I love watching Hovie play the piano but it might be even more fun to watch him sing. I don't know if anyone else has said this but I did see a couple of references to the "dancing" and thought I'd mention that Elvis supposedly got his leg-shaking from Big Chief Wetherington. I was fortunate to get to know Hovie Lister and Jake Hesse a little back in their Masters V days. They were great musicians and really fun to be around. I was a child and they told me lots of Elvis stories, especially J.D. Sumner. I was in awe.

I had not heard that about Elvis, but I can definitely see it! Also, I have heard Harold Reid of the Statler Brothers say that he got many of his mannerisms, such as his thigh-slapping, from watching Big Chief.

According to the book "Last Train to Memphis", Elvis did get the leg shaking from the Big Chief! That book is well documented and has been deemed accurate by critics so I believe it. Elvis loved the Blackwoods and Statesmen and went to all night Gospel sings.

I love this arrangement. I've been a fan of The Statesmen all my life. But I am reading these comments saying that they are the original group to sing or record this song. Actually, this version of the song was recorded by Dorothy Love Coates and her group, The Gospel Harmonettes on the Specialty label on July 11, 1951. So, while The Statesmen do a pretty good job on this song, the original group to record and perform it was Dorothy Love Coates and The Original Gospel Harmonettes.

I was raised on gospel in church & Southern Gospel. Also doesn't hurt that Bill Gaither wrote alot of those great hymns alot of us grew up on. Anyway, I first became familiar with Hovie & the Statesmen after seeing them on the Gaither homecoming & the documentary Bill did on them, to this day they set a stanard thats not been touched.

Often imitated, but never duplicated - the "original" Hovie Lister and The Statesmen Quartet! When they performed this number on the Grand Ole Opry stage at the "all night gospel sings" they had to carry Hovie off the stage, he just couldn't stop!

It's nice to hear the original version of this song. I was led to this because of the EHSS version. Reading the many comments which criticize EHSS saddens me. I think it's great that they put their energetic flare on this song. So what if they dance? If you can sing in praise, can't you dance or paint or sculpt or do any other artistic thing in praise? If it brings people closer to God, why not? I was led to Gospel Music by EHSS and I'm grateful for their ministry.

I think they did. I have the cassette versions of both the Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers "RCA-Victor" hits, so I'm sure it was offered on CD. On the album it is a live version from the Wally Fowler All-Night Sing which at that time attracted bigger audiences than the Grand Ole Opry show that was earlier. My how times changed.

The interesting thing is that these days, we can all know and assume that this is true. In their day, though, the Statesmen were criticized for "jazzing up" gospel, very much like their African-American counterparts were criticized by some in the black church. They were also criticized by some older-thinking whites for "sounding black" -- they obviously drew a lot of their style from the old "Negro" quartet tradition.

Alot of the songs the statesmen were known for came out of the black church like Get Away Jordan, I Wanna Know, Sweeter as The Days Go By just to name a few but they did the songs great Justice. One of Hovie's best friends was Doris Akers who was black and wrote sweet sweet spirit.

I hve to say SS bass may be small but he is as good as George Rex and JD (JD is in a class of his own) and the still with us Big John, lol still no one like rosie and james Blackwood. You have to remember; Denver wasnt originally part of the group; Cat Freeman (Vestal Goodmans brother) sang with them before Denver came along. Cat came back after Denver passed before Rosie. The Statesmen sound changed when Rosie came along. Rosie and Denver are different style singers; Denver (to my knowledge) never sang any of the solo/lead parts; but Rosie did most notably on "Oh What a Savior"

@statesmenfan Oh I agree that Rosie was able to become so popular because of Denver's untimely death, he brought a different sound to the Statesmen. There are very few tenors of that era; or any era for that matter; that have the vocal power of Denver Crumpler; the only one I can think of off the top of my head that might even come close to Denver is Cat Freeman who preceded and followed Denver as the Tenor for the Statesmen
