Well, I'm happy that a younger generation is inspired by the young American Caruso, Maestro Mario Lanza. This fellow has learned of Mario Lanza and channels that energy well. So Bravo here and the voice of our dear Mario is not superceded; Mario’s legacy is a standard!

Who are the 19 fools, who clearly don’t understand music, who gave this the thumbs down. This is not even a matter of opinion. Empirically speaking, it’s a sublime performance. If you understood anything about singing, you’d know that.

An amazing performance, and a very talented singer. Not that I wish to criticise this gent, but no one sings that song like Mario Lanza. The diversity in his voice while singing was simply unique, and I doubt we will hear the likes of it ever again.

Magnificent singing! Although this was billed as a Hollywood concert, Castronovo sang the original Broadway lyrics. For the film version, the producers faced a copyright dispute as to using the original lyrics, and the songs were revised for the movie. Mario Lanza sang the Serenade in the movie, and, as terrific as it is, his version always seems a bit jolting to those of us who cherish the original as performed on Broadway, and in (sadly infrequent) stage revivals. Kudos all around to John Wilson and Charles Castronovo! How about a staged version of The Student Prince at a Prom?
@rogerpropes71294 ай бұрын
Which version does William Olvis sing in the 1954 biopic of Romberg? It is the definitive performance of this song, much better than Lanza's, who is overrated anyway.

In the Met Charlie was allowed to sing only once, in Magic Flute. Mathew Polenzani.was taken to the Met permanent stuff instead. Mathew was working very- vry hard to prove that he was hired not accidentally. And, indeed, in some operas he was able to raise to yhe occasion.Too bad, that Met was unable to keep Charlie as well.....

My love for operetta began as a child, the first time I listened to Harry Stockwell(the voice of Prince Charming) sing "One Song" in Disney`s "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I listen to different genres of music, but operetta is my special favorite for the reasons I stated in my original posting. Lorraine

Though some listeners to this fantastic rendition of Charles Castronovo's of this beautiful piece may criticize his diction and intensity of tone, he is superb in his performance. Yes, Mario Lanza may have sung this song well, but Charles provides a vibrato that seems unmatched to any other singer. His strength of voice as he holds a note is excellent and is not overdone, as Lanza has shown at times. I can see that Charles has studied his music well. His diction is clearer than any other I have heard. My analysis of this heartfelt rendition overwhelms the emotions. Mr. Castronovo gives this piece exactly what it deserves, and more. Bravissimo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@barryoderfer5 жыл бұрын
John Poly, you said "His diction is clearer than any other I have heard". Have you not listened to Lanza? There is no one with clearer diction than Mario.
@ronaldo1901725 жыл бұрын
I suggest you listen to Lanza's definitive version again? Charles' vibrato is so old school and difficult to listen to while Mario's is sublime, sung like a song instead of Charles' almost operatic take on what is a classic operetta version

Overall, a very fine performance of the Serenade, but marred slightly by an almost whispered low note and a spread in the vibrato on the sustained high note, which is sung here as a B-flat. A young tenor with this much potential and stage presence should have a fine career.
