This Pride Month marks 55 years since the Stonewall Uprising, which sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The Stonewall Inn is still operating and now offers a visitor center next door to preserve the history and honor the people behind it. NBC’s Joe Fryer reports for TODAY.

Makes you cry with gratitude how far we've come as a society. Welcome home, Stonewall Inn Visitor Center!

It's also a reminder of the battles we're still fighting, and how much we have to lose. Why is the concept that everyone has civil rights and a place in society still a point of debate, all these years later?

I wasn’t expecting to cry watching a segment from the today show. If I ever get the chance to visit, I don’t expect I’ll be able to be composed. I’ll just stand there and bawl

It's good to see this. I used to go to the Stonewall back in 1969 to dance. We had two juke boxes one in the bigger room and one in a smaller room. I was there the night it all happened. I got out of the Christopher Street station about 1 AM (Just after Midnight Friday) and saw the Front door entrance all boarded up. I said to myself, "I guess I'm not going to the Stonewall tonight". There were fires in the wire trash cans on the corner. So I went around the corner to go to Julius bar instead. I was 19 at the time, that was the legal age in New York for alcohol. I didn't see all the violence, etc. so I would love to talk to someone else who might have been out that night to find out what actually happened. I was a part of that moment in history!

I hope you have a chance to share your story with the folks at the visitor center someday. Glad you were safe, at least. Happy Pride!

It's very close (walkable) to the 9/11 Memorial, 9/11 Glade (new - for first responders that have passed away as a result of 9/11) as well.

What a beautiful story of the bravery and strides made within a community that was once in the shadows. We will stay visible and will not allow the extreme right to push us back into the shadows. Equality for all!

Thanks for covering this. We have come so far yet today we seem to be going backwards. Witness the recent "moms for liberty" melt down in a Hawaiian hotel lobby with drag queens being publicly humiliated. So shocking and sad.

As is typical right now, these relevant stories often attract comments from the likes of people who speak only on the basis of their own twisted ideology; heavy on ignorance and void of facts. Unfortunately, it's no longer uncommon to read a response that includes the likes of "sterilization" or "mutilation" -- it's one of the many repetitive byproducts of an uneducated individual. Facts don't belong in their universe. If the safety of children were truly a priority and not a political football among other things, a fully legitimate organization and movement such as "Save the Children" wouldn't have been co-opted in pursuit of radical propaganda, ironically working (both directly & indirectly) against the very subject they appear to champion.
