Honestly helpful. People are coming here looking for tip,tricks,what not to do’s advice, and so on. I think a woman’s perspective is a bit more elaborative, and detailed verses some of the men’s short and direct videos. This is coming from a man who is very OCD, and critical of the quality of my work. I am staining and clear coating black kitchen cabinets for the first time, and definitely on edge about how the clear will turn out. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

Just came across this video. Excellent tips. Agree 100% about using a sprayer. Just one thing that isn't mentioned in videos dedicated to DIY newbies with a sprayer (not this video as it is not about sprayers). Majority of these DIY sprayers are electric. Combine that with an oil-based poly and that creates a very overlooked fire hazard. If oil-based be sure to find out its flashpoint and compare to the sprayer's manufacturer and their flashpoint restrictions and only spray in a well ventilated area.

Thanks for sharing all these tips! I don't use a spray gun since I don't redo many furniture but I use a flat foam sponge and apply satin finish water based polyurethane without any imperfections. The top coat levels itself beautifully. The final result always depends on the product's self leveling abilities. I experienced a nightmare when applying oil based polyurethane! That was a challenge!

You made an excellent point about about using poly --not wax--to seal a pieces that you are flipping to sell. I have often wondered about why someone would use wax to seal a piece that they buyer would probably not know how to take care of. Thanks for validating my thoughts!

This is all new to me, so please forgive my ignorance and questions. They're not meant to be disrespectful in any way, rather I'm trying to completely understand. You initially said to use a flat finish with 4-5 coats then you said use a satin finish and 3-4 coats. Was the first one for brush application while the second one is for when you use a sprayer?

I got a sprayer for Christmas, but haven’t used but once. It’s scary! Do you wash your sprayer in between coats? If not, how long can it sit between coats?
@FlipItFurniture Жыл бұрын
Hi! I don’t wash it between coats. I wipe the tip off really well once i finish the coat. That way it doesn’t clog when it’s sitting. I usually let it sit an hour or two and it’s okay. I also wipe it a few times during spraying. If I spray the drawers I will give it a quick wipe before I move on to the top. Keeping that tip clean is the key! Good luck!!

Thank you for the tips. I have just recently found that using the matte/ flat finish is so much more forgiving then the satin. I’m still terrified of the sprayer. I have 2, one is pneumatic from Harbor Freight that I’ve never taken out of the box, and the other in a cheap electric one that I’ve used once over 2 years ago on some smaller items, not furniture! I don’t know why I’m so scared to try it.

I don’t know if this helps but I have been going through heck! I used DIY paint in a red with black highlights. Hard to explain. Beings it was a table top, a coffee bar, I wanted something strong. So I went with Annie Sloan’s lacquer. I bought the matte. Ugh! I have redone that top three times and was ready to throw it outside for someone to take away! What I found out, after screaming and pulling my hair out I found someone that muffled out that if you are using a dark color, you have to use a gloss finish first and then a matte after that. Don’t ask me why. I was rather upset that I would have to buy two products just to get a matte finish. But it actually worked. Personally I wasn’t impressed with the lacquer. I wish everyone would just use coasters and care for their pieces. I am working on an IKEA wide file cabinet as we speak that I took the doors off, the guts, and the legs, so it’s basically like a bookcase with one shelf. I just painted it to look darkish gray marbled effect with a wall paper backing. I have to stop being a perfectionist and just go for things. I top coated the inside shelves, and top with PolyAcrylic. Even though it’s satin it still has a sheen. So after two coats I also used a spray can of Rustoleum clear Matte Sealer - Chalk Finish. That gave it that nice finish and is durable. So I know what you mean. I actually hate putting top coats on. It gives me anxiety😂. I think in my stained pieces I’m going to go back and use Polyurethane and thin it 50/50 which makes it a wipe on. But only stain pieces that I don’t have to worry about yellowing. I hope this helps.
