What IS a deadcat? What is a blimp? And what do these things have to do with microphones? Andrew from Deity Microphones is back this week with a wind protection buyer's guide that answers all these questions and more. After this video, you'll be able to get great audio outdoors no matter what mic you use!
Sound pros and filmmakers at all levels struggle with wind. Learning how to remove wind noise in post can be very frustrating, the best option is to learn how to record sound without wind noise. There are many types of wind protection out there, and each serves a slightly different purpose. The main concept you need to know is how to use wind protection without losing high frequencies.
Let us know in the comments below if you have any additional questions about recording outside with wind protection!

Good coverage, as always! I like the hair situation - keep it up! Before too much longer you might be able to use some of that hair for wind protection. 🙃

Great video Andrew! I would love the next video to be about how to go wireless with a boom operator by using something like your Sound Devices MM1. Though plugin transmitters is good way to go there are still those that prefer the MM1 set up.

The windspacer from bumblebee is great. So much lighter than a blimp. I am only using blimp for MS or really high wind nowadays.

Another good video upload. DIY is also not a bad option, esp in some parts of the world; because of cost and availability issues. I've used both ready-made and DIY rigs. Both work nearly comparably.

Very true. In some parts of the world the cost is flipped and the DIY options are still viable.

@@DeityMicrophones thank you. I live in India where some of these problems exist. I have yet to find any products from the Deity line-up. I can't replace them by any DIY exercise! 😢

Howdy Andrew. Thanks for another great video. I'm starting to put together an audio kit. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I expect to record a lot on our wonderful beaches. Large crashing waves and 15 MPH winds are the norm. I have a question about a blimp. Is there a standard distance from the tip of the microphone to front edge of the blimp? My thought was to hold the front cap upside down against the main tube of the blimp and then mount the microphone just so it touches the cap. This would create a consistent ball of air in front of the microphone. Is this a proper set-up for a blimp? Thanks Eric

Hey Andrew I have a question what’s the best mic to use when filming a video with someone singing would it be easier to get a recorded track and sync it with the live performance to get clean sound?

To anyone watching this be very careful with DIY options. Professional products are made with sound transparency and materials in mind. If the fur is attached to a cloth that isn't sound transparent, it will muffle your sound like crazy. The way the fur is attached also matter and on professional products they make sure the wind is properly blocked while allowing the sound to pass thru with minimal reduction. Fake materials use in DIY or discount options can also be very noisy. Synthetic materials, for example, could be made from recycled plastic and make terrible scratchy sounds just from simple moves not in the wind. There's a reason why professional products are more expensive.

“Professional products” are made 99% of the time in China in the same factories and with the same cheap material as the “discount options”. But with good branding and marketing they charge you 5 times the price :)

Deity Microphones anything/everything. What typically all is involved in post? syncing large numbers of audio clips with video efficiently, EQ, compression, etc, mixing & mastering. Maybe a video on “What you need to know about audio post production” and then more videos of more in-depth breakdowns?

If you check out the video we referenced from @SoundSpeeds he does all of that already. He does some extensive testing and really shows the limits of each product. This is more of a guide to educate about what options are on the market.

I've been trying to reach Deity since a week. I bought the D mic V-3 Pro and need a windscreen, which is very difficult to find. It would be nice/professional to at least provide me with an answer.

Great info! I notice that the grill on the mic is slightly covered by the clip on the blimp mount at 5:50. Does this affect the mic at all?
@DeityMicrophones
@DeityMicrophones 4 жыл бұрын
Probably not. Most people dont realize under thos grills is a second set of events that actually do the work. And you block certain outside grills and not actually be blocking any of the internal vents.

Remote Audio has what’s called a Rainman. You put it over your blimp and it helps absorb the rain.
