거니 is probably from 것이다 verb. By the way, you are excellent in teaching Korean, the best Korean teacher!

I thought 줄 알다 was "to know how to do something" eg 테니스를 할 줄 아라요. But I see it can also mean in other contexts "to know, as in assume/guess"

It's not from that, but originally a contraction of "~게 있," which is a different form.
