If you've got primroses in your garden you may want to split them - so you can have more, in case you lose a plant...you may even want to give them as presents! Here, Ian Roofe shows you how easy it is to split them and has some handy tips!

Every question I had answered, mine were fantastic this year, I think the clean up I did last spring really benefitted my plants. Removed all damaged/ dead leafs and they thanked me! I'm off to devide mine and replant around the rock edge of garden. Thank you!!

I just found these growing nearby my house taking over the ground cover by the river. I divided a few pieces and replanted here at home. I hope they survive!!!

I notice that you seem to be growing them in full sun! What would be your maximum temperatures for planting them in full sun?

Hi Natalie. So pleased to hear from you and delighted you enjoyed the video. Ian says you shouldn't need to split them in their first season unless they have grown so well that they are running out of space or if they have gone the other way and are looking weaker than when you purchased them, which can sometimes happen. There are a few other options - you could pot them up into a bigger pot to make a showier display, you could keep them in the same size pot and gently whittle away the old compost from the roots and add fresh soil based compost. Or - if you're keen to split - you could split and put one half into another pot.
