27GB for 600 SFX is roughly 46MB per sound on average. If that sounds weird to you, let me explain. Some files are a megabyte, while the biggest historically is 1.5Gb for 12 seconds of interior sounds driving a Fiat500. The previous years combined are ~ ~125GB ambients ~64Gb car/plane/Tank sounds ~22 GB SFX so bois & gals, lets download some car sounds.

Also a lot of recordings are in 192khz samplerate, which is massive amount of data for the same length in seconds for lower samplerates. That's Aaa studio quality right there. To reduce memory while retaining some quality when exporting reduce the samplerate to 48khz or 44.1khz

lol many productions, including games, employ sound designers to create a unique, specific sound for them. Twister used many sounds, including a freight train, for their tornado. They had trouble finding Godzilla to record it, so they made it up by mixing sounds together to create a roar. TIE fighters (Star Wars) I believe had this as well, using down-pitched F1 cars and other sounds. If you need a creature, vehicle, etc. to sound a certain way. You can layer sounds to create what you need. Did that help?

@fernwaerts
@fernwaerts 2 ай бұрын
Using them in a open source project depends on one factor: Shall the entire project be released on a single license. If so then it is not compatible with the popular open source licenses out there like GPL, MIT or APACHE. The problem here is that open source licenses are usually "free" in the sense of they don't limit the usage - prohibiting using the files for ai or for redistribution makes it not free and therefore not compatible with these licenses. However these licenses are designed for source code and you could argue that audio files are not source code and can easily replaced by other samples. If you want to use them in an open source project (that uses a GPL, MIT, APACHE or similar license) what you can do (and what a lot of projects do) is to use multiple licenses for your project: your code is then licenses under a FOSS license, the assets under this. I'm not a lawyer and software licenses are a highly complex construct that varies from region and country. So take everything what I say with a grain of salt
@julienb5815
@julienb5815 2 ай бұрын
2:33 "the files are huge so it's really high resolution" (NB: yes, I'm paraphrasing) => It's mostly horribly poor compression. They could have provided a near-lossless Opus option for a tenth of the size (and more than decent-enough quality at 5% of the size)... But nope, they didn't do that on purpose because they want to use the size in GB as an argument for saying "look how fat that pack is" (and I'm not making that up, we can all see on their website and on the video at 00:53 that they say "we give 27GB of files" and not "we give X files"). How very non-sustainable, wasting terabytes of bandwidth just for the sake of marketing.
@Sonniss
@Sonniss 2 ай бұрын
Hey @julienb5815, appreciate you bringing this up! I get where you’re coming from with the file size concerns. These bundles are packed with source recordings, which are the raw, unaltered files straight from the recordist. It's this level of quality that gives sound designers and audio pros the flexibility they need. Compressing, especially surround sound recordings, isn't as straightforward as it might seem. While compression can indeed reduce file sizes, it also compromises the integrity and usability of these sounds in professional settings. If you're sound designing, having access to the full, uncompressed files is key to ensure the best possible quality in your final mix. It allows for a wider range of manipulation without loss of fidelity, which can be crucial for high-quality projects. Also, we've considered that compression might lead to other issues for folks who plan to extensively work with these sounds. From altering the sound character to introducing unwanted artefacts, it’s a bit of a slippery slope. We aimed to deliver these sounds in their most versatile and useful form, hence the hefty size. Hope this sheds some light on why we opt for quality and completeness over compression. We’re all about giving you the best tools to unleash your creativity! 🎧✨
@julienb5815
@julienb5815 2 ай бұрын
@@Sonniss Oh, I very much agree with your arguments for providing the raw files. But that being said, it would be preferable to have both options, raw and compressed. This way people could pick whichever works best for their needs. I'd be surprised if the majority of users actually needs the original files, as long as the compression isn't too aggressive (but something like ~200kbps Opus, or even just Vorbis for the sake of 10-year-behind software, should definitely be high quality enough)

Since you're allowed to sell the sound with the product as a whole, i would say: "Yes." You are allowed to distribute it as open source. You dont claim ownership. You just redistribute like the license intents. To be on the extra safe side, always include a copy of the license and properly link those files in a readme or smth lime that to the license.

The license is bizarre (as Mike mentions): "Licensee may use the licensed sound effects on an unlimited number of projects for the entirety of their life time." Think of what happens if you want to sell the rights to your game (which uses Sonniss content), or contract with a publisher to market it and pay you a commission. They would probably expect a perpetual license, or at least a license for a defined time period. They wouldn't want to invest in marketing without that. A license that expires at an unknown time outside of their control (*your* death) would be very unappealing. At best it would devalue the rights to your game, and the value at any given time would depend on your age and health. It is vague. What happens when the licensee is a company? What is it's lifetime? Maybe until the company is disbanded. Maybe that's a solution. What does "use" mean? Maybe you can use it as long you're alive at the time of publishing it. At best, the vagueness would be a concern, if you're going to use their content. And this applies to anything you buy from them, as well as the free content.

Once you start working on commercial projects, the large size from having a flawless quality is worth far far more than saving a bit of storage. Their free archive, all combined, is around 200GB+. If quality isn't important to you, you can then use a command line tool to convert them to ogg (and save about 90% of the size). That said, if you don't have the storage space and aren't working on high fidelity projects - passing might be a very good option.
