I also saw Gerry, The Kinks Gene Pitney and Marianne Faithfull in Winter Gardens Bournemouth late in 1964. I was 12 and my friend and I were allowed to go in without an adult. We were pretty close to the front. What a night! Screamed my head off!!

The Cavern Club opened its door as a jazz club on Wednesday 16 January 1957. After Gerry Marsden persuaded Ray McFall (the owner) to let him and his band perform at The Cavern Club, it quickly became the centre for Rock & Roll. Punters flocked to see The Beatles, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes there, instead of listening to jazz music.

Gerry is so funny, and always was. His management didn't let the humour come through like they did with Lennon in the Beatles back in the day. All the effort was put into developing the Beatles and the Pacemakers were slided into light entertainment. This band should have been so much more.....
@reneemallicone68393 жыл бұрын
They were far better than the Beatles. It's a shame they broke up just a few years after they started. I could never understand why he didn't make a huge effort to go out on his own. He still had so much more musically to give. An absolute Legend! They don't make em like this anymore. It's sad! RIP Gerry. You'll never walk alone.

@@reneemallicone6839 Thats a ridiculous statement....., aside from the fact he wasn't a song writer and John and Paul were probably trhe greatest songwriting partnership of the 20th century. Gerry's problem was he and his band quickly became out dated and by '67 and the summer of love , they were yesterdays news . You either moved with the times with a little self reinvention or you were left behind. Of course the guy had talent and he was a pro musician all his life so he did very well really, but he was not a premier league rock star .
@robomaster4882 Жыл бұрын
@@MrPhilfridge Same thing I was going to post. Little if any songwriting ability and songs were written by others. Failed to advance with the times. Beatles with L&M continued to advance and changed their sound on every album. Like Rubber Soul to Revolver to Sgt. Peppers to the White Album and Abby Road. Just WOW. Such a progression. Gerry was great for the time, and I still love those old tunes to this day. But he was limited by his inability to advance to the next level.

Not the original Cavern of course, but I hear they tried to recapture the original atmosphere by sprinkling 20 gallons of urine around the place and putting flakey distemper on the ceiling to drop on the fans, Cavern dandruff, which confused many as most of the audience lost their hair many years ago. You can't put a price in memories, apart from the price of admission of course.

The key board should have used a piano sound with more of Gerry's hits, (with some strings). Only a thought from a 60's teenager. Was this unrehearsed , because the band seem rather unsure about the song structures at times. Not really doing Gerry justice.
