I always say that young people orchestras are our hope for the future. Music saves our soul.

Cuban Overture is certainly as significant a piece as "Rhapsody" and "American" - it deserves to be performed more.

Hot stuff! If you didn't know this was Gershwin, you'd never guess. It seems he could do anything.
@hartzell74076 жыл бұрын
Possibly true about the first section (although there a lot of his signatures there, too), but the middle section (the slow canon), is pure, unmistakable Gershwin. The bluesy wails of the strings soar over some of the most lush polytonal underpinnings I've ever heard. He managed to make totally unexpected progression choices seem inevitable. Just brilliant.

He left the world too soon.

Have never heard a youth orchestra anywhere near this good.
@bartmacmillan11525 жыл бұрын
Agreed! You might find several that can come close, but this is a surprisingly mature performance by a young group. There's a tiny precision problem near the end, but they come out of it for a strong finish! The percussion section is EXCEPTIONAL in this! I have heard some performances where they get a little too carried away, but this group plays like they are a complete part of the ensemble! Also, there are a couple of you tube recordings of this with the trumpets playing rotary valve instruments; that just does NOT work in Gershwin. Loved seeing this trumpet section on piston trumpets (with the Amado water keys! good job guys!) This is definitely a very fun performance of this piece!

There are lots of other performances of this on KZbin, and they drive me crazy because none of them are anywhere near this one in expressiveness, tempo, sheer musicianship, great conducting, getting right inside the music. George would have loved this!

George certainly would have been just floored over this performance- I know it's exactly as he had it in his mind !

@@larryecross If I have just the sound on, I keep "seeing" him up there conducting. Did you know there are Gershwin sightings, sort of like Elvis, ever since he died, including by his own brother? He left us too soon, so I guess he likes to hang around sometimes.

**Love this performance** perfect tempi,spirit and energy. AND...of course great Youth Orchestra led by a great conductor: Joshua Dos Santos GERSHWIN got it right in 1932. The original title of the score is RUMBA. He captures the energy of 1930 Havana to a bulls eye. Research and listen on you tube to Antonio MACHIN, Sexteto HABANERO, Miguelito VALDES and Orquesta Casino de la Playa and to early MACHITO and his Afro Cubans to hear what GERSHWIN was drawing upon. WE RETURN TO CUBA....2015

I have been reading various Gershwin bios, and they ALL miss the boat on this one. One said it was poor stuff compared to Rhapsody in Blue, and another said it was fairly good lesser Gershwin, but perhaps because of all that tricky polytonality and contrasting rhythms, it "never caught on". Such Neanderthals! And one of these bios was written in the 1980s. There was a transformation, even a transfiguration going on in music then, with Gershwin breaking ground and leading the way, and they simply did not or perhaps would not hear it.
