This is widely considered the greatest anthem in all of sports. The anthem of the Liverpool Football Club. Google a video of the fans singing it at Anfield, awe inspiring. YNWA ❤

Gerry and The Pacemakers were contemporaries of the Beatles and also from Liverpool. They had 6 Top Ten hits in the UK and remarkably their first three records here went to number one (which even the Beatles didn't achieve). "You'll Never Walk Alone" was their third number one, a revival by lead singer Gerry Marsden of a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel". The song has gone on to have a life far beyond the charts of 1963 because it was adopted by the fans of Liverpool FC and it has been sung before matches at the Anfield stadium to this day.

This is another great British group from the 60's during the Merseybeat scene. They had a lot in common with The Beatles as they both came from Liverpool, were managed by Brian Epstein, and were recorded by George Martin. They had a lot of great hits such as "How Do You Do It?", "I Like It", "I'll Be There", "Ferry Cross The Mersey", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" etc. Sadly the lead singer Gerry Marsden died last year.

The song was from a tear jerking scene in the 1945 movie ‘Carousel’. Later performed as a cover by Liverpool group Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1963 and adopted as their anthem by Liverpool Football Club and whose fans sing it proudly in the stadium. It is certainly a rousing number for those facing adversity or a long hard journey.

No - the movie was 1956, based on the Broadway musical which premiered in 1945. In the early 60s it was not uncommon for rock groups to cover Broadway show music - especially slow ballads like this one. There was a song on "Meet the Beatles" - "Till There Was You" - that was from the musical The Music Man (1958). That's just the way they did it back then. This video is amazing - and it's very hard to watch it and not get choked up. Think about the power of art to make us feel - and make no mistake - this video is ART. Don't get embarrassed - the rest of us are all crying also. Nobody will laugh.

This song came out in 1963 and become no.1 the week my parents got married in the November. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year and i got this song played and 50% of the guests were in tears. Its a song that stirs up so many emotions. Many people who have mental health issues have said this song has helped them to truely believe there is help and they are not the only one.

@Isleofskye It's a Liverpool fc anthem so although I have a soft spot for Celtic with the Irish connection you should probably concentrate on your team and comments, this isn't a competition about who is loudest, but it is about my team and the fans who have been singing this song at Anfield since the early 1960s. YNWA RIP 97
@Isleofskye Жыл бұрын
@@James-hd6ez The fact that Liverpool chose to make it their Anthem does not preclude other fans from doing likewise, like Celtic or, indeed, Borussia Dortmund. It is not as if it was written with Liverpool or Liverpool F C in mind, as I am sure that you are aware that this song originated in the musical "Carousel" in 1945 which was adapted from a Hungarian play, originally based in Budapest and updated to be part of the New England State of Maine. Not much of a Merseyside connection , unless old Oscar Hammerstein was a secret Scouser:) The idea that commenters should only "concentrate" on their team smacks of "self-entitlement". Self-entitled Scousers? Whatever next and just to make it even more ridiculous ,I was ATTENDING games from 1962 before Gerry made it a massive hit and my team are NONE of the aforementioned but,as long as it is OK with you,I,as someone who has visited 84 different grounds and been to around 1,770 games will continue to comment as and when.*** ***That is,obviously,with your implied permission and I have no Irish connection either. RIP 97. RIP The Queen.

It's funny, don't recall this on the radio and yet I am familiar with "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" and etc.. And even more, I am very familiar with Rodgers & Hammerstein and don't remember this from Carousel either. I thought this song was much older then 1945, more like a religious hymn.
