetsREACT

The difference is, once you are done overtaking and there is a gap which let's you merge comfortably to the right, and you don't have to pull back out again immediately at your current speed, then you are obligated to move to the right. This is called Rechtsfahrgebot/ right driving obligation. The law in Germany is pretty clearly formulated, but it also leaves a lot up to the common sense of the driver.
@Why-D
@Why-D Жыл бұрын
In German you have to drive always on the right lane (Rechtsfahrgebot), except you overtake. Autobahns have two to four lanes for one direction. So if you ended your overtake action you move to the right.

The check out register race is real. The cashiers at any of the discounters like Aldi, Lidl, Penny are insanely fast. They have shortened the run-off area to only a few square inches behind the scanner. But usually there is a perfectly shaped spot where you can slot in your shopping cart. It is normal to throw everything back into your cart, pay, and go to a small trestle table a short distance behind the cashiers to pack it in leisurely. Obviously there are some people who try to pack it in directly at the cashiers, only to loose miserably. 😂 Really, don't stress out in Germany at the cashiers. Not worth the hassle.

The smoking issue is vastly exaggerated. The percentage of people smoking may be higher than in the US (I have no idea what the actual numbers are though tbh) but nobody in my famliy or among my closer friends smokes. I hate it, it smells disgusting and I wish smokers knew how much they annoy non smokers. So it's defintley not "literally everyone"! Leaving the money on the table and just leave is not a thing here. You always settle your bill directly with the waiter. So your tips are safe. I'm a bit confused why that overtaking thing confused you so much... 😅 It's simple. In Germany if a road has more than one lane per direction you have to use the right lane. If you overtake someone, change to the left lane, pass them and then get back to the right lane. You can't stay in the left (or middle) lane longer than it takes you to pass the other car and you're not allowed to pass another car on its right side (but in order for that to be an issue that car would first need to violate the "drive right" rule). If you're overwhelmed with packing your gorceries, just throw them back in your shopping cart first and then take all the time you need afterwards. 🤷‍♂
@Andy81m

The problem is that if you have various types of waste in your garbage bin, the waste collection service won’t pick it up. This is also checked by the waste collection service, and if it’s determined that recycling isn’t being done, you receive a warning, and the next time your contract is terminated. Then, you’ll have to take your waste to the recycling center yourself.

It costs five euros to cross a red traffic light and ten euros in the event of an accident. A driver's license can even be revoked for a red light violation on foot. the thing with the rules thing is that the cops are very serious about the rules aswell. So when the police sees you crossing the road and its not green, even though theres no cars around, you still get a fine or your drivers license can get revoked.

The same culture and compliance with the rules is also in the Czech Republic, but it is not as strict as in Germany. When crossing, as Jen from California, who lives in Prague, would say - she looks around and if no one is looking and nothing is driving, she will calmly cross the street even on a red light. I recommend her channel "Dream Prague".

The issue of politeness in public transport has less to do with countries than with the size of the population and the growing anonymity of cities and metropolitan areas. In a small village where everyone knows everyone else, people greet each other in the morning, whereas in cities people walk silently past complete strangers and possibly don't even look each other in the eye so as not to seem intrusive.

Behavior like controlling other people (and this also applies to other aspects of life) is mainly done by old people. It's very annoying, but we usually look down on them for it. They are old, have experienced war and have a heightened need for everything to go "right". Young people don't do that at all. At least I don't know any. It's not their job either. That's what the public order office is for, they actually carry out such checks and if you don't separate your garbage properly, all of it is left behind and not collected AND you get a heavy fine.

That may also be because in America you pay around 500 dollars. Here in Germany we pay up to 3500 euros, i.e. 7 times what you pay...that's why many follow these rules (not ALL) but there are also idiots! Greetings from Germany 🙂

Statistically roughly a quarter of the German population smokes, whereas on average the numbers of male smokers is higher than female smokers. So "everyone" is a bit exaggerated, but it's certainly more than in the USA on average and certainly too much. Should be taxed higher, since it also eventually burdens the health care system.

The Supermarket situation is really different than in the US. It's because you're supposed to put your groceries back in the card and go to your car where you have to use your own reusable bags and boxes. Plastic bags are sparse in supermarkets, paper bags are more common. But you have to pay for either anyway. It's to avoid trash.

"Everything is closed on Sundays" is of course not 100% correct. Open are: 1. Everything that has to do with tourism and leisure such as museums, cinemas, publich baths / swimmingpools... including gastronomy i.e. restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlors... 2. Bakery shops (mornings) to get rolls for breakfast/brunch 3. Petrol stations (including their range of products) and motorway service stations

They must create a National Insurance, financed by the State in the United States, that competes with private insurers. In this way, the abuses of private insurers will be avoided. An insurance backed by the Government is a business for the benefit of the People, the system would be fairer and 80% coverage would be offered if you work, and 100% coverage in hospitals and in case you do not work, in expenses of hospitalization and surgeries, in this way the other private insurers would have to apply equal coverage, and respect health. And it would serve as a parameter for the other private insurers, it would also generate more jobs in the USA. It's the best thing that could happen in the USA.,,

99 % smokers you see in Germany are NOT Germans raised by German parents witha German system of value und behaviour but Eastern European "traelling" immigrants and other Eastern European immigrants who do not care about health n cancer etc , as well as migrants from some asylumseeker countries where smoking is not forbidden, such as Turkey... Tipping in Germany actualy IS expected but not in the amount as in the USA, you re expected to round up the amount, i.e. if the bill is 27 Euros you ll give 30 Euros. If you do tip ZERO the waiter will think something about his service was WRONG, and it will def be regarded as very rude and chavy to no tip at all in cafes and restaurants...

@@kingofshit303 Interesting. @Combat Duckie, in Slovakia, the number of smokers is 21,2% (the info is literally from yesterday). And this is considered high. Why US Americans always say that everything is closed on Sundays? Is the only thing you are interested in is shopping? Yes, you can not shop on Sundays (and companies don't work), but almost everything else, especially what have to do with entertaining people, are open: restaurants, cafés, bars, theatres, cinemas, zoos, museums, fun parks, sport clubs, and the list goes on... so there are a lot of things you can do with your family and friends. Or you just sleep on Sunday after a great and long nightlife on Saturday/ Sunday night, because you don't have to work and your employer can't force you to.

What she meant about the passing cars is that on American highways, many drive permanently on the middle lane and even, if the very right lane is free, they don’t move over. It is absolutely normal (while it is not legal in America either) to simply pick a lane and stay in it, resulting in people passing a car in the middle lane on the left or on the right. In Germany, we are taught to always take the lane, that is the furthest to the right and only to pass cars on the left and veer back into the right when the manoeuvre to pass is over. You can get fined to pass a car driving steadily in the middle or left lane…

Regarding crossing the road on a red light: I hear this in many videos, but it's actually not that serious. Yes, a lot of people here won't cross the road, even if no cars are anywhere to be seen. However also a lot of people will do, and you won't be judged if you do so. Just be careful when there are children around, then you might get some angry looks or comments because they want you to be a good role model.

Hey. About the overtaking on the roads. She's saying it like she is in the middle lane. You can only pass on the left, not the right. 😎🇨🇦
@cayreet5992

As for not overtaking on the right side: I've seen US highways where people are driving past others on the right side, because the person in the middle or left lane is driving slower than them. That is not allowed here in Germany. You have to get to the left of the car you want to overtake. To help that, though, one rule here is that you always have to use the right-most lane possible. You can't just stay in the middle or left lane because you like it, you have to make way for faster cars. As for supermarkets and the cash register: most Germans, like me, simply take the cart, put all on the belt, then put it back into the cart, walk over to a counter-thingy most supermarkets have, and then pack in peace.

Hi. On german streets there is a law, the so called "Rechtsfahrgebot", which says that u must drive as right as possible ,if you have enough security space inbetween the traffic... Since nobody likes to drive on bad lanes, which happen to be the on the right especially, because the heavy trucks are right bound too and you have to switch lanes, if you go at a reasonable speed (Trucks are usually the slowest) the system kinda motivates to go fast, because the faster you go the less you chane lanes. lol Greetings from germany

As of 2023 the minimum hourly rate in Germany is €12 ($13.18) ... and of course waiters do get paid at least minimum wage and are entitled to at least 4 weeks of paid vacation (20 days @ 5 day week) and unlimited sick days. Contrast that to the minimum wage for waiters in the USA ... you realise, that you do not only pay your meal, you literally also pay the waiter as well. Different concept .. so naturally waiters in Germany do not depend on your tip, in the USA, they literally do.

What, how and when the garbage is separated and collected may differ from county to county. Off the top of my head my county in south east Germany separates: - paper - plastic - bottles/cans - bio waste - white glass - brown glass - green glass - batteries - small electronic items e.g. mobile phones - furniture - metals ... and I do not feel like there is a culture of checking each other's waste separation habits by the neighbors, the example that was mentioned sounds rather invasive to me, but it might be done by the entities who collect the waste.
