It's crazy that Kiko and Paul (Gilbert) both are monstrous pickers, yet, they actually swear by the 2 opposites: Kiko plays flat and parallel avoiding the "scratch" pick tone whereas Paul plays always with an angle just to get THAT "scratch" tone every time (as a cello he describes it)....More amazing though is that both are super articulate , clean, fast and awesome!!!
@Grumplefut3 жыл бұрын
And they are both some of the best teachers out there. So friendly and informative
@Betodiasc3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I noticed that. But I think Paul plays in that way because he is almost 100% a rock/metal guitar player. So the scratch sounds amazing in his style. Kiko is a rock guitarrist too but he has more jazz/Brazilian and Fusion influences. Some styles where guitar is played in clean tone and the scratch sound is not the more requested. Whatever, both genius guitar players
@pergustafsson11553 жыл бұрын
Marty Friedman has the weirdest picking technique ever and he has a fantastic tone and can pick really fast! That goes to show that you can pick the strings pretty much any way you want, as long as you believe that what you're doing actually works. I find that very inspiring! :)

@@Betodiasc but Paul plays jazz and fusion too
@Betodiasc3 жыл бұрын
@@kasarraial Yeah. I know he can play jazz. Paul studied at Berklee and he certainly studied it a lot. But it's not his thing. Kiko first intended to pursue a career in instrumental music by playing Brazilian Jazz / Fusion. However Angra appeared in his life and the rest is history. So I think Kiko has more of that language in his musical vocabulary. But the truth is that these guys are masters and they can play almost everything hehe

I've tried your picking position and I can say it is amazing. I will just add that, as an intermediate player, tone is not the biggest benefit for me. Having the pick/plectrum flat keeps hand much more relaxed and the pick position makes accidentally touching nearby strings more unlekely. I immediately improved my spread and cleanliness!!! I went to school for classical piano as a pretty tense player. It takes work to undo but it is definitely a critical step. I'm trying to get into more advanced guitar and notice the same tendencies. I can promise that putting the time in (no matter how much it takes) to loosen up and eliminate tension in your joints from the shoulder down will make you an infinitely better player. I don't know why this is, but I can assure you!

There is no doubt, the parallel position is better for articulating the evenness of sound. If you don’t hold the pick in a parallel position to the strings, you induce more drag on the pick and that creates inconsistencies in volume, tone and possibly timing, too.

@PastelComGini3 жыл бұрын

4:43 Legit looks parallel 😂😂. Dave Mustain says same thing and they "think" it's patellar, but it's always at an angle. His isn't as extreme as some, that's why it feels parallel to him. If you watch the new shredder for Megadeth, his pick tilt is practically perpendicular, massive tilt and dude shreds. 🤘

I’ve had a few students who were left handed but didn’t tell me and they came to their lessons with a right handed guitar. They all struggled to play and were learning very slowly. Eventually I found out that they were lefties, so they switched to left handed guitars. They all improved much much faster and had a far easier time learning and playing. The last few years I have made it a point to ask new students which is their dominant hand. As great as Kiko is, he may have been even better had he played left handed. Just a theory.
@eltonluz943 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I played a right handed guitar for six years, myself being a left handed. I never improved even practicing for hours constantly. I could do the chords, but couldn't solo, my right hand was always stiffer than the left, no matter how much training I did. So I quit and bought a left one. In two weeks, my picking, with the left hand, was way better than when I was using the right hand. I guess Kiko's hands are way more flexible than most people. He has said in a live that he couldnt play some Van Halen stuff because of his left hand, so he is limited, of course in his own level, when it comes to speed. I guess he could be a better player.
@srficarra2 жыл бұрын
Hey hank. Maybe, maybe not. The reason why I say this is I’ve noticed a lot of people who favor their left side still seem to do a lot of things right handed. I have a son who writes left handed and throws a football and plays guitar right handed. When he was younger I took a squire strat and did like Hendrix and strung it upside down to see if he was more comfortable playing left handed. He tried for a while but decided he felt more comfortable playing right handed. My daughter writes left handed but swings a bat right handed. I also had a few friends who were left handed that did a lot of things right handed. I definitely agree and would advise anyone to use their dominant side to do anything from playing guitar to swinging a bat. And even more so with guitar cuz usually the first guitar a left handed person picks up is strung for a right hand. So I could definitely see a lot of left handed guitarist attempt to play right handed without even trying to play left handed. But of course their are exceptions.
