Amazing! She took a big chance, no matter how much she loved him. I did the same and ruined my life. It's a major gamble. We all want to believe I'm happy endings and that love conquers all. But the reality is much more grim than that. Good for them both. He has a great woman and I'm glad for him. She has a man who recognizes it and what he put her through plus her loyalty, so I'm happy for him. I believe they beat the odds.❤

If I recall correctly, I bought this single and Al Stewart’s “Time Passages” single on the same day when I was 14 back in 1978 so there’s always been a connection between the two for me. “Home And Dry” would be another great Gerry Rafferty song to react to. By the way, the lead is played on steel guitar with a slide, which you hear a lot in Hawaiian music. There’s your beach connection.

The guitar totally sounds like the work of Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, but it's not him. Anyhoo, speaking of Lindsay Buckingham, check out two of his solo hits from the 1980s: "Go Insane" and "Trouble." Mick Fleetwood and John McVie might have been the heart of Fleetwood Mac, but Buckingham was definitely its soul.

All 3 are 70s guys. 80s folks should thank their luckiy stars for 70s musicians! you hear music like this from 70s artists, then listen to an 80s mess and they seem like children in comparisison.
@KevinRCarr

Hmm. You mention sax again. Listen, you really need to check out a band called Morphine. You can pretty much choose a song at random, because everything they did was good. I'll give a couple of examples at the end, but I feel I should also mention that their ending was epic, as the lead vocalist/bassist (2 string electric bass, that is) collapsed onstage at a festival in Italy, and died a few hours later. You should check out songs called Cure For Pain, Honey White, Radar/The Only One a live recording with two songs. Here's the hook for you; where you'd normally expect an electric guitar you instead get a baritone sax, or a fellow playing baritone and alto sax at the same time. Fantastic stuff, and I can't help thinking you'll appreciate the hell out of it.

Any man who has had a strong woman in his life, to support him through the dips as well as the peaks, could not offer a lyrical tribute any more meaningful or groovy than this. Rafferty was a master musician and lyricist, and his troubled times thru addiction to the drink added huge depth and a real honesty to what he wrote about.

Cannot bypass “Still the Same” either. The song isn’t actually about a literal gambler, it’s about the vain Type-A overachievers who always seem to fall on their feet and that Seger met almost everywhere he went on his first outings in Hollywood. The resonance of this song to the world today - now overrun with these types of people everywhere, not just in California - is eerily significant. Said Seger in an interview: “...They're just very charismatic, but they have tremendous faults, but part of the appeal is the charisma. You overlook everything because of the charisma. That's a gift and a curse."

There's the constant instrumental presence of the organ, I think it is, in the background of the verses. It brings the feel of melancholy to the piece. I absolutely adore this song. What's so sad is knowing that despite his appreciation and the heaps of talent evident in all his music, Gerry Rafferty died of complications with alcoholism. At the very least, his presence lives on.

It’s really sad, he meant every word in that song, probably knew his alcoholism was ripping him from his true love and I get how he felt the need to tell her how much she meant to him.
