I love this video. As much as love and encouragement is essential sometimes you need to kick your ass. I think this is a fundamental message. Like a musician, its about expression but if you can't play the instrument you can't express yourself properly. The hand and eye are our instruments, they need tuning, you need to learn the technique. Only then can you express yourself the way you want. The more you experiment and learn the more tools you have to expand your frame of reference in creativity.

This video came out at the right time for me. I've been staring at a blank page on my sketchbook for days. You know when you feel like creating something but somehow, once you start doing it you're never satisfied with how it turned out? Yeah, hate that. But I remembered something you said in your past video about "never underestimating the power of taking a step back, having a rest and come back with a clearer mind." Because it was then that I realise the last time I actually went out of the house for leisure was a week ago. This is because I've been so caught up with my uni portfolio, focusing only on the deadline and not giving myself (and my brain) a break. I've also been trying to find ways to improve on myself but never had the courage to try new things. But not this time. I shall try and take that leap of faith and commit myself on improving in 2017^^ Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Just one final thing, I love watching your videos and the things you talk about are always so relatable. May all of us succeed in improving ourselves to become better artists! Cheers :)

I've never really bought a book about art, and now i realise that maybe it will be worth giving it a shot. Thank you for all the amazing tips! :)
@04nbod7 жыл бұрын
Not just art. Its good to have books of artists you like but buy things like landscapes of Venice, Cityscapes of New York, Fashion of China, anatomy etc...Things that you can do studies from. Not all of us are pros, we can't go a week to to draw from life or hire a model. We have to make do with an hour at night after work and books are great outlets. Of course you still need to draw from 3D but practicality wise books provide a broader scope
@weirdchick2167 жыл бұрын
It's really helped me. I've bought art books that are a collection of artists for a certain style or medium, art books from artists I really like, anatomy and gesture drawing books, and even books that have just photography that inspires me to draw.
@daniaelsamaraai7 жыл бұрын
Does it really affect your style that much? what sort of books are the best? Anatomy? lanscape?
@lindseytheartist7 жыл бұрын
Danio start with with ones you're most interested in, it'll help you study harder. Then, either when you feel confident in that first thing or are ready to take a break from it (or have noticed a weak area in your skills you want to improve) move on to a new topic. They're not all totally separate either, so eg if you're really into landscapes reading about colour theory will help you nail the tone and contrast, or if you're into fashion illustration researching pattern and surface design will expand your visual vocabulary 😊
@04nbod7 жыл бұрын
Its not just about style, its about range. How much do you see a day? What can you sit down, look at and draw? Books expand your ideas, open your mind to things you don't see in your everyday life. Personally I love vibrant colour but I have to say my day to day life is pretty drab.
@Vicisblessed7 жыл бұрын
I'm 37 and just started drawing a yr ago. sometimes it's discouraging when I'm not improving the way I would like. I can never seem to access the inspiration part. I'm quite good at copying art, like outline art and stuff like that, but I can never get something in my head and then draw it. I am also really bad at human features, or any kind of properly realistic drawing or proportions.
@tweetyhowlter30697 жыл бұрын
Faith Jones I feel you 😭
@xfranczeskax7 жыл бұрын
Faith Jones me too. I find however that I get ideas when I make something for somebody. Like presents for mum. You have to think about what she would like and what would be fitting and then ideas start coming. :)
@faithjones11937 жыл бұрын
F_ For that sort of thing I am okay, like I can think of something to do but then I have to search for the actual image and copy it for it to be good. Like for my dad, I did a polar bear card, for mum I have done a dirty dancing card and for my little brother and sister I have done various characters and drawings but even though I have the inspiration I can't get it down without a reference image.
@coolchickenminigun7 жыл бұрын
I have an inspiration issue as well and I realized that I normally get ideas from listening to songs that I admire or enjoy and try to translate their message or theme onto paper in any way possible. It is usually challenging and never turns out the way I want it to, but hey it gets the pencil moving and once it does, you can never put it down
@faithjones11937 жыл бұрын

Do you have any tips on getting motivated? I have a lot of inspiration but the only thing I'm doing lately is writing my ideas down. I want to make stuff, but I am too lazy to get up and grab a pencil. I already have a lack of time because of school and I waste all my free time on the internet. How can I get into the 'flow' again?
@aleahevans97067 жыл бұрын
one thing that's helped me is making things accessible. Put your pencils, sketchbook, anything you might need for drawing in a place where you see them everyday and where you can easily just pick them up. For the internet thing, make it a little bit of an 'effort' to get to your computer/smartphone - I know this is a bit hard, especially if you don't have a laptop, but it can be done. Another method is to make yourself conscious of the times when you go to access your computer/phone - like imagining a stop sign in your head (i know it sounds ridiculous, but sometimes it works!) and really visualise that if you pick up your phone now, that's all you're going to be doing for the next few hours, end. The thing is, once you've started, you'll probably keep going - which is bad when using the internet, but good for drawing! Wow, this was one heck of a comment. I hope my rambling was at least a bit helpful :D

Thank you Minnie, I'm really in a rut right now and I almost felt (still feel) on just giving up on art because...
